Senate Democratic leaders have arrived at the White House for what administration officials are calling a "check-in."
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Sens. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Patty Murray (D-WA) will be meeting with President Obama and (probably) top health care adviser Nancy-Ann DeParle and chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, who have been on Capitol Hill all week helping negotiate the merger of the two versions of the Senate health care plan.
A source tells TPMDC there isn't a laser focus on all of the public option news breaking over on the Hill (Brian's latest is here) but rather a talk about everything being floated as a potential compromise.
"I think there are a lot of moving parts here and don't think anything is close to being settled," the source said.
Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) had a private lunch with Obama today and aides on both sides are mum on what they discussed.
TPMDC is camped out here at the White House to get a sense of how the talks are going, and we'll keep you posted.

Lord, I can't wait for this to be over. I mean, not only do I really want HCR to pass, but there is so much more work to be done. Just last night my son brought home his Time for Kids magazine and read to me that the Child Nutrition Act is set to expire next month. I realize school lunches are not the most important thing in the world but it's just one small example of the hundredss of pieces of business that this Congress needs to get addressed. And apparently, we can only do one thing at a time around here.

Me too Tara but this is a huge huge thing. This is one of the most major pieces of legislation since medicare and social security. Congress hasn't had to work this hard in years

This is off message but I don't know where to post it, but I just received an email from Paul Rieckoff of IAVA saying that President just signed a VA bill guaranteed advanced health care funding for our Veterans. This is huge and they Vets are delighted and so am I.
Anyone who faults this president IMO for the job he is doing in such a short time is just a whiner.

They get a single-payer system. Someone should ask those opposed to single-payer why, if it's so bad, is it good enough for veterans?

And somewhat related to that, I just came across this story. Kind of puts a human face on all this.
