The Creigh Deeds campaign is now raising money off of the attack by McDonnell supporter Sheila Johnson, who made fun of Deeds for stuttering.
"Before introducing Bob at a campaign event, a top McDonnell surrogate resorted to mocking Creigh's speaking style -- insulting people who truly suffer from speech impediments," the e-mail from Deeds senior adviser Mo Elleithee says.
"Creigh is the first to tell you he's not the smoothest talker. But when he says something, you know it's honest," Elleithee later adds. "Bob McDonnell has not been honest in this campaign. Not about his transportation and energy plans, and certainly not about his record."
The McDonnell campaign initially did not apologize, but released a statement saying that Deeds "never had a problem voicing his false attacks," but "had difficulty expressing" a positive vision. After some more media coverage, Johnson apologized.
The full e-mail is available after the jump.
Dear Friend,
Bob McDonnell's campaign has reached a new low.
Before introducing Bob at a campaign event, a top McDonnell surrogate resorted to mocking Creigh's speaking style -- insulting people who truly suffer from speech impediments.
George Mason University Professor Mark Rozell said the attack was "way out of line." Chris Matthews exclaimed, "Stop the personal stuff, NOW!" And NBC's David Shuster said, "I hope Bob McDonnell, for his sake, will distance himself from her and say that has no place in his campaign. I mean, that was just disgusting."
But far from apologizing, the McDonnell campaign said the resulting outrage over the incident was "beyond us."
Losing on the substance, they're using personal attacks.

Creigh is the first to tell you he's not the smoothest talker. But when he says something, you know it's honest.
Bob McDonnell has not been honest in this campaign. Not about his transportation and energy plans, and certainly not about his record.
Even worse, he's proven incapable of acknowledging mistakes.
This is a man who, at the age of 34, wrote a thesis arguing that "working women" are "detrimental to the family." And when a reporter asked him about it, Bob stared him right in the face and said, "I'm not apologizing."
It's time for an honest assessment of these candidates -- one that's based on the issues and who has the character to be governor, not petty personal attacks.
But in order to make that happen, we need your help to get our message out. Right now, McDonnell is outspending us 2-1 on TV ads.
Help us fight back against these recent attacks by making a contribution today.
There are just 27 days left. It's more important than ever that Virginians know the facts and can make an honest, informed decision on Election Day.
Sincerely,
Mo Elleithee

Deeds comes off as so weak, "send me money because my opponent's supporter made fun of me". Once again, Deeds seems to stand for nothing other than "McDonnell is an ass".

I disagree. There is nothing wrong with capitalizing on every miss-step your opponent makes. Keep in mind that republican chickenhawks got elected using their supposed patriotism and bravery, campaigning against decorated veterans (Chambliss (GA), and Bush v Kerry).
McDonnell is a weasel and I don't want him to be my governor. Deeds is 10 times better, and he can use whatever works as long as it is true.

I'm with you; I don't want McDonnell as a governor, either. I'm not wild about Deeds, but he's a much better choice than McDonnell. Jim Gilmore and George Allen between them almost wrecked the place; I'm not at all anxious to put another Republican in the Governor's Mansion for quite a while.

A. McDonnell is an ass.
B. To say that it is "weak" to point out that McDonnell's surrogate made fun of someone's speech impediment (which many people have) is to truly trivialize a blatant, disgusting personal attack.

Deeds doesn't seem to believe he stutters, but rather calls it a "speaking style". Now if he does have a speech impediment then I'd agree, but I think Deeds is just a poor public speaker, and the the McDonnell supporter was critiquing his inability to communicate clearly and concisely and mimicked his "speaking style".
Senior advisor Mo Elleithee seems to go out of his way to simply anwser the question "Does Creigh Deeds have a stutter?" It's a simple yes or no and the fact that he dances around it tells me that Deeds doesn't stutter but they like the negative publicity this brings McDonnell. And that clarifying that he doesn't have a stutter would in fact let Shelia Johnson off the hook because she was mocking his "speaking style" since he doesn't have a stutter.

You are fighting a really pathetically losing argument here. You say that Deeds is weak because he objects to having McDonnell's people making fun of stuttering. Then you get into a ridiculous "argument" about whether he really stutters, or if he just repeats a few syllables now and then.
Who cares if Deeds meets the legal definition of stuttering? Making fun of a person (remember Macaca?) can land you in deep doo doo. Is there a reason you are making a big deal out of this? Do you think McDonnell is right? Since it is hard to itemize his many anti-women, and anti-21st Century stances on issues without his lame excuses about being young (34) or just turning in a paper (he has advocated for these same positions in his time in government), why not bring up examples of his disdain for people who he considers "other?"
Are you defending McDonnell? If so, what is good about him? Just saying that he only cares about TRUE stutterers doesn't get it for me.
