That famous infighting of the core McCain campaign versus Sarah Palin is still continuing, with former McCain campaign manager Steve Schmidt openly saying at the Atlantic's "First Draft of History" symposium that it would be "catastrophic" if Palin were to win the Republican nomination in 2012.
Schmidt said: "I think that she has talents, but you know, my honest view is that she would not be a winning candidate for the Republican Party in 2012, and in fact, were she to be the nominee, we could have a catastrophic election result."
It's sure been a long journey for Schmidt, as far as his attitudes on Palin are concerned. The Los Angeles Times reported in October 2008 that Schmidt himself pushed McCain into picking her. After Karl Rove said the pick was a campaign decision, and not a governing decision, Schmidt fired back: "Karl's wrong. She's an exceptional governor, a reform governor in Alaska."
But with the campaign long over -- and Palin's performance regarded as disastrous by everyone except her core fan-base -- Schmidt is sure singing a different tune.
Late Update: The transcription of Schmidt has been corrected slightly, based on the video.

I don't think any GOP Presidential candidate would put her on the ticket. It would call into question their own judgement and sanity. She has proven herself to be functionally illiterate in all areas of government except shopping (purchasing). Only the most extreme nut wing (her also illiterate co-horts) support her.

Liz is mean and venomous, but I don't think she'd tolerate a go-it-alone imbecile like Klondike Barbie on the ticket. Or if she did, it would be one big mess I reckon.
Will Liz dare seek the Presidency on the strength of her tawdry Pappa's girl nepotism appointment to the State Department with no electoral office at all in her history? The old man would think it a brilliant idea, of course. She just might, I figure.

It's hard to imagine her surviving the scrutiny -- and the dozen or so debates -- of a primary campaign. Even if she parachutes in right before Iowa or New Hampshire, she would still face a much longer slog than in last year's campaign. And as someone running for the top of the ticket, she couldn't be placed in the same kind of protective bubble as last year.

Palin goes rogue, sucks up all the money from the far right, pulls in the 20% that thinks Rush Limbaugh really has talent on loan from God, and forces the actual Republican candidate to swing so far right that Obama pulls 65%, along with getting 65 Democratic senators elected.
Sounds great, but of course we still couldn't get legislation worth crap out of the Senate.

Whatever gets here nominated.
I'm actually living in mortal fear of how to approach the Palin situation... I don't want to frighten her or the morning zoo becksian brigade off from an attempted run (and please... please.. please... nomination!).
I actually would like some advice from the right.
What can I, as someone that thinks Palin is barely competent to be President of the family treehouse, do to increase the chances she'll both run AND win the 2012 GOP nomination?
I'm serious... does it help if I continue the Caribou Barbie taunts, or hurt? Should I amp up the 'love' - or tone it down?
I dearly, dearly want to Obama become the first since Washington to win a clean EC sweep, and a Palin/anyone 2012 ticket is the only way that happens... so please - enlighten me.
How can I help Caribou Barbie win the GOP nomination in 2012?

I'm not sure if you were being sincere or sarcastic, but I will freely admit that, as a lifelong Progressive, I am legitimately concerned that she would defeat Obama's re-election bid. She's telegenic, a spirited campaigner, and a great draw as a public speaker. I would much rather see someone with significantly less charisma like a Pawlenty or a Jindal win the GOP nomination. Palin is a natural and she definitely makes me nervous as a candidate. I sure hope the GOP does something stupid and nominates someone other than Palin.
(And yes, if you're wondering, I was born in that briar patch. That one right over there. The one you were talking about throwing me into... Yup. Born and raised!)

This is a parody, right? It sounds just like the SarahFans at Politico. There's never anything to back up why she's qualified for any executive office, just the generality of proclaiming her authenticity. As one SarahFan I know says "She's a small-town girl who would stick it to those fat cats in Washington." Just what we need. Another demagogue who's goal is to stick it to the perceived opposition. Come to think of it, she DOES personify what the GOP has become.
Just so you know- libs are not afraid of Sarah Palin. We just have a hard time believing anyone could take such a shallow person with so few achievements seriously enough to think she's qualified on any way to be president. And quitting the Governor job doesn't look good on a resume either.

ARe you kidding? We'd LOVE for Sara to be a nominee. She won't be, of course, but It would be great.
She won't be because she's just a stalking horse now. She allows the GOP to appear relevant, even though the only people who like what that party has become is a jingoistic, nativist core of Know-nothings who, with the exception of Palin, perhaps, seem to either talk with a Southern accent.
Not that there's anything wrong with the South or a Southern accent... But the attitudes she expresses do seem to have a regional flavor.
She'll hang around and make a few bucks, and then she'll fade in time for the real nominee candidates to step up.

The R's have two choices for 2012. Either someone will take control early on and ramrod a single individual to the nomination similar to what happened with Bush in 2000, or they are going to have a repeat of the stalemate between the religious right and the professional politicians in the party that led to McCain/Palin.
Palin herself is not competent to set up the political machine required to get the nomination on her own. Someone who is competent (a Karl Rove type) might use her image the way Rove did with Bush 43, but there has to be easier celebrities to do that with.
No one capable of actually getting the nomination on their own would accept Palin on the ticket. The Christian right would do a lot better with Huckabee. Huckabee knows it and will sabotage any effort by Palin that appears likely to be successful, and Palin is a political babe-in-the-woods compared to Huckabee.
But Palin is going to keep the talk going as long as possible because it makes a lot of money and keeps her where she wants to be - in the limelight as a celebrity famous for being famous. That's all she has ever wanted. Real work is not on her agenda.
Palin's not the circus for 2012, but she'll be a perpetual sideshow act on the midway.

Don't wish for a Palin nomination on the assumption she will lose easily. Maybe, but politics is too unpredtcatbe and any nominee of a major party has at least a chance of winding up in the White House. Palin as president would be such a disaster for the country that she shouldn't be allowed to get anywhere even remotely near it.

The mere fact that Schmidt is right doesn't make his perpetual attempts to foist the blame for his laughably incompetent management of McCain's campaign onto others any more attractive. The guy faced an incredibly difficult environment, but he seemed to think that making one bad decision after another was the same thing as "shaking things up." Ditching the ground game that Rove meticulously built over eight years so he could fund a few more final national TV commercials mostly wasted on states McCain couldn't win? Ditching the cloyingly close and protective relationship McCain spent 30 years building with the press? Sarah Palin (yes, his decision). And it's like he'd never even heard of the electoral college. The guy made Mark Penn look like the genius Mark Penn thought he was. He ran the least competent presidential campaign since Bush I in 1992, and he can't scapegoat his way out unemployment by blaming it all on Palin.

To be fair he had an incredibly incompetent candidate in McCain too. In his first big foreign policy speech back in March which was widely ignored while the press fixated on Obama/Clinton McCain said we should boot the Russians out of the G-20. The G-20 operates on consensus, they only issue unanimous communiques. The Russians would have had to vote themselves out of the G-20 and Putin would have laughed in President McCain's face if he ever had the chance to propose it.
Then he ll but proposed starting a shooting war with Russia over their incursion into Georgia.
Let's not forget suspending his campaign, stiffing Letterman to go do Palin damage control with Katie Couric and trying to dodge one of the debates with Barack all in one weekend in an effort to look presidential and decisive. Then he scurried back to DC only to sit befuddled and silent while Obama looked engaged and responsible as Paulson and Bernanke laid out the financial disaster that had befallen the world thanks to Republican policies and their Keynesian plan to drag us back from the brink.
Little mentioned is the article published under McCain's name almost exactly a year ago where he stated he wanted to do for the health care industry what Republicans did for Wall St.: deregulate it to make it more efficient, profitable and cheaper.
You try selling a shitty candidate like that to the public or volunteers. Schmidt may have been a lousy campaign manager but birds of a feather flock together. If the Repubs had anyone better than him in the bullpen none of them were willing to take the mound last summer. And who could blame them?

Ok, lets put it to bed. Democrats should be hoping and praying that Palin not only runs but wins the nomination in 2012. She WILL lose easily in a general. Proud ignorance and thinly veiled racism might rile up the GOP base, but it turns off everyone else. And it energizes everyone else to vote against her. So will Schmidt now admit when it came time to make the biggest decision of the Presidential campaign, that his candidate made a HUGE mistake by following his advice?
Schmidt can say whatever he wants about Palin now. But the true "catastrophe" would have been if McCain had been elected President. Even if he lived to serve out his term, and Palin was never anything more than a do-nothing VP, his penchant for making rash, impulsive, and just plan bad decisions would have led to a Presidency even more catastrophic than Bush's.
Those of us on the left who are less than 100% happy with Obama's Presidency so far would do well to remind ourselves of what the alternative would have been from time to time. And Schmidt should take as honest a look at himself as he now does at Palin. What does it says about his own judgment that he pulled this know-nothing idiot out of no where and thrust her into our national politics? If he did, he would no doubt have to find a new line of work...hopefully one where the decisions you make do not have such a large impact on the lives of others.

It's funny, but the GOP has put itself in this box. I mean, it cherishes Sarah because of her connections to rural America. To many rural Americans, she comes across as authentic and competent. Say whatever you want, but Alaskans like Palin.
The trouble for the GOP, of course, is that the country is not a rural country anymore. I have rural friends who have moved to my large midwestern city. They cannot stand Palin. The job requires so much more than what she can bring. But, to the base, Palin is a dream -- because the base is rural America.

If it does happen, Mr. Schmidt, you will have been complicit in making the "catastrophic" possible. At minimum, you allowed the McCain campaign to jump the shark, and to take our politics with it.

The comments about this at Politico would go something like this:
"Sarah's the real deal. You libs are afraid of her. Go Sarah 2012! Obama is dumb and so is his wife. He has no experience running anything. He wasn't born in the USA. Sarah is brilliant. She'll show you libs who's boss." etc, ad nauseam
The crazee. It burns!

Agreed to both. Palin/Bachmann would be hysterical and one of the greatest threats to the Republic since the Civil War. What we need is reasonable Republicans to pick up the banner, so we can have a serious conversation about the future of this nation.
I was going to try to name such a reasonable Republican, but I can't think of one right now.

That's because any reasonable Republican has been purged from the party for opposing the young queen last fall.

Two thoughts:
1. She's an idiot. But she's honest about it. He's an idiot for pushing her on the ticket. And a whining liar for dumping on her. He failed to do his job. He failed McCain. He failed this country. He chose this woman - this dangerous hateful arrogant moron - because of some lame political calculus (that was wrong, BTW). He insulted women, he insulted thoughtful conservatives, and he betrayed his duty. Choosing her unleashed all the hate and violence that has polluted this country for the last year.
2. She is the best the GOP base has to offer. I hope she runs. I hope she gets nominated. Then, after Obama crushes her, the GOP base will be an isolated demoralized whatever, and fade away. Then we can move on to getting more stuff done, intelligently.
I'm out of adjectives.

As a woman I would find a Palin nomination--complete with debates against Obama--too humiliating for words. It would set the cause of equal rights back more than anything else I can think of.
I would like to see a woman nominated for president by one of the major parties before I die. But let it be someone who doesn't embarrass me, my sex and my nation.

Most of us agree that the choice of Palin for VP was wrong. So here is Schmidt, willing to admit that he was wrong...which is better than any other GOP pundit, hired gun or whatever. The really ironic part is that now Limbaugh is calling Schmidt names because he is speaking the truth, based on an assessment of his time spent with her, which is more than any other Repug.
We should not overlook the forest for the trees here, Schmidt admits a mistake, exposes her inabilities and the GOP talking heads HAVE TO step up and support her, which exposes them and their lack of judgement.
Sure, she may look good on TV and be all folksy, but her charge against President Obama was in his lack of experience...and now she has a second resignation on her resume, how can she claim any accomplishment? She like all other GOPers have nothing but NO as their governing policy, are voters really that stupid?

Oh man, Palin in 2012...I think so much has come out by now that she wouldn't stand a chance. Besides that she keeps shooting herself in the foot. As for Steve Schmidt - which ever way the wind's blowin?

Here's the problem: There is a constituency for Palin's brand of festering resentment and no-nothingism, and it's growing. When the Nazis came to power in Germany, their power base was people who had lost their class status due to depression and the hyper-inflation of Weimar that wiped out savings, property values, etc.. When people are involuntarily downwardly-mobile, they flip out and lash out, in ways the Palins of the world know how to exploit.
Add to that large-industry people who want nothing more than to put zero-regulation back into the White House, plus the usual assortment of wingnuts, and you get a very dangerous combination. At the very least, it would push the political dialogue in the country farther to the right, and it's already way farther in that direction than it ought to be.
Don't assume she'd lose. A lot of people assumed that about W, and we got him twice (with help from two inept opponents, Ralph Nader, the Supreme Court and of course the theft in Ohio). And he did incalculable damage to the country. So would Palin, and it's not a slam-dunk that she'd lose. Not even close.
Peace,
Paul

In all earnestness, please, PLEASE nominate her! She’s another Goldwater, another McGovern, and that’s why the Democratic party wants her even more than the GOP does.
