Chris Christie is now firing back against the Corzine campaign on the issue of his own weight, saying Corzine is trying to use Christie's weight problem as a distraction from the real issues of the campaign.

This all started with a Corzine campaign ad that said Christie "threw his weight around" as U.S. Attorney to get out of trouble from traffic violations and car accidents. Later on, when Corzine was asked if he thinks Christie is fat, he answered, "Am I bald?" The most recent, and most blatant instance, came from state Democratic chairman Joe Cryan, who declared to a Democratic crowd: "What would it feel like if the next governor weighs 350 pounds?"

So now Christie has fired back, as the Press of Atlantic City reports:

"I'm gonna let you in on a little secret," Christie told the crowd. "I know most of you didn't know this - but the governor's been whispering this to the press for months and months and months, and now he's trying to be a little cute about talking about it too through his TV ads. I want to make sure you're all seated and you're OK before I let you in on a secret: I'm overweight. And I've struggled with my weight for the better part of 30 years, up and down.
"And the governor somehow thinks that in a time when we have 9.8 percent unemployment, at a time when we have the highest tax burden in America, at a time when we have the highest property taxes in the United States, that that's what you wanna talk about."

Actually, this approach (I have been struggling to control my weight for 30 years......") could backfire on him.

He leaves himself open to the rebuttal, "If you cannot control your OWN well-being, why should we entrust you with the power to oversee an entire state economy?"

Do people really think fat people have no control? I would think yes.

Looks like Corzine won this point, no matter how tasteless it was. He's got Christie, and the whole state, talking about how fat Christie is. So now he's painted Christie as a fat hypocrite with no ideas. I think Corzine's going to pull this one out.

The best part is that the Christie campaign started this one with their total inability to keep up with common figures of speech (remind you of someone?). If Christie's campaign people weren't so moronic, then Corzine probably wouldn't have gone this route.

I don't think it's a "little" secret. It's a big, fat secret.

Looks like someone wants the voters to turn their heads away from shady taxpayer paid business trips.

Only, sadly it's not even funny. "OldFatWhiteGuys" is a phrase you want to steer away from.

I'm very much to the left but this pisses me off beyond words. Corzine is a bigot, plain and simple. Being fat doesn't mean you "have no control". It means you have no control over one thing: your weight.

Are fat people somehow less capable of, say, running corporations than skinny people? Obviously not. The "no control" argument is simple bigotry.

And in case you haven't noticed, there seem to be a lot of politicians who are quite slender who appear to have control issues that are for more damaging to their constituents and careers than a simple weight problem. I'm thinking Mark Sanford, Larry Craig, Mark Foley, etc. etc. And word is that inveterate jogger George W. Bush had a penchant for human flesh. Just sayin.

I was thinking more along the lines of "I'm addicted to stuffing myself."

He's got a point there. Corzine's campaign made a big mistake talking about his weight.
This guy is not Rush Limbaugh with a life of abuse of all description.
Besides, overweight people are also voters. And I don't think they appriciate.

I don't follow NJ politics, so I don't know if Corzine is a good guy or not. I do know that using weight like this is offensive. I expected better from the party that embraces tolerance. Does our "big tent" now have a sign on it that says "fat people not welcome?" If so, when will we start excluding ugly, as well?
