White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs did the early morning duty today to let President Obama he'd won the Nobel Peace Prize.
A senior administration official tells TPMDC Gibbs called the White House just before 6 a.m. and woke Obama to share the news.
"The president was humbled to be selected by the committee," the official says.
There will be more coming out of the White House reacting to the news today.
Worth noting, Gibbs also had pre-dawn wake-up call duties during Obama's first trip abroad, telling Obama that North Korea had fired a test missile.

And in the ranks of the right wing there was much rending of clothing, gnashing of teeth, and great wailing in the looming darkness...

I can't wait to hear his speech accepting the Peace Prize. And I had just stopped crying with joy at what's he's done during his campaign and early presidency. I'm getting my handkerchiefs ready.

Well - who knew when there was all that talk of 'early morning phone calls' during the primaries.......

Per Alfred Nobel, the prize is awarded "to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between the nations and the abolition or reduction of standing armies and the formation and spreading of peace congresses". So he get lukewarm check-marks for fraternity, and peace congresses. Wingnuts seething ...

I'm curious to see how Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, etc. will spin this one.
Rush concluded that Chicago not getting Olympics -> "World rejects Obama".

Huh? My understanding is that Nobel prizes are for achievement, not promise. BHO has identified important goals and if over the course of his administration progress was made and some success achieved, the granting of a Nobel Peace Prize would be laudatory.
Receiving the Nobel is not Obama's fault, and it says much more about the intellectual bankruptcy of the Nobel committee that it does about Obama. Odd development.

Maybe the achievement is what Josh is talking about on the front, that Obama has, in the world's eyes, turned the U.S. back into the largest agent of good and not a massive, unpredictable, destabilizing force. This is time to take a step back and see us as the world sees us. My hope is that Obama continues to live up to the award and accomplishes even more. Yeah, maybe it is too soon, but it shows that he and we are on the right track.

A well-deserved recognition for a man who may well become a legend in our time. He's still got my support. He is living proof that brains trumps bullshit, given the opportunity. Eat you heart out, "W" !!!

I think this is a bit early. At least after passing Climate Change. Nonetheless this is great news. Of course we have shills like Davi Gregory calling it the "I'm not George Bush" award. I am telling you he is 6 7 but if I hawk a loogie at him it will reach.
