Virginia Republicans are highlighting Creigh Deeds' (D) remarks about a public option from last night's gubernatorial debate as another example of what the party claims is Deeds' desire to have it both ways on national issues.
At the traditional post-debate press gaggle last night Deeds was peppered with questions about the public option, which he said he would "consider opting out of" if such an option was available to states in a final health care reform bill. Asked by a reporter if he was opposed to the public option, Deeds exclaimed, "No! I never said that!"
The state GOP posted video of the moment this morning.

Deeds initial comment in the debate was bad re: public option. But he did say "consider" opting out, not that he was against it (as if there is any doubt that Bob McDonnell is against significant reform at all!). The reporter was essentially shilling for the Repubs because he certainly heard the word "consider" too. The fact that the media is trumpeting this shows you which side that media is on.

dswx, bullshit, this is entirely Deeds' fault, not the media's. Deeds is confused and incoherent, and the reporter rightly is trying to get a straight answer from him.
Deeds truly has proved a shockingly poor candidate.
I voted for him in the primary, and unless last night and this morning I still wasn't regretting my primary vote because there's no doubt McAuliffe and Moran also would be in trouble right now. McDonnell objectively is a stronger candidate than any of the Democrats who wanted the nomination. But now that it looks like Deeds might lose this thing by a double-digit margin, it's hard to argue that he's a better choice than McAuliffe who at least would have run a competent general election campaign and thereby prevented any late meltdown to make for a big blowout loss that Deeds is now risking.

Yes, yes, and yes. Especially on Deeds's incoherence. Why did we end up with such piss-poor choices in the primary, anyway?

As much as the VA/NJ Gov Races is good reading at TPM, I really wish you guys would spin off Local coverage into something along the lines of TPM Local. It buried the DC related news. Here's a look at what comes up on the TPMDC psge at the moment by category:
NY-23
VA-GOV
VA-GOV
NJ-GOV
NY-23

Health Care

AFL-CIO (Health Care)
VA-GOV

Congress
------------

FL-SEN

The "dashed lines" are where the articles on the index showing story text to having just the category and subject line.
The key article that I was coming to look for was the second one below the dashed lines:
Health Care
Pelosi Whipping House Health Care Plan--Including Robust Public Option October 21, 2009, 9:07AM
That frankly is the big story of the day: we're keeping an eye on the House Caucus meeting and the whipping.
The coverage is quite good on the local VA/NJ. But it's showing that it's time to open up another section. You guys barely are touching Maine Question 1, which warrants *more* coverage than the NJ Gov race (other than the fact that the NJ Gov race is wildly fun due to Christie's trainwreck of a campaign). But since there isn't really a good, dedicated Local section, it gets lost behind the other two stories.
I'd also say (again) that you need to add TPMLiveWire to the top header. It's not the easiest to find without being part of the menu/header.

I guess I better just brace myself for Wednesday morning Republican glee, and be prepared for Republicans describing McDonnell's victory as the most important political victory since the landslide win of Bush in 2000.
