The GOP's new line of attack against health care reform is starting to sound familiar.
On Monday, we reported on the House GOP's plans to target AARP in the health care reform debate. Republican leaders say AARP is supporting changes to the Medicare system included in Democratic health care reform bills because they would result in more sales of AARP-branded insurance. They claim that "backroom deals" between executives of the AARP and Democratic leadership -- deals the GOP say are designed to protect the executives' high salaries -- led to the group's pro-Medicare reform stance.
Yesterday, the message gained traction among the right wing commentariat. AARP flatly denies the claims and says it's beginning to feel a little like the GOP's new ACORN.
"Oh, absolutely," an AARP official told TPMDC. "They're using their standard methods to target us."
Yesterday, right wing blogs and publications picked up the story. Michelle Malkin retweeted the House GOP talking points on the topic and Human Events published a story echoing the GOP claims. Malkin and the conservative magazine focused on the corruption message, highlighting the "back-room" dealing.
The GOP is using more than just rhetoric to go after the group. Rep. Dave Reichert (R-WA) claims to have launched an investigation into AARP in his home state. Reichert says his "ongoing" investigation focuses on whether AARP should be classified as an insurance company because of its revenue from royalties the group gets from licensing its brand for insurance products. AARP says it's not aware of the investigation, and Reichert suggested to reporters Monday that it was essentially stalled. But the question of whether AARP is an insurance company or not is at the center of the GOP messaging on the group.
For their part, AARP officials say they're not worried about being taken down by the GOP attacks in the same way that ACORN was. The group has been accused of conflicts of interest many times over the years, most notably during the 2003 debate over the Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage plan. Back then, it was Democrats who vilified the AARP, claiming there was a conflict behind the the group's support for the bill, which helped to guarantee its passage.
The AARP official we spoke to said there was a different tone to those Democratic attacks however. This time around, Republicans are directly accusing the AARP of corruption and secret dealings. The official was confident the AARP will weather the controversy but said it's clear the GOP has put the group in its sights.
"It's our turn," the official said.

Whose bright idea in the Republican party was it to go after the AARP? Not only is the AARP extremely powerful (and getting more powerful every day thanks to retiring Baby Boomers), it's also made up of old people. Who tend to be conservative. Is this really who the GOP wants to attack?
Actually, I can totally see Chairman Steele coming up with an idea like this and thinking it's brilliant.

Great thing the GOP doesn't know anything about backroom deals! How did gross negligence and incompetence work out for the SEC and Madoff, Katrina and FEMA, Halliburton, Blackwater, etc. etc. etc. ad nauseam?

I have long suspected that there is a mole somewhere in the upper ranks of the GOP -- someone responsible for things like the first George Bush choosing "We Are Family" from "La Cage aux Folles" for the theme song for the 1992 GOP convention.
Maybe that mole has been Michael Steele all along!

Western WA is generally very Blue, but Reicharts district is kind of a conservative pocket where a lot of big bucks tasseled loafer types reside in McMansions. Marcy Burner is very sharp and has an impressive resume. Unfortunately, she is rather soft spoken and looks about 25, which I think has always worked against her. Voters that are not well informed saw more gravitas from Riechart because of his gray hair and his law enforcement resume, even though he is a real intellectual light weight.

How stoooopid can they get?
AARP has a mass membership, is highly popular and credible among seniors, and has the mechanisms to fight back (a grassroots network, a communications capacity, and enough money to hit back in lobbying and PR efforts).
Seniors vote in greater numbers than any other age group, and recently they have been less Democratic than other groups. If the Republicans think that attacking an icon like AARP while defending big insurance companies is going to win them votes, they are doing some pretty screwed up political calculations. Let's hope they keep it up!

Isn't the whole point of the GOP's criticism of the current proposals for health care reform that they will put the insurance companies out of business? So now they are complaining that AARP is lobbying FOR health care reform because they (as an insurance company) will make MORE money? How can the MSM not call out that contradiction?

Apparently you missed that the GOP is no longer bound by facts or past actions. For example, consider the following:
- claiming to be defenders of Medicare, after trying to slash it during the "Contract On America" phase.
- passing budgets with massive deficits after trying to force through an amendment that would have made those same budgets illegal
- do I even need to mention the ever-changing rationale for invading Iraq?

The same cannot be said of AARP. I wonder who's doing republican strategery? This is just dumb.

Dear GOP: Please continue attacking your strongest supporters. Maybe you'd like to go after members of mainstream Christianity next for not being "godly" enough compared to the evangelical wingnut base.
But seriously, do these guys even read polls anymore? The AARP-aged crowd was one of McCain's strongest supporters. Apparently they're so terrified that HCR might pass (and WORK) that they'll attack anybody that might help make that happen.

They are already going after Upstate NY Republicans in the NY-23 race for not being conservative enough and picking a moderate to run for the seat. The party is imploding. At this point the only question seems to be when it splits into two (or more) parties, who gets to keep the name Republican, and who gets custody of the elephant.

AARP isn't half the organization it purports to be, but the GOP is a pahtological group that thinks it can (and should) intimidate anyone it possibly can if it advances their cause. What kind of numbnuts on the right think it makes sense to try and smear an organization as innocuous as the AAARP? What will it be next? Puppies? Kittens? If they weren't a pack of certifiable nutcases they would be ashamed of their actions.

Umm, that's the whole point, oleeb: the AARP membership are hardly "puppies and kittens," nor is the organization "innocuous." In fact, that's a pretty patronizing characterization of a very powerful lobbying group whose members are on average politically active, relatively educated and wealthy, and highly cognizant of their interests. That's why they're members of AARP. Just because people get old, that doesn't mean they get stupid and cuddly.

So - the AARP was pivotal in the passage of the Medicare part D fiasco created by the last administration. In other words, they gave the Republicans a much needed assist in order to get that passed. But now that the AARP is helping out in further health care legislation - they get the privilege of being swift-boated. When are these organizations going to learn that helping the GOP is never a good idea?

Now I know why Kai Risdall had a segment on his show about this. He "interviewed" James Thurber, and his questions were so leading.
Here's one: "They partner with some really well-known insurance companies. United Health is certainly one. I mean these are big names."
Here's another: "The group says that they are acting in their members' interest when they do things like come out and support health-reform bill, and also that these products that they license through their Web site and lend their name to, are also screened for being appropriate for their members. Do you find that to be believable?"

The AARP can't be for death panels, that would completely ruin their membership numbers. I would think they would want to do everything they can to keep seniors alive and "auto-paying" their membership for years to come.
The GOP, on the other hand, figures it's got less than 20% of the country left in its ranks, so it might as well go for the Hail Mary play.

AARP is secretly giving millions for ad on TV to support Public Auction in the Health Care Bill. AARP made over 400,000,000 from insurance sales last year. They will be the biggest under-writers of insurance for this bill. In the early beginning they even stated they supported this bill and only back-off after so many members canceled their membership. I'm no longer a member. Back with Bill Clinton was president he and the democrats wanted to TAX SOCIAL SECURITY if you went over $18,000 total income. AARP did nothing to stop this, and later Bill Clinton was quoted as saying he was still astonished that AARP did not oppose this tax hake against seniors. If you remember it was a tie vote and Vice-President Al Gore voted for the bill. Just look at how many letters you get from New York Life, that ought to tell you they are in the insurance business big time. Wake up seniors you are being had by AARP. EX-Member
