New Yorkers are ready to let Rudy Giuliani throw the bums out, according to a new poll from Siena University. The former New York City mayor leads the current Democratic incumbents in a potential governors race or U.S. Senate bid according to the survey of 624 registered voters, which was Oct. 14-18. Giuliani has not declared his intentions to run for either race, but observers expect him to mount a gubernatorial bid.

Giuliani beats Gov. David Paterson 56-33 in potential 2010 matchup. Paterson has been suffering under very low approval ratings for months and national Democrats have made it clear they hope he won't run. The new poll again justifies their pressure on Paterson, as Democrats beat Giuliani with popular state Attorney General Andrew Cuomo as their nominee. Like Giuliani, Cuomo has not declared his intentions in the race.

In a potential Senate matchup, Guiliani also defeats the woman Paterson chose to replace Hillary Clinton in the Senate, Kristen Gillibrand. He leads that race 53-36. Former Gov. George Pataki (R), whose name has been floated as potential nominee, also defeats Gillibrand, 46-41.

Even though the poll suggests they'd vote for him if he ran, a sizeable number of voters, 43%, said they don't want Giuliani to run for either job.

Can somebody, anybody, remind me why they were so up in arms about Obama telling Paterson that he wanted him to step aside? If he can't beat Rudy 9/11, and is polling THIS poorly as an incumbent, he shouldn't even make it out of a primary. He shouldn't even be in a primary.

I didn't get the outrage myself. Maybe it was a New York pride thing or the ones that were outraged were big Paterson supporters. In any case, I don't want Rudy running NY ever again.

I truly hope that new yorkers aren't this stupid. This guy is a buffoon. Any new yorker should be disgusted by this guy making millions off of the deaths of over 2,000 new yorkers and trying to ride their deaths to the presidency.

Disgusting. This fool is really disgusting.

Incidentally his "tough on crime" bullshit is just what it is bullshit. He just followed through on the plans and policies implemented by his predecessor, a democrat.

I don't buy these poll numbers. The inconsistency is telling - 43 don't wany Rudy to run for anything, but he has a large lead over Gillibrand? New Yorkers disdain for Rudy cannot be overstated. Okay, I'll accept that he could beat Patterson. Anyone could beat Patterson, but Cuomo is going to be the candidate and Rudy is not going to risk exposing his sleazy consulting business activities by running. Gillibrand is making all the right moves to bring the party together behind her. She will have Obama and the Clintons on her side and she will not have to face either Rudy or Pataki. By the way, even my Republican friends in New York hate Pataki. He and Rudy can fantasize about this because of their high name recognition, but it just ain 't going to happen.

Not to mention that if Guiliani runs, democrats will have plenty of new material to attack him: this Kerik story, his attacks against the "East Coast" at the RNC, his far-right rhetorics etc. The New Yorkers who only remember him for 9/11 (9/11 9/11...) could be surprised by what he has been up to since then.

They got pretty mad at him when he backed Caroline Kennedy for Gillbrand's seat, too. Though damned if I know what their beef with Gillibrand is. I haven't followed here closely, but she seems to be voting pretty much exactly the way Hillary would have.

Hey Josh. I just jumped back to the home page and was immediately struck by the Bernie Kerik headline. Holy irony! Did you guys plan that, or is Rudy just snakebit? Nothing like old friends...

Gillibrand's fine. She's an opportunistic pol from an upstate dynasty, but as long as she votes like a good liberal, she's okay by me. Problem is low name recognition, and the fact that between Spitzer and Espada, the Democratic brand has fallen into disrepute in New York. Still, where are people going to go, once they're reminded of Giuliani's storied sleaziness? He beats Paterson but not Gillibrand, that's my bet. Paterson looks weak and is wearing the economic albatross. Gillibrand is just a blank slate.

I was skeptical about Gillibrand at first, but she has been fantastic on the issues. She is voting and acting like one of the more progressive members of the Senate.

The Gillibrand number is actually fine. Low statewide name recognition relaive to Rudy. Rudy's negative of 43% is extremely high, and not likely to get better. He did worse the longer he was in the GOP Primaries, and that will be the case here as well. We also know that Obama, HRC and Schumer will be out in force next year to help protect the seat.

The Paterson number is reflective of Paterson. Frankly, we should hope Rudy jumps in. It will make it more likely that a heavyweight will jump in on the Dem side to take on Rudy.
