Republicans are calling on President Obama to take a stand on Rep. Alan Grayson's (D-FL) controversial remarks about a female lobbyist. During his visit to Florida yesterday, Obama praised Grayson, calling the freshman representative "outstanding" in a speech praising other members of the state's Democratic congressional delegation.
"President Obama should immediately rescind his accolades and condemn Grayson's shameful comments, and Congressman Grayson should issue an apology," said RNC co-chair Jan Larimer.
Eric's been reporting all day on FL Rep. Alan Grayson's (D) controversial comments the recent radio interview. Grayson, the new darling of progressives thanks to his tough talk about the GOP, called the female lobbyist a "K Street whore" on the air. He was immediately attacked by state and national Republicans, and has since said he was referring to lobbyists professional life, not her character.

Yeah, but I like the moral High-Ground.
"Whore" was a bit strong(albeit quite accurate) considering it was a woman.

You can't have it both ways. If "whore" using the term to mean someone who sells their services is accurate in regard to this lobbyist, then it doesn't matter if you are referring to a man or woman. Even if the term were meant for sex, there are man whores as well. Saying that it is only too strong (but accurate) because the "whore" is a woman, is actually offensive to women. Would you prefer the term, lobbyist, shilling pig?

To clarify, when I said is was a bit strong I meant that it was counter-productive considerering her gender and how "whore" is primarily used as a deragotory term for women, not by myself but clearly by many. People get stuck on a woman being called a whore because in most cases they are speaking about sexual acts for money by a woman, and yes while men can be too, the the normal intention of the word is directed at women.
Had Grayson been speaking about a man, most would have jumped right to the Corporate-shill type definition. (sure, it is a double-standard, but not one set up by anyone even alive today).

Grayson's biggest crime is to oppose Wall Street hacks and DC "civility" (calling a corporate whore a whore is an horrible crime, unlike lying a country into war).
Ask Eliot Spitzer: Grayson now probably has a team of feds building a "case" against him.

This "will he apologize/condemn/disown?" BS is getting out of hand...on both sides. (I thought the House motion to slap Joe Wilson on the wrist was stupid...the guy did enough to make himself stupid and it should have been left at that.) Is this a recent phenomenom? If yes, why? (Will the GOP and pundits say Obama invited this silliness because he said he was going to "change the tone" in DC?) And just why in the hell is Obama responsible for apologizing for/condemning every Dem in the country, especially black Dems? (or just blacks in general)

I don't think Obama should retract his praise or do anything about this.
However, I'm curious about the GOP outrage and Grayson's reasoning. Would the GOP had been outraged had the lobbyist in question were male?
And Grayson's explanation is strange, too. He's referring to her professional life, not character, and therefore, that's ok? Lobbyists = whores?
As an amateur lobbyist at my state government, I think Grayson's hyperbole should get him in trouble. I know I'm going to get a raft of crap for echoing Hillary Clinton, but lobbyists do some good. Painting all of them as whores is kind of obnoxious. But then, I find Grayson (while entertaining) kind of obnoxious as well.

Here's your first installment: lobbyists subvert democracy which is a liability that outweighs any incidental good they do. They represent superpowerful legal entities that divert the attention of our representatives with disproportionate influence and self-serving (i.e. anti-democratic) motives. Giving corporations legal rights was the first mistake. Allowing their representatives (lobbyists) to corrupt and subvert our representatives against our interests was the second, fatal mistake. If they remain unchecked, along with doing nothing about the condition of our corporately owned and controlled media, we can pretty much kiss the American experiment in democracy goodbye.

I won't dispute any of your statements.
But lobbyists can also be experts on a particular issue, and can offer that expertise to politicians who don't have the time to adequately prepare for an issue. I'd prefer politicians to be informed about what they're legislating on.
However, I realize that the current state of lobbying at the DC level is vastly different than my quaint view of it.

The problem is, they are not disinterested experts. They are paid to put the spin that their bosses want on their expertise. Congress can always ask unbiased experts for their testimony or advice. But that doesn't get them campaign contributions.

I can appreciate their expertise. However, they represent a vested interest. The information they present has a decided bias to it at the least, and is wholesale propaganda at the worst. As I said, they may provide a service. The catch is whom they really serve.

Nobody referred to "all" lobbyists as whores. Grayson referred to the CHIEF LOBBYIST for Enron, one of the most evil corporate entities ever devised by humans, as a whore.

More from the Salon bit
http://www.salon.com/politics/war_room/2009/10/27/grayson/index.html
In the Jones interview, Grayson opined that Fed advisor Linda Robertson, with whom he has had some sharp exchanges, is a “K Street whore.”
There is, theoretically, a valid way to express the idea that the Fed apparatus often appears to be in hock to the business lobby. It’s a point that’s been made in Salon, in fact, over and over. But "The Alex Jones Show" is a place to choose your words carefully (or, even better, to avoid altogether).
She actually questioned his understanding of the difference between fiscal and monetary policy. She had the audacity to attack a congressman who used to be an economist. She's a career lobbyist who used to work for Enron and advocates for whatever she gets paid to promote.
Great, so it’s not so much that Grayson is worried about the Fed’s independence -- he's more just pissed that Robertson hasn’t paid him sufficient personal deference.

Grayson should just say he's sorry and get it over with. Using "whore" when talking about a woman is inviting trouble like using monkey references when talking about blacks. If you're not trying to push a line and be able to pretend you never meant it that way, just steer clear. yes, lobbyists are referred to as "whores" all the time, and it's fine when they're men or plural without being gender specific, but don't do it with any women.
I love Grayson's frankness, but we can't criticize irresponsible GOP hyperbole while while engaging in our own.
