The Republican Governors Association has a new ad in the Virginia Governor's race, presenting Democratic candidate Creigh Deeds as being disrespectful to women.
The ad is an apparent comeback to Dem attacks against Republican candidate Bob McDonnell's hard-right grad school thesis, which disparaged working women and opposed government policies that would help them.
In the ad, Deeds is shown being questioned by a female reporter, to which he responds: "I think I made myself clear, young lady." The female narrator then cuts in: "Did you catch that? 'Young lady.'"
Late Update: I asked Deeds senior adviser Mo Elleithee for comment on a campaign conference call. "I mean, Creigh has known the reporter in question for a long time, and has a tremendous amount of respect for her, and recognized that he probably should not have spoken to her in that way, and called her and apologized after the fact," said Elleithee. "But if you want to talk about respect for women, we'll put Creigh's record up against Bob McDonnell's, any day of the week."

I guess Republicans are mad that he didn't call her a feminazi and tell her she should be at home.

Wow, that is quite a desperate move...by McDonnell. That was a valid point made by Deeds in the complete video (not the Republican outtake)...she clearly was not paying close attention to what Deeds had said several times.
Deeds wins this point by the simple fact that McDonnell felt he had to put out an ad...that fails.

First, they're saving old people from the Democrats evil plan to gut Medicare (which Republicans invented, you know), and now they're protecting women from, um, something or other.

The projection is epidemic, isn't it? Or perhaps "endemic" is a better description. The candidate who apparently thinks women belong in the home now wants Virginia voters to think that it's actually the other guy who doesn't respect women?
If a Republican is accusing his opponent of something, you can pretty much make book that the something in question is something the Republican is currently doing, has done in the past, or will plan to do in the future.
Democrats want to kill Medicare? Translation in reality speak: Republican want to kill Medicare. And etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.

He called her young and he called her a lady. I doubt many women would have a problem with that. Especially in Virginia, where being polite to a woman is still not generally considered to be an insult.

Looked like she was younger than he; maybe the 'lady' part is a bit old fashioned, but it is the South, after all.

I've been called many things worse than "Young Lady." I fail to see the implied disrespect here. He may have been a bit snarky, but that's pink polka-dot capital block letters NOTHING compared to what the author of the ad said about women.
