Rep. Alan Grayson (D-FL) -- the man best known for saying that the Republican health care plan is for Americans who get to "die quickly," and for calling former Vice President Dick Cheney a vampire with blood dripping from his teeth -- may have gone a bit too far in one of his latest rhetorical excesses, calling lobbyist Linda Robertson, who used to advise Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, a "K Street whore."

The comments were made a month ago, when Grayson appeared on the radio show of right-wing talker Alex Jones, and was just discovered and circulated by the NRCC. "Here I am, the only Member of Congress who actually worked as an economist. And she's, this lobbyist, this K Street whore, is trying to teach me about economics," said Grayson.

Grayson spokesman Todd Jurkowski stood by the Congressman's comments, telling the Orlando Sentinel in an e-mail: "She attacked the Congressman and his efforts to promote a Republican bill to audit the Federal Reserve. She actually questioned his understanding of the difference between fiscal and monetary policy. This is [a] person who used to be the chief lobbyist for Enron attacking the intelligence and motives of a Congressman who used to be an economist."

The Politico reports that some of Grayson's House Democratic colleagues are creating some distance from him in light of this. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) called the comment "inappropriate and unfair" to Robertson. Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY) was more blunt: "Is this news to you that this guy's one fry short of a Happy Meal?"

NRCC spokesman Andy Seré released this statement: "Alan Grayson is a vile and vulgar man whose behavior brings shame to Central Florida on a near-daily basis. His continued insistence on belittling an accomplished woman with such an insulting remark is final confirmation - as if it was needed - that he has no business near the United States Congress or any other position of public trust."

Grayson needs to install a filter between his brain and his mouth. Candor and guts are good things to have in a Congressman. A total lack of discipline is not.

The "clue" may be that she actually is a whore.

I thought the point was to tell the truth, not just "be elected." For him to change his behavior just to get elected would be whorish indeed. Better he be a known quantity.

Looks like that poll is sitting at 84% saying he didn't go too far, and I agree. Lobbyists are parasites, nothing more. They sell every piece of morality and decency in exchange for enlarging someone's profit margin and getting a little 'trickle down' for their efforts. They perform dirty deeds for money...that sounds like a whore to me.

He needs to learn to put a sock in it sometimes, but I have little time for phony outrage over this when nobody seems to have any outrage to spare for the fact that Bernanke hired a former Enron shill to lobby against Fed transparency. I think that's a bit more important than Grayson's choice of words.

The phony outrage to Rep. Grayson's remark is in direct proportion to the remark's accuracy. Grayson is being demonized precisely because he tells the truth. In Washington that's considered a "gaffe." Telling the truth repeatedly embarrasses the rest of the political class and makes Grayson a target of their wrath -- especially the Republican's.

I've said it a thousand times, the true function of "truthers" such as Alex Jones is to fatally detract the credibility of anyone who has the misfortune to associate with them. Interviewed with a truther, debate with a truther, say something true which a truther also said ("C.I.A. funded the Taliban" "OMG that guy must be a truther") whatever - any person or idea which comes into contact with trutherism is doomed to be blacklisted from national politics.

It's not though, because it's the term everyone outside of Washington uses to describe those in Washington.

Greyson knows this. He's been using the language of normal people, which is why his popularity has shot up. All that will happen, is this will cause Greyson to go on tv and radio and explain exactly why people like Robertson are whores. And that's another win.

In 1991 PJ O Rourke wrote a book called "Parliament of Whores." Not much outrage then.

Fair or not (IOKIYAR) Grayson's gonna have to refine his firepower. Increased exposure brings increased responsibility. He can still say what he wants to say; he's just going to have to see, design, and utilize his statements as narrative incipits rather than one-off slams, re: the White House's dismantling of Fox News' cover of 'objectivity.' If he can pull it off, he has a bright future. And I gotta take issue with Weiner here - usually I love this guy's work but apparently he has a bad case of circular firing squad-itis. Mr. Weiner might instead take a moment and have a one-on-one in private with his teammate. What policy wonks like Mr. Weiner may not understand is the Democratic Party desperately needs folks like Grayson; there are a lot of folks (read: potential/independent voters) out there who connect with his approach. He just needs a little polish.

That's been my problem with the gutless Democrats. They're perfectly willing to let the Repubs piss all over their backs, but if one of them starts to piss back, they get all "holier than thou" and tell the offending upstart to apologize.

Politics is a blood sport -- always was and always will be. If the Democrats had any spine at all, they would have delivered the death blow to the GOP by now. Instead, they're pissing away their majority and not accomplishing a hell of a lot of anything.

Well put. Democrats and liberals generally aren't authoritarian. We aren't hypertribalists. It doesn't matter if we get crude or rough with our langauge, we're never going to ever truly sink to the level of "Some say [my opponent] has an illegitimate black baby" or "I'm afraid that [my opponent] doesn't see America the way you or I do..." Killing hundreds of thousands of people across the world and selling out the government to the highest bidder is fine for DC politicians, on the left and on the right, but calling a corporate prostitute a "whore" (or showing boobs on TV)? Watch them faint in horror!

Nothing is more important than reducing the role of lobbyists in Washington, so good for Grayson. Weiner should reflect on the influence of AIPAC whores instead of jumping in front of every camera he can find.

You don't get rationality by letting your child continue to spit at people in public. Sometimes, you have to smack him in the mouth to get his attention before you can begin the lecture on civil behavior.

You prefer Harry Reid and his chorus of cowards who have compromised away every advance and lost every major battle on the Hill for decades? I simply do not understand people who think that when someone spits in your face it's most effective to go tell Mommy or show everyone what a good boy you are by not reacting. No. You let them have it so they know there's not going to be anymore free attacks without consequences.

If this lobbyist had been a man, everyone would have understood what Grayson was saying. It was an unfortunate choice of words, even if they are accurate. Most lobbyists are political whores.

He needs to leave the name calling to radio talk show hosts and stick to policies. If a radio person said Cheney had blood dripping from his teeth, I'd laugh. From a member of congress, not so much.

Meh. I don't see the problem. "K-Street whore"?

We need an attack dog. Grayson seems to be filling the role. The attack dog's role is to point out, sometimes in vulgar terms, some of the "deficiencies" of the opposition. And he/she must do this without the leadership being seen to hold the leash.

This gives the leadership and the rank-and-file plausible deniability and the opportunity to tut-tut and engage in mild public hand-wringing over the attack dog's behavior, while privately handing him a scooby-snack.

I think Grayson is right on the money on the issues, and I appreciate the fact that we've finally got a Democrat who will stand and fight. But it's possible to be blunt and direct without going over the line into personal insults and political theatre that doesn't help. Grayson's behavior makes it too easy for the corporate media to marginalize him, and that is exactly what they will do, because they value civility over truth. Howard Dean is a better model, IMHO-- he doesn't mince words, and he is fearless when being interviewed.

Sigh! Of course some of you don't see a problem with what he said. This is the way you all speak on the blogs and amongst friends. Grayson, however, is a politician (who is now being targeted by the Right) and he should watch his mouth. Of course, the cowardly Democrats like Hoyer will run like the rats they are hoping that the Republican move works since honesty like Grayon's threatens them just as much as it does the Republicans because it exposes their own hypocrisy and deceit.

If you think this through = calling her 'the K street whore' provides an incorrect analysis of her function. She's actually the one brokering the 'relationship' between the customer and the buyer - the seller and the buyer: she, as lobbyist, would actually function as the pimp. The 'John' would be represented by the corporate firms she represents - they are they ones coming up with the money, yes? And so the term'whore' would then be more accurately applicable by those residing in the K Street brothel - yes?

This is an interesting article in journalese. Eric reported the public conflicting statements, then added the explanation by Grayson's spokesman followed by two attacks on Grayson, one by the right-wing leaning Politico and the other by the NRCC. There's no hint where the accurate balance might lie.

But this is from Wikipedia about Grayson:

He graduated from Bronx High School of Science and worked his way through Harvard University, graduating in three years, summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. He worked as an economist for two years, but then returned to Harvard for graduate studies. Within four years, he earned a law degree with honors from Harvard Law School, a masters in public policy from the John F. Kennedy School of Government and completed the course work and passed the general exams for a Ph.D. in government.[3][4]

After writing his master's thesis on gerontology, Grayson founded the Alliance for Aging Research, and served as an officer of the organization for more than 20 years.[1]

Grayson very probably knows what he is talking about. Linda Robinson was apparently a media flack ("whore") for Enron. That's a major strike against her. I'll take Grayson over Robertson and the right-wing press any day. Grayson seems to have it all together, and if there is a right-winger in America today who that can be said of, he or she damned sure isn't putting his head above ground in the current climate of right-wing idiocy.

Is it any surprise that the people who have been losing every important battle for the last 40 years on Capitol Hill are uncomfortable with a guy who showed up to the fight with every intention of winning? Nothing he said was inappropriate particularly when you find out this woman was Enron's lobbyist. Every single lobbyist for business in Washington is a whore. Grayson's direct, and honest comments make most Hill Democrats uncomfortable because they still want to play footsie with the wealthy and powerful whereas Grayson has no such intention.

Bottom line, she insulted his intelligence and he responded by calling her a whore. It sounds childish and petty to use that kind of language as an insult, particularly to a woman. There's just no getting around it.

You can call a man and a woman a corporate whore, but the sexual meaning of the word has a different impact when used against a woman than it does against a man. Bad choice of words this time.

It seems to me the rise of the Reich was brought about by the GOP posturing, to a great degree. People went with them because they appeared the stronger party. It has been shown that the drama of an interaction can be more effective in infuencing people then what is actually said. Can anyone explain how it is that so many people were unable to see what their best interests were and reelected Bush? I mean, he won the popularity contest in 2000, being the one with whom people wanted to share some beers, and in 2004, the tough guy. {Note: I'm not saying he actually won, but that it was close enough to steal.} So, I'm okay with Grayson posturing and primping for the folks who cannot see their own best interests through the smoke and mirrors. He identified her very plainly. He might have used a different word, but woud we be talking about her if we did? People really get it now. She did "tricks" for Enron. He spoke their language.

I think his remarks are in the area of right church wrong pew. The lobbyists function more as pimps or enablers with the whores being members of Congress (as in P.J. O'Rourke's book)Also probably applicable to this exchange is the Ambrose Bierce Devil's Dictionary definition of honest politician being a politician who has been bought who stays bought which probably describes a large number of today's solons. Whoring is used as a descriptive term for much more than sex workers, including expert witnesses in litigation who play the game of you pay it and I'll say it or retained university reserarchers doing work for corporate interests.

Yes, let's all endorse casually referring to women as whores!

It doesn't matter if he would have used the same word referring to a man (which we don't know he would have), he actually used it referring to a woman. It seems that the fact that Grayson is considered a liberal means that he couldn't have had any sexist intent in his comment... he's one of the good guys! But there is a serious problem with proclaiming someone a liberal hero just because he says the Republican plan is to die quickly and Cheney is like a vampire. And it's not that Republicans might get offended, it's that we don't know who the guy is other than a bombthrower. Just because he aggressively mocks Republicans (which may be more of a political/media move than out of ideological conviction) doesn't mean he's incapable of sexism, or that he doesn't possess any other sundry negative qualities. The "defense" from his spokesman, which implies that it was appropriate to call her a whore because he perceived that she insulted his intelligence, doesn't instill a lot of confidence that he possesses much sensitivity on such issues.

People are putting way too much stock in this guy, and at some point, if we keep elevating him, he's going to make us look pretty bad. I'm glad to see other Dem members of Congress distancing themselves from him, and I'm afraid the more he speaks, the more other Dems will have to do the same.

I agree that the same line would be apropos in reference to a male lobbyist. But context matters, he wasn't talking about a male lobbyist or lobbyists in general. I'm sure Republicans would consider it apropos to say McChrystal should put Obama in his place, but that doesn't mean it wasn't sexist when they said it about Pelosi. But I guess it's me who is sexist for thinking that "whore" could be seen as a gender based attack, after all, there are lots of male whores out there. My bad.

No Democrat should be talking to Alex Jones. Period. No sane person should be talking to him. It's amusing to me that the same people who assail any Democrat goes on Fox News as a weakling, are now praising their new truth-telling hero for something he said on the Alex Jones show.

Keep in mind that Jones is someone--in addition to his multiple fraudulent 9/11 conspiracy claims--has a film out called "The Obama Deception" in which he claims that so-called banker "elites" engineered the 2008 Wall Street crash in order to install their "puppet" Barack Obama as President of the United States. Grayson has again served as a catalyst for a long discussion (above) primarily focused on good political strategies, when to be and not to be nice, misogyny and so on. Of course, what he really dares to speak to is the fact that people in positions of wealth and power deliberately kill other people every day in order to maintain or even enhance their wealth and power. Deliberately kill. Lots of layers erected between themselves and the actual dying, but they do it knowingly every day and without conscience or consequences. They employ others to do the actual dirty work. Calling these people out also is necessary to eventually bring down the entire mess. Kudos to Grayson. He will fall, but with honor, in my opinion.

I dunno - when major players who lead and/or are associated with the opposition party regularly call the sitting President a communist, fascist, Nazi, socialist, liar, cheater, and many other grievously insulting names (e.g., shouting out "liar" during a national address before a joint session of Congress, and then defending it after the fact, almost immediately after a half-assed apology, to the daily load of propaganda from Faux News), getting this worked up over somebody calling a former Enron bigwig who makes her living on K Street as an hourly rate "public face" [hit man? hit person?] for companies or people who have hired her to work the political system and media for their financial benefit a "K Street Whore" seems a little oversensitive. K Street Whore is, incidentally, an expression that has been out there for years, and has been used much more commonly to describe males than females, largely because males still dominate the K Street lobbying world. But to apologize because some douchebag (or several douchebags) in the GOP and the corporate media get their panties in a wad (sorry for the sexist metaphor) is a classic reflection of what a bunch of total pussies the democrats have become.

Thankfully, Grayson doesn't seem to give a $hit. I hope he keeps it up, making the idiots and a-holes on the right squirm, and helping the pussies who call themselves "Democratic party leaders" in the center-left to grow a pair. Sheesh.

A rose is a rose...She's a player in a very high stakes dirty business (if this is an authentic memo from her Enron days [snagged from a Ron Paul site http://www.ronpaulforums.com/showthread.php?t=194860]):

Quote:
To: Ken Lay and Steve Kean
From: Enron governmental affairs executive Linda Robertson
Date: June 1, 2001
Subject: The President's Dinner, A Congressional Salute Honoring President Bush and Vice President Cheney, June 7, 2001, in Washington, DC
...The President's Dinner is a joint fundraising effort by the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) and the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC). We contacted both Congressman Tom DeLay and the House Senate Dinner committee to ensure that Enron could fully participate in The President's Dinner and receive credit for money we have already committed to the Committees earlier this year.
With the assistance of Congressman Tom DeLay, we were able to apply our previously contributed soft money toward this dinner. Consequently, we will be credited as giving $250,000 to this event, even though we are being asked to give only $50,000 in new soft money. Our earlier contributions of $100,000 each to the NRCC and NRSC will make up the remaining money. You will be listed as Co-Chair of the event, the highest level of giving. We will be crediting Congressmen DeLay, Armey, Barton and Tauzin for raising the $100,000 allocation for the NRCC. As for $100,000 we earlier gave the NRSC, Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison has requested that Enron give her some credit for raising the money. We would like to split it among several other Senators.
In addition, Congressman Tom DeLay has asked Enron to contribute $100,000 to his leadership committee, ARMPAC, through a combination of corporate and personal money from Enron's executives. ARMPAC funds will be used to assist other House Members as well as the redistricting effort in Texas. We will be meeting this request over the course of this calendar year...

"Grayson Calls Lobbyist 'K Street Whore'"

OK, and I should be offended by this, why....?
If the lobbyist quacks like a duck, walks like a duck....
Well, you get my meaning.

Grayson is not afraid to stand up to bullies. I support that.
Next distraction please.
