As you may have heard, progressive groups are petitioning Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to throw down the gauntlet and get conservative Democrats on board against Republican filibusters. The idea: "Any Democratic senators who support a Republican attempt to block a vote on health care reform should be stripped of their leadership titles. Americans deserve a clean up-or-down vote on health care."

A letter from the Progressive Change Campaign Committee to supporters announces, "We'll deliver the petition signatures to Harry Reid next week after a big news conference in front of the Senate."

So what does leadership think of this? Not too much, apparently. "These kinds of gestures are counter-productive and won't have any impact on Capitol Hill," says a leadership aide. "These kinds of efforts will fall flat."

Additionally, the aide added, even if Democrats were responsive to the pressure, it's improperly placed. "There's a fundamental miscalculation here, in that ultimately this is not a decision for Senator Reid to make. This is a decision that's going to be made by the caucus as a whole."

I doubt whether that will assuage progressives, but generally speaking the notion that party defectors should be stripped of their seniority and other perks is often embraced by grassroots activists on both the left and the right. But in recent years it hasn't typically resulted in any action on the Hill.

The biggest whiner is Ben Nelson. He's acting like a little baby about it, saying that he won't cooperate if people accuse him of not cooperating.

Well, you might as well threaten Nelson--and follow through on the threats--because he's all but promised he's going to vote with the Republicans on health care reform if it isn't just another great big gift to his beloved insurance companies.

He has been an unusually thin-skinned little bitch when it comes to criticism, hasn't he?

Well, I just placed a constituent call to Senator Reid asking him to not be so dismissive of his own base and to please get Sen. Durbin whipping on procedural matters. Apparently, my concerns will be brought to the attention of the Senator's staff and I should expect a response letter within the next 7-10 business days.

And he expects my vote next year!? Sorry, I would gladly toss my vote on a third party candidate than condone spineless leadership!

I normally don't think actions are productive when they assume a bunch of rules that may not be true (e.g. Reid's ability to remove committee chairs), but in this case, I think there's a good argument. The aide quoted here is being a bit disingenuous to suggest that efforts to shake up committee assignments are misdirected at Reid. I suppose the alternative would be to petition 60 democratic Senators, but that would diffuse the effort.

It's one thing just to assert wildly that Reid needs to "cajole" or "twist arms" or whatever, but it's another to suggest a specific action that he may have some influence to exert. If the caucus starts hearing an effective PR campaign directed at the Senate leadership, it may remind them that they're not secure in their positions and may want to reconsider that cloture vote.

This is not a quote from Reid. Let Reid speak for Reid

And, of course, the doughty journalists of the MSM give us anonymous Aides dismissing the Dirty F*cking Lefties as counterproductive? What the Hell has anonymous produced?

BTW Brian, two big complaints. The headline, Dem Leadership? ONE cowardly aide? Perhaps there's more you're not telling us? If not, try for some precision, please. And where did this story come from? Can we have some attribution from now on? Thank you!

The Republicans have thrown everything they can against health care reform, and the public option in particular. Yet polls show a majority of Americans still want the public option in the bill. Thus, the voters are not listening to the Republicans. But too many Democrats are not listening to the voters.

I have e-mailed my Senator to bring up removal, those Senators opposed to public option, in the Democratic Caucus. If there are 30 Progressive Senators there ought to be more than ONE Democratic Senator who would vote with them. The rest are DINOs. Theyn are taking the work, effort and money the grassroots put forth to put them where they are with majoritys and we are receiving nothing in return, The President shares some of this blame. What needs to be done in Caucus is to call out those who have been bought by the health care industry; insurers, Pharma and vendors. Next they will be bought by energy companies. Next they will be bought by defense/war contractors. They are already bought by the bankers. It seems it is usually the same Senators in each case!

As always, this progressive liberal will continue to apply fierce pressure on so-called moderate democrats until they bring themselves forward into the 21st century. I'm sick of the atmosphere that asks me to appease rabid republicans and their hideous, inhuman policies. To hell with the current Democratic Leadership. Reid and Pelosi both have been appeasement puppets to the right for far too long and I would like to see them both replaced asap.

It is disingenuous for anyone in the Democratic leadership to pretend they don't remember the history of capitulation and obsequiousness that has characterized Reid's tenure. Pointing to any particular upcoming vote or negotiation and chastising the left for not giving the standard process "a chance to work" is horseshit.

Reid never met a conservative he wouldn't cave to. Every time he pretends that isn't so, he's just rubbing our impotence in our faces. He's got to be an idiot to think he can just do that forever.
