During an appearance yesterday on Hardball, Rep. Alan Grayson (D-FL) jokingly suggested that former Vice President Dick Cheney is a vampire.

Chris Matthews asked Grayson what he thinks of Cheney's attacks on President Obama for "dithering" on Afghanistan.

"Well, my response is -- and by the way, I have trouble listening to what he says sometimes, because of the blood that drips from his teeth while he's talking," said Grayson. "But my response is this: He's just angry because the president doesn't shoot old men in the face. But by the way, when he was done speaking, did he just then turn into a bat and fly away?"

Even Matthews, no Cheney fan himself, was shocked: "Oh God -- we gotta keep a level here. Let me ask you this: Don't you have any Republican friends?"

Grayson laughed, and said that some of his best friends are Republicans.

This is the right approach, in my opinion. People like Cheney don't mind when others are critical of them. They pretty much revel in it, actually. But what they can't stand is when someone ridicules them and makes it clear that he doesn't even take them seriously.

Although I have a feeling that the ironic hyperbole probably flies over Cheney's head. Or at least Liz Cheney's head.

That's right. Unless and until Cheney announces he is going to run for something, his opinions should be ignored or be made into punch lines. Especially since he has been wrong on EVERYTHING!
Giving any import to his input is like still listening to Bill Kristol.

What do you mean, "wrong on EVERYTHING!"?

Cheney did exactly all the right things to maximize oil industry profits.

Actually, Bush and Cheney even screwed that up. When Iraq opened up oil contracts to foreigners for the first time in decades last summer the best contracts went to Canada and China.

And if Alan did lose his FL House seat for being speaking truth to stupid? He needs to rebound with a Senate run.

Being ballsy is the only thing that will SAVE his seat.

Alan Grayson is absolutely the only living Democrat who understands that the way to win ANY election is to stand up on your hind legs and say, "This is what I stand for and anybody who doesn't agree can fuck off and die."

That's the way repugs have been winning for 30 years. It's the way dems used to win for the 50 years before that.

And it's the ONLY way dems are going to hang on to Congress and the White House - by emulating Alan Grayson.

Agreed. And I think if Creigh Deeds had done that in his gubernatorial campaign, had trumpeted some of the things that he has been working for in the state legislature over the years, he wouldn't be sadly trailing McDonnell in the polls, and Virginia might not be about to fall back in the Republican column.

Which gives us a fantastic contrarian explanation of R districts, doesn't it?

All those American citizens who followed the the guys on talk radio, voted straight R; described themselves as "conservative"... think about it:

All they were really doing, as natural-born Followers, was looking for a guy with balls that they could follow. And who would protect them. That is why people like Rush always could describe America as "a conservative nation"; their conservative heroes talked like political bikers with fists and weaponry.

Well, along comes an unabashed liberal, carrying his cojones in a wheelbarrow. He stands up in front of his "R" district, and does what he does without batting an eye. When the howls of Outrage [tm] come, he doubles-down on the offense factor. So what happens?

Something like four potential Republican opponents have bowed-out from running against him in his red district, because he's becoming a rock star to all these "red" people.

Fuck "apologizing"... THIS IS HOW WE SHOULD HAVE BEEN DOING IT, ALL ALONG.

To borrow the words of Spiro Agnew (something I rarely do), Dick Cheney is nothing but a "nathering nabob of negativism."

His opinions about current events are also about as relevant as those of other living former Vice-Presidents. So, does anyone care what Walter Mondale thinks about this stuff? Or Dan Quayle?

I didn't think so.

Sit down, Mr. Cheney, and STFU. Your disastrous fifteen minutes were up in January.

Why is Kurtz acting like this is "out of bounds" on the front page?

Newsflash: "blood tripping from teeth" is an excellent way to describe a ghoulish, war-and-torture-happy ex-VP. When the media acts as if such characterizations are "out of bounds," they are legitimizing the murderous schemes of the Bush White House as simply "right-leaning," or "very conservative."

No. Murderous. Ghoulish.

I don't think it's great for the nation to have this sort of "political discussion", but now that Cheney is no longer holding the reins of the country I do think it's probably the most effective means of neutralalizing someone like Cheney.

These comments are akin to the "flip-flop" waving Bush supporters of 2004. Ther comments are mean spirited and don't contribute to any discussion - but they make Cheney into a punch line.

What Grayson is clearly trying to do is to evoke another classic case of Republican Outrage [tm]... if they haven't already, they* (* = not to mention some Village Democrats, who will likely want in on the action) will be calling for Grayson's resignation, abject apology, head on a platter, small head on a platter, etc. etc...

I could just tell, watching that segment: that is exactly what Grayson wants them to do!

... so he can have another opportunity to tell them all to Stick It.

Don't get me wrong, I am glad that there is a Democrat that will act as attack dog. But Grayson was last month's cause célèbre.

What I want instead is for Democrats to demonstrate their supposed new found spines when they vote for real health care reform. I'm seeing a little more of that lately. But the contrast only exists because there was none of it before.

Well, gotta wait for a vote before they can do that... in the meantime, let the rest of the dems - and prospective democratic candidates - see that someone who calls the republicans out on the issues as Grayson did w/healthcare, who isn't afraid to mock the very idea that you should pay attention to people like Cheney (did he actually address anything Cheney said? He just totally dissed the guy, and by extension those giving Cheney any play), can still get air-time (which they all want) and campaign contributions (which they all want), and hopefully even get re-elected in a 'red' district.

Grayson gets re-elected, you're going to see democratic congresscritters develop more balls, or ballsier ones getting elected in 'red' districts. Votes will happen when there's an opportunity to vote. Lessons in not kowtowing to the right can come when their opportunities arise, too.

I've certainly said worse about Cheney. That said, I do not think talk like this from Democratic elected officials is particularly helpful. It just opens up an opportunity to create false equivalences between Democrats and the crazies in the GOP like Bachmann (who I noticed was Matthew's next guest, who he called a "Hardball favorite").

That said, Grayson seems to get that this is an issue that deeply impacts people's lives. This is live or death stuff, and he was right to draw attention to that fact. But he shouldn't let himself be used for entertainment value by the likes of Chris Matthews in order to extend his 15 minutes of fame, and it is starting to seem like that is the case.

Look, I understand that comments like this provide good entertainment value for partisan Democrats, and there is a certain feeling of satisfaction in seeing someone like Grayson who can dish out insults and over-the-top rhetoric as easily as it comes to Republicans. But in my opinion, stuff like this doesn't get us closer to where we want to be on any important issues.

It just turns into a little Hardball sideshow...first Grayson says something outrageous, after the commercial break comes Michelle Bachmann to spout another conspiracy theory. I'm sure Grayson has been good for ratings, which is why he is everywhere right now.

I like my Democrats tough, but I also like them to behave reasonably. In the media world I would cite Rachael Maddow as the best possible example for how to advance progressive ideas in a way that is forceful and persuasive without giving in to cheap, over-the-top rhetoric. She doesn't get angry, she doesn't call anybody names, she just tells the truth in a way that anybody can understand. Because when it comes down to it, calling Cheney a vampire (or whatever, like I said I've called him worse) isn't going to persuade anyone who doesn't already think the guy is evil.

Maybe it's not the most harmful thing in the world, but I don't see it as particularly helpful either.

Every effective party needs ONE attack dog.

Like LBJ in the Senate.

Or, as this WaPo article says:

Attack Dog Needed?
http://voices.washingtonpost.com/thefix/morning-fix/morning-fix-an-attack-dog-need.html

"Without someone hammering Republicans on health care, the task has fallen largely to outside interest groups -- the most notable of which are Health Care for America Now and several of the large labor unions, which have spent heavily on television ads slamming the insurance industry for seeking to block health care and line its pockets.

"There are some within the party who reject the idea that an attack dog is necessary, arguing that voters want solutions and not negative attacks from their politicians. "It seems like we have an abundance of snarling canines," said former Nebraska senator Bob Kerrey (D).

But, politics is a game of choices -- the candidate or party that is able to define the choice in terms favorable to them usually wins."

"Like it or not, Republicans have been relentless in their willingness to slam the Obama health care plan as -- among other things -- detrimental to seniors, sketchy when it comes to end of life care and almost certain to raise taxes on the middle class.

"In politics, an attack with no response is often believed. Democrats' lack of an attack dog has meant that they have left too many Republican hits unanswered -- a problem not only for the remainder of the health care debate but the next several years of the Obama presidency."

Grayson is actually much less aggressive about Cheney than the situation warrants, and if we applied the same law to our own war criminals that we applied to the Nazis at Nuremberg, then...

Dick Cheney would be hanged for crimes against humanity, and idiotic discussions about what Alan Grayson said on TV would be beside the point... as if they aren't already.

Over 1,000,000 Iraqis have died as a result of the invasion and occupation of Iraq, which Cheney and his sock-puppet George W. Bush lied us into.

The only question worth asking about the torture-pig and pervert Cheney is...

What time is the hanging?

Time to call these guys out. Good on Grayson.

Why is it when Cheney comes out of his cave to piss all over the country, the news just reports it straight up as "Former VP says". If someone like Grayson takes a justified swipe at the evil old troll, the respose is one of "shock!". Suddenly, the news media's dainty Victorian sensibilities are offended! LOL

It's about time to kick these wingnuts to the curb.

hahahaha! The only thing more awesome than Grayson is all the namby-pamby wusses claiming to be on our side tut-tutting him.

They whine about Democrats not speaking out. Now they whine about Democrats speaking out. It kind of makes you think they just want to whine.

Well this "namby-pamby wuss" has spent hundreds of hours volunteering for Democratic campaigns over the past 15 years. I had a gun pointed at my face in NH while volunteering for Kerry in 2004. Now I'm on the "other side" because I don't think Grayson's rhetoric is particularly helpful, even if I agree with the content of his remarks?

I'm not sure why you put quotes around the words "other side", when it's patently obvious that I never said them.

That's not true, actually. I *am* sure why you did that: because it's easier to tilt windmills of your own creation than real ones.

Thanks for your help in getting Democrats elected. Now, if only we could find people who will support the good ones once they're actually IN office....

Oh well - can't have everything, I suppose.

Right, you only said "claiming to be on our side." I'll let you explain what you meant by that, but I interpreted it to mean anyone who disagreed with you on this was actually on the "other side." Perhaps you meant something else by that, but I wasn't trying to put words in your mouth, it is how I honestly interpreted your comments.

As for supporting good Democrats once elected, I do not think that means you have to agree with everything they say (or how they say it) on television. I think we can disagree about whether Grayson's comments here were helpful to the causes he and I both support without resorting to hurtful rhetoric and name calling.

Anyway, I'll let you have the last word if you want it, as I don't really want to get into a big back-and-forth.

I respect your efforts but I totally disagree. Pointing a gun is not equivalent to robust criticism. Bad mouthing someone is free speech. Threats of violence are not. So I'm not sure why you mention it. Grayson spoke his mind. No trickery involved. What's the deal? As I mentioned above, the GOP can menace its opponents with lies, smears and thinly veiled threats, and it hardly evokes a whimper. When the Dems fight back, then we get these delicate sensitivities about "manners" bubbling up.

Dems always fall for this trap of "taking the high road". Meanwhile the GOP goes for the knees, and usually wins. I'm not advocating becoming sleazy or dishonorable like the GOP. But for christsake, take off the gloves once in a while.

Assymetrical warfare from the GOP is sadly often effective. Time to call a spade a spade. Cheney, FoxNews ... all deserve to be called out.

Hi, I was not trying to compare Grayson's words to the threat of violence made against me. I do not think the two are comparable. I brought that up only to respond to the implication that, because I don't like Grayson's rhetoric here, that I am not sufficiently committed to Democratic causes.

I want Democrats to be tough too, but here are ways to be tough without resorting to name calling and cheap rhetoric. I can think of a dozen better ways to respond off the top of my head. For example, a better response might have been "This is coming from the person who bungled the effort in Afghanistan in the first place and lied our way into another war we didn't need to get into. So I don't think people are too interested in anything Dick Cheney has to say about the President's approach to Afghanistan. If the American people had wanted us to keep making the same foreign policy mistakes over and over again they would have elected a Republican to do it." A something like that is a tough "gloves off" statement, that also addresses and dismisses Cheney's criticism of Obama. Calling him a vampire gets you a lot of attention, but it doesn't advance your argument.

I love me some Grayson and I hope he keeps zingin' 'em!

That said, if this was all he had in his arsenal, I'd be getting nervous right around now that he would emerge as nothing more than a smartass with no "there there."

Luckily, that's not the case, he can run circles around them on constitutional issues, banking law, healthcare reform and more. Which make his whack-a-mole routines so effective -- they have absolutely nowhere to run for cover.

I'm savoring this, it's wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy overdue.

Exactly. The guy is not a simple blowhard with no substance. He takes down the Republicans using logic and knowledge -- as he did on the Acorn issue just a couple of days ago. Watch him:
http://www.bradblog.com/?p=7481
Made them look like the ignoramuses they are in terms of Constitutional matters.
That said, I wouldn't be happy if all the Dems were running around doing this. I think Grayson doing it is great -- a spearhead into the opposition. And it allows other strong but not as mouthy Dems to play good cop and still push for the same things.

Let's put this in perspective: if Dick Cheney had NOT gotten his way on EVERYTHING for the last 8 years, we could have already paid for the current health care reform proposals more than two times over, just from the money saved from his wars of opportunity.

Instead, the money went to Halliburton, Blackwater, and to the various expenses one incurs when one use advanced weaponry all over the globe in a seemingly-intentional effort to ruin the US' reputation in as many places as possible.

So let's count up the deaths. Several thousand on 9/11, because he and his boss couldn't be bothered to pay attention to threats that didn't involve invading Iraq. Several thousand more US troops since, because he wanted to make lots of money off of it. An estimated 48,000 more a year...those Americans who, according to a recent study, die prematurely from lack of basic health care. And, ah yes, a few hundred thousand more of the "enemy" that we killed and maimed because they were unfortunate enough to live in the country that Dick Cheney targeted for profit-mining fake-war operations.

This guy doesn't just have blood dripping from his teeth—he's been immersed bodily in it for a decade. Grayson is being kind.

Eric, I take exception to this:

"Even Matthews, no Cheney fan himself, was shocked: "Oh God -- we gotta keep a level here. Let me ask you this: Don't you have any Republican friends?""

Isn't this the typical double standard the media usually pulls? Metthews is part and parcel of the GOP-enabling media culture. His pretences at being "even handed" are bullshit. Take for example how he INVITES ON THE AIR gunnuts who show up with weapons at Obama rallies. And then pretends ot be outraged, all the while enjoying ratings and giving a platform for bigots/haters/crazies.

Sorry, the Chris Matthews hypocricy is a bit too much. I think we have the usual assymetry here of the MSM being "even handed" by allowing all sorts of lies/smear/threats by the GOP, with perhaps some chiding here and there, while deliberately overreacting to mild and measured Dem pushback.

Ex. Cheney can tell Sen. Leahy to "go fuck yourself" on the Senate floor, but a joking reference to Cheney as a vampire is over the line?

Nothing here but typical MSM hypocrisy played out per the usual script.

Good Point.

Do you wonder whether the demographics of the viewing audience is the key to what you describe ?

I think the daytime cable viewer tends to be older, whiter, more likely to be male than female, more shut-in ... whatever ... the sort of person who would tune in to this sort of stuff ...

Daytime cable viewers dearly love a blowhard - that is beyond any sort of doubt. Matthews is one of the blowhardiest of the blowhards.

The viewers would never allow a person that opinionated and loud into their home, car or club, of course. Example : the recent refusal of NFL owners to allow A Certain Blowhard to join their little club of owners.

About Grayson : did you see the clip of him questioning Broun about bills of attainder ? I recommend it : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKz5ZHM8kFM

Grayson is a thinking man - I hope he keeps it up.

Since Cheney once again chooses to disrespect the office of the President & the President himself, a tactic which he & his people repeatedly called un-American, then he opens the door to all criticism. It was open anyway but his own actions make him fairgame. Right now he should be thinking sticks & stones & damned thankful he's not imprisoned for a few lifetimes. That's what President Obama is really dithering about & Dick shouldn't stir the pot.
