Rep. Todd Tiahrt (R-KS), who is currently running for the Republican nomination in a contested 2010 U.S. Senate primary, has now endorsed Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman in the NY-23 special election -- the second sitting member of Congress to openly do so, after Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN).

Tiahrt's press release blasts the moderate GOP nominee Dede Scozzafava, questions her party loyalty, and casts the race as a test for the soul of the GOP:

"Doug Hoffman will be a consistent vote for conservative principles in the U.S. House of Representatives. I have no doubt he will vote for anyone other than Nancy Pelosi for Speaker of the House, which is the most important vote of each Congress. I do not have that same confidence in his opponent, who has a very similar record to Ms. Pelosi."

Tiahrt claims the New York 23 election reflects the same battle for the heart and soul of the Republican Party going on nationally.

"The Republican Party is either going to return to the party of fiscal responsibility and consistent conservative principles as it was under Ronald Reagan or it will continue down the path of 'sporadic moderation,'" Tiahrt exclaimed.

As noted before, Tiahrt is running in a Republican primary for Senate, facing off against fellow Kansas GOP Congressman Jerry Moran. Take this as a sign that support of Hoffman over Scozzafava could become its own litmus test for Republicans in the future -- as a mark of true conservatism, requiring that candidates will have not supported the GOP's actual nominee in this race.

Tiahrt Endorses Doug Hoffman in New York 23
Conservative Kansas congressman supports Conservative Party candidate over GOP pick

U.S. Representative Todd Tiahrt (R-Kansas) today endorsed Doug Hoffman in the special election to replace U.S. Representative John McHugh in New York's 23rd District.

"The Republican Party will never again be a majority party until we regain the confidence of the American people," said Tiahrt. "I believe there is room for disagreement within the party and we should not have litmus tests. However, the Republican nominee appears to have disavowed most conservative principles that are important to a vast majority of Republican voters."

Tiahrt said he believes Doug Hoffman, the Conservative Party candidate, can win the special election and would be more supportive of a conservative Republican agenda than his opponent.

Tiahrt was elected to Congress in 1994. He defeated 18-year incumbent Democrat Congressman Dan Glickman. Tiahrt is best known to New York conservatives as the author of the "Tiahrt Amendment," which protects gun owner privacy and the lives of law enforcement officers. Tiahrt is widely recognized as the true conservative Republican candidate in the U.S. Senate race in Kansas.

Owens only has 35%, in NY-23 that ruby red? or is he losing votes to Scozzafava for some reason? Is the district 65% Republican?

NY-23 has a Cook PVI of R+1 but parts of the district haven't elected a Democrat since the civil war. Hoffman (Conservative Party) actually has more money than Scozzafava (R) and is spending it, while she has been MIA. So it is a true 3-way race.

Scarce is correct, and my memory is that Obama-Biden carried this District by 1 point last Fall.

These are rural Republicans who vote as the parents voted who voted as their parents voted, etc. The pattern was established by the Civil War and embeded by all the Union war veterans. It is not, however, a right wing District although there are rightwingers there as Hoffman's numbers indicate. Its politics are fiscal responsibility and a libertarian leave me alone streak but it is not anti-government per se. This District has a bunch of dairy farmers who are dependent upon the Federal governmetal programs. They want a strong ediucation system to provide a pathway for their children to achieve some prosperity -- most likely elsewhere. It does have Fort Drum and there are, as a result, some right wingers there, but one should also remember that about 35-40% of Army enlisted men and women are African-American or Hispanic and tend to vote Democratic.

The Republicans nominated a person who could hold the District, but Hoffman has provided the opening for Owens. DeDe would hold this seat for life--or until redistricting. I can tell you that the Democratic House professionals looked at this seat as doable but the Republicans would have to F UP big time for us to win if they nominated a candidate that was a little right of center in upstate NY terms. Well they did nominate the "perfect" candidate to hold the seat, and they did F UP big time. Owens will win it appears. It also appears probable that they will nominate next year either Hoffman or another right winger, and Owens, if he does his homework and gets around to all the gas stations and other crossroads, will be re-elected. If Democrats also hold and increase their margin in the NY Senate next year, they will stengthen Owens in redistricting, disappear the seat of Republican Lee (NY definitely looses one seat in redistricting) and if they loose a second seat try to figure out how to carve up (or down) the seat held by Republican King.

It may well be the case the NY has NO Republicans in the US House in 2013. This will effectively end the Republican Party in NY State if this happens since it deprives them of a farm team for state wide office. These are the stakes and the Republicans have F UP. It is doubtful the Republicans will regain a majority in the US House with no seats in NY.

Keep going, GOP. Your key to success is moving right and rallying your base. Really truly.

Yes indeed! I hope that this becomes a national trend, with GOPers going for ultra-conservatives over mainstream (are there any left?) Republican candidates. This will ensure a bright future for Rethugs.

This is the guy who said on the House floor that if abortion was allowed in government health care that the mothers of Obama and Thomas would have aborted their children.

He's crazy.

The thug party is going to a very strange place with their ultra right wing stance. I think is very strange and I honestly believe the only people who give them any credit is a very small percentage. I can't imagine being a rational being and not think these people are beyond extreme. The moderate republicans and/or even just rational republicans know the party is dead in the water and may just have to form their own party. I do not believe the majority of this country is even close to where they are.

This is my district and i don't give a damn what this guy thinks.

Didn't the repubs scream about the supposed liberal bias and bush derangement syndrome, anybody but bush?

So why is it ok for them to say anybody but a democrat?

Nobody up here wants hoffman. He is being entirely supported by out of state money. Both he and DeDe are running nasty campaign ads, can't tell what they will do, but they know what Bill Owens will!

"...fiscal responsibility and consistent conservative principles as it was under Ronald Reagan."

Bwahahahahahahahaha! Right.

"Fiscal responsibility" from the guy that increased the national debt by 315% and gave us the biggest tax hike in American history on payroll taxes? Do "conservative principles" include selling arms to - Terrorists! - by an administration that had 138 administration officials convicted, indicted, or the subject of official investigations for official misconduct and/or criminal violations (the worst ever)?

These guys crack me up. If it wasn't so sad.

Maybe Todd should worry about Kansans & think more about the fact that he's lined himself up behind Palin & Bachman.
Or is he trying to get the Dynamic Duds to back him too?
