So what exactly is the deal with Sen. Jim DeMint's (R-SC) trip to Honduras -- which is being done in an effort to support the recent military coup, contrary to current U.S. foreign policy -- and the failed effort by Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) to stop it?
Frederick Jones, communications director for the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and a Kerry spokesman, explained the distinction to us: Kerry was not blocking DeMint from going to Honduras -- any American can legally travel there -- but the issue was over government funding and plane travel for an official fact-finding mission. "Clearly, as an American citizen, Sen. DeMint is free to travel to Honduras commercially."
Kerry, as chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, blocked DeMint's funding because DeMint has been holding up key nominations for foreign policy officials in Latin America -- thus obstructing the committee's business and the U.S. government overall in working on the region. In response, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) stepped in and obtained the funding for DeMint from another source, which has not yet been identified.
Calls to the DeMint and McConnell offices were not returned. Jones' statement, firing back at DeMint for blocking the nominations, is available after the jump.
"Senator DeMint's statement wins an A for 'audacity.' Thanks to DeMint's intransigence, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee can't hold hearings to receive testimony from the most knowledgeable and relevant witnesses on our policy in Central and South America. Sen. DeMint is blocking the nominations of two key officials who will implement President Obama's foreign policy in the Western Hemisphere -- Arturo Valenzuela, President Obama's nominee to be Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, and Tom Shannon, the current Assistant Secretary and nominee to be Ambassador to Brazil. The Foreign Relations Committee always prefers to operate in a bi-partisan and collegial fashion, and it did so when it approved these two nominees by votes of 14 to 4 for Mr. Shannon and 15 to 4 for Mr. Valenzuela. But now Sen. DeMint refuses to let the nominations of two distinguished public servants even be considered on the floor of the Senate. While he continues to claim that all he wants is a debate, the fact is that he has repeatedly turned down offers to have a reasonable debate on the floor, followed by a vote, so that he can continue to make a political point. When Senator DeMint returns, he should finally allow the fair debate he has been asking for."

Rachel Maddow had a reporter on yesterday about this story who said that McConnell got the funding through the Armed Services Committee. For what it's worth. It seems that Kerry didn't want to come right out and say that DeMint is violating the Logan Act, so he blocked DeMint on the basis of "you're not doing your job on this committee so no vacation money for you."

Yup! There's a very high bar to pass before we can call it treason. The US is not a war with Honduras, so DiMint can do any dumbass thing he wants down there.
And even an American citizen aiding the Taliban or Al-Queda can't be prosecuted for treason because we didn't declare war on those 2 countries. Of course the American would be hauled off on terrorist charges, but treason, no.
Frankly, I'm enjoying the "Republican Hypocricy Greatest Hits" that's been playing all over the country. (Yes, I mean you, John Ensign) I wish Democrats shoot back some some talking points from that list when the Republicans bitch & moan at everything Democrats do.

So a democratic country following their constitution and removing their President who wanted to remain in office for life is a military coup? That is leftist hogwash. The Honduran Supreme Court found Zelaya in violation of their constitution. The Attorney General asked the military to exile him from the country.
Now a United States Senator wants to do a fact-finding mission to observe their elections and find out first hand the details and it is treason. That is false and if you don't want to recognize the facts, then so be it.

You're probably thinking of former IL Rep. Jerry Weller, who married the daughter of the former dictator of Guatemala. She is herself a prominent politician (in Guatemala).

Don't I remember that Harry Reid refused to honor holds placed by Democratic senators in the previous Congress? I'm thinking in particular of one by Chris Dodd, but I can't remember the legislation; maybe it was the provision in FISA reform to give the telecoms retroactive immunity for violations of privacy laws?
Why is it that he can sweep past any hold placed by a Democrat, but a hold placed by a Republican is a permanent roadblock??

Demint is a bit of a Ollie North wannabe, but the facts are that South America has its own plans for self-determination, and the winds of progress have blown these guys into the dustbin of history. In a way the trip is good in the sense that it just further reinforces to the South Americans that the ideology that Demint represents is rooted in antidemocratic totalitarian ideals, and it's done nothing but create bloody mayhem for it's citizens. As folks like Demint try to retain a modicum of power, they are forced more into the open for all of us to see and hence make it easier to apply successful vermin countermeasures.

I just got off the phone with a DeMint (sounds French) staffer who adamantly insists that this is just a fact-finding visit as is the right of any Senator. He insists that Zelaya was properly ousted under the Honduran constitution, and that it was "NOT A COUP!"
I mentioned the Logan Act and he kind of got belligerent. I just stated, as a constituent, that I thought a) it was a coup and b)it is a violation of the Logan Act and c) that, as it is the position of this country to recognize Zelaya, what DeMint (sounds French) is doing is just plain wrong.
DeMint was in close competition with Norm Coleman for the role of emptiest suit in DC. With Coleman gone, the honor is all big Jim's. What a complete and utter tool, a boil on South Carolina's ass, and just an all-around prick.

Call them now. They will claim no coup has taken place, which is bull–loney. A President is taken from his home by armed men in the middle of the night and then thrown out of the country. And Jim DeMint says that’s not a coup!
Jim DeMint is a LIAR.
They clearly have talking points to read off to you. Ask them why DeMint supports suspension of freedoms in the lead up to a national election.
Ask them how Zelaya could have been extending his stay in office when the referendum he wanted would have been voted on the same day as when his successor would be elected?

How did DeMint get the pass from Carl Levin? Shouldn't Kerry be sending Levin a "strongly worded letter"?
Maybe we can get Rep. Alan Grayson to kick DeMint in the balls.

I really hope the Democrats can find one collective spine among them to push back hard on this. We need them to stand up for what's right and to make an example of Jim DeMint.
This is exactly the kind of case where there will be no pushback furor if the Democrats bite their tongue. they need to speak up, speak out and to show their outrage at DeMint's irresponsible actions.
Of course, they won't. They will, for the 4,000th time, play the doormat for the Republicants.
So, we have to do our part. And I hope TPM will drill in on this specious claim that there was no coup in Honduras.

Hey bud, it's difficult in the internet age to wag fingers at behavior just performed by your own side. It's why there aren't hearings on secrecy, the Iraq war, Congressional involvement in the credit crisis, etc..
Here's a link to Pelosi going rogue to Syria recently against the wishes of the President. Now, STFU.

It's kind of embarrassing that it's come to this: elected democrats in positions of leadership allowing elected republicans to not only endlessly obstruct the people's business in Congress but to also fly around the world advocating armed insurrection against duly elected governments.
DeMint's giving a giant wedgie to the Obama administration. But then, it's unclear why anyone would have expected DeMint to be something other than his usual sore-loser, dim-witted bully self. He supports corrupt corporate rule and will screw ordinary, non-wealthy people every chance he gets. Duh, that's what republicans do.
His trip down south is a dog whistle to the rabid right. It's this week's "you lie," but the stage is bigger. They're escalating their attacks against the duly-elected U.S. government.
Is their next step to cause physical harm on some level? Do they think their coup attempt here at home will be successful? And are the democrats going to pretend to be surprised when it happens?
Yeah, that whole bi-partisanship thing is working out real good. /s

It takes only 60 votes to invoke cloture and shut down DeMint's blocks on the nominations. What is the point of trying to win Senate seats if we don't wield the power when we have it?
Or how about calling a quick recess, and then recess-appoint them? The Republicans did this all the time, for 8 straight years.

Chuck technically this isn't a secret hold. That a mystery usually solved by TPM calling all senators and asking them to confirm or deny to narrow it down to the culprit. Everybody knows about this one. Any senator at any time can put a hold on any nominee that has to be confirmed by the senate.

Is anyone on this blog aware that the Library of Congress Center for Legal Research determined that the ouster of Zelaya was legal and within the rules of the Honduran Constitution? On the otherhand, Hugo Chavez's role in the events leading up to the ouster are against international convention. Veteran Sandinista Manuel D'Escoto has done his part to provide disinformation support, and Miguel Insulza, veteran of Allende's leftist regime in Chile has been the manipulator. DeMint and other members of Congress are now aware that the picture painted has not been genuine and they are going to Honduras to find out what the truth is. Brazil has also become suspicious of what is happening there and is sending their own group of Deputies to do the same as DeMint. I applaud them.
There is no violation of the Logan Act as Kerry has suggested, and the sun will shine on all aspects of their trips, and Honduras is a U.S. friendly country. Recall Nancy Pelosi's trips to Visit Chavez, Correa, Morales, and after that, Syria? Now that could be a problem for the Speaker lady, as she has no authority to negotiate or discuss policy with any foreign country, but she never did release the details of her talks with the leaders of those countries which were, and still are, hostile to the United States. Maybe we should ask her now.
I suspect my comment will cause some of you to reaffirm the need to silence all conservatives for daring to speak out against the party line of the left, but that won't really happen, truth is, there are now more conservatives than ever bfore.
