House Republicans slammed the new Democratic health care reform bill this morning, but didn't say when or if they'll be offering a reform package of their own.

GOP leader John Boehner led a press conference to voice his concerns about the bill an hour or so after Pelosi was done presenting it outside. He walked carrying the nearly 2,000 page house bill, which he dropped with a thud onto the podium.

"Through August and September, the American people made it clear they want know part of a government-run system for providing health care," he said. "[But] this bill amounts to a government takeover of our health care system."

House GOP conference leader Mike Pence echoed the claim.

"This is day of profound disappointment for millions of Americans," he said. "Democrats didn't get the message" from the town hall protests this summer.

Rep. Roy Blunt (R-MO) said it was clear from the language of the bill that Democrats intended to put the government in charge of health care. He pointed out that the word "shall" appeared in the bill's text "over 3,000 times."

The GOP made a strong and repeated case about what they think is wrong in Pelosi's bill -- but they gave no indication of when (or if) they'll offer a clear alternative of their own.

"We have a number of ideas," Boehner said. "But we're not sure of how the Democrats will proceed."

Boehner ducked the question of a GOP alternative many times in the press conference, claiming that the party will will offer its ideas "sometime soon."

Simple question that the MSM needs to demand an answer from these GOp and Blue Dogs: How is it that an option that is severley limited and doesn't go into effect until 2013 constitute a government takeover of health care? Holy shit, the MSM just feeds into the dismal abyss we face in this country in that we can not provide health care to its people where 44,000 die every year. It is so fucking sad to know that we the people are just fools living in a corporate owned and run gov't!

The media should be following the Republicans' refusal to offer any alternatives as closely as they have followed a) the number of times President Obama has golfed on Sunday b) the number of times that Obama has golfed on Sundays with a woman c) whether Michelle Obama should show off her arms d) when Bo was going to arrive d) that whiff of cigarette smoke that had Jake Tapper so very worried e) the censorship {sic} of their sister network, Fox Noise.

The number of times donors have used the bowling alley. The number of times Obama has golfed compared to the number of times W went golfing. Whether Obama was dissing Jessica. The artwork the Obamas selected. Whether they dissed the French by having dinner on their own. Whether staffers eat the healthy fruit or go for the candies. Whether Obama is too exposed, underexposed, or something else.

The President and First Lady must have hides as tough as rhinoceroses at this point.

Sometimes stupid is funny. This time it's just depressing.

Yes. Apparently one of his staffers just discovered there is a "find (word)" feature in MS Word and decided to play with it. Our tax dollars at work! :-)

Yes, the House GOP knows what it doesn't want in a health care bill: Affordable medical insurance.

Dear GOP-

Lead, follow, or get out of the way. Since you have nothing but objections (some of which have proven to be pure bulls**t) but can't produce a clear alternative despite a decade in power and months in the midst of this current debate, I suggest "get out of the way".

LFC-
"You Lie!" Wake up and pay attention. The GOP has at least 50 health care related bills in congress. Ever heard of the idea of Tort Reform? You simply are spreading lies like the rest of the liberals. I'm not "getting out of the way", I'm trying to save my company's health insurance plan, and my family's access to care, which is just fine, thank you. But you want to destroy all that. Sorry, but I'm opposed, and it is my right to express my opinions, just like the GOP congressmen are doing. Or do you subscribe to Obama's campaign to destroy free speech, too?

50 health care related plans? Wow. Obviously Boehner knows nothing about them. Maybe you should call his office and tell him? This is great news!!!!!

Um, how come Republican leadership is so inept then? I mean, with all these plans to reform health care, when Boehner was asked about it, this is what the response is:

"We have a number of ideas," Boehner said. "But we're not sure of how the Democrats will proceed."

Boehner ducked the question of a GOP alternative many times in the press conference, claiming that the party will will offer its ideas "sometime soon."

You obviously know things Boehner doesn't now. I'm very impressed.

Tort Reform has been debunked too many times and I don't understand why the GOP keeps pushing it.

And free speech does not mean a news organizations gets to tell lies and not get called on it. And if you think FOX is free to say what they want, so can the WH - right?

Tort reform is only a part of the solution. Ezra Klein writes "opinion", the same thing that some shows on Fox News present - "opinion". Just because Ezra the liberal blogger debunks tort reform, doesn't mean it's "news". The resistance is from the liberal lawyers in congress (like the wirters of the earlier paper you cite, Clinton & Obama). We need to let doctors do their jobs, rather than have them go on the defense. Yes, if a doc is drunk and botches a surgery, he should be sued, and have his license taken away. But no, they should not be forced to specify a whole bunch of expensive tests, ones they think aren't needed, just to cover their butts. People are human, they make mistakes, they shouldn't be sued for millions for honest errors. (And guess where the money comes from in the end? You & me.) But since most of our congressman are lawyers, they love perpetuating this business.

On another point, it took me a while to get doctors I trust. There is nothing in either party's plan to educate more doctors and nurses, so we'll have to ration care to cover all the additional "insured". Which means me & my family will get less care. This is good???

Where's the dialog? Dems & Reps firing jabs at each other. Is this the "unity" and "new direction" we were all promised? The Dems need to allow some of the Reps bills to be discussed in committee and include some of those ideas. But since the Dems have such an overwhelming majority, with such a leftward lean, they block any dialog & cooperation, and we're all going to get steamrolled.

We the people need to demand that congress takes its time on this stuff. HR3200 is up to 2000 pages, and they'll only get 72 hours to read it before voting. Anybody really think that we'll get good legislation that way? Why don't they take just the "savings" ideas in HR3200, break those out of the rest of the garbage, and pass a couple of them. Let's see in 12 months whether they actually "save" the money they are supposed to. If so, let's move on the next few items. The giant bureaucracy won't solve any of our problems.

Easy answer here...the GOP wants a ton of money from all of their friends of America...the corporate heads of state!

I am mystified how folks, like some commenters here, don't think tort reform matters. Perhaps, not on their planet, but it matters plenty here on earth. The current system unfairly tortures the medical profession targeting innocent physicians more than negligent ones. It wastes tens of billions of dollars (we can argue exactly how much, but it seems like real money to me) on defensive medicine, which exposes patients to risk and expense. Finally, most victims of true negligence are never captured and compensated. Which sounds more dysfunctional, the health care system or the medical malpractice system?
