A new Frank Luntz strategy memo may provide some insight into the Republican's playbook as the fight over reform enters its final stages.
The memo, which you can read here, is one of many similar memos that have been circulated to politicians and activists over the last several months, including by Luntz himself.
In his previous memo, Luntz warned conservatives not to tie health care reform efforts to President Obama--the President's name, he warned, helped buoy the overall level of support for reform. Luntz now says that's not true--but he nonetheless counsels reform opponents not to use the term 'Obamacare.'
"[y]ou can talk about opposing "President Obama's Plan," Luntz writes. "But don't. While you no-longer [sic] shoot yourself in the foot by criticizing the President, you would do much better to criticize Congress."
Luntz suggests that, though the public is closely divided on the question of the need for reform, opponents are much more motivated than supporters. A full one-quarter of Americans, according to Luntz's memo, say they will actively work to defeat members of Congress who vote for reform. Slightly fewer--23 percent--say they "will be much less likely to vote for them."
By contrast, the memo holds that only 8 percent of Americans will actively work to help re-elect members who vote for reform, and 12 percent say they will be "much more likely to vote for them."
And, of course, Luntz suggests that reform opponents serve themselves best by reinforcing falsely held notions about the Democrats' health care plans with the public. "Claims of deficit-neutrality are roundly rejected and even ridiculed," Luntz writes. "No one believes that the government will enact a massive new entitlement without costing Americans more money." The CBO has found that the House's health care bill is a deficit reducer, and the non-partisan agency is expected to conclude the same about the Senate's bill.

Shorter Luntz: lie, lie, lie. But do so respectfully, please.

The concept that reform will reduce the deficit is one that the average American educated in the forty year trainwreck that is our public educational system cannot get his or her head around without help. People are always screamin' that Obama needs to do this or needs to do that, and they're almost always wrong in my virtually meaningless opinion, but providing that help is one thing the guy with the bully pulpit is uniquely suited to do.
It is the biggest problem we have with left getting buy-in from the indies.

Luntz's job is to tell the GOP what they want to hear.

Luntz, a known scum bag in the real world, sounds like the CEO of reasoning in the tea bagerry world.
A part of me is glad these people are so far from sanity of the mainstream electorate and a part of me is terrified what will happen to the country, if ever they came back to power. These people are W times more dangerous than the times when W was the president.

The (Republicans, Conservatives, Southern Racists, etc.) know that Obamacare is going to pass and that will make President Obama one the biggest Presidents in history because the term "Obamacare" will stick and Americans will forever associate him with there loved one's healthcare.

What I've long noticed about Luntz is he sees nothign wrong with what he does. It seems to me that when he talks to a liberal audience, he tells the truth about political strategy. That strategy, however, can include lies. So he's not saying the things he tells Republicans to say are true, but that those lies will work. He tells the truth about what lies should be told.
I'm actually glad he's not on our side, because he might talk Democrats into telling ridiculous lies and we'd be where the Republicans are right now.

Chunky Red is trying to craft reality with his words, instead of reporting on things as they are. I guess you have to do what you can to buck up your gang when they down.

I really like this TPM feature, with its brilliantly simple formula: throw em a bone, sit back and read the repetitive whining and bitching. Works without fail (although a smallish group of whiners is clearly setting the tone).
Perhaps TPM Whine-Fest is a better name for it than TPMDC. And it's way more consistent than the Cafe; you do find occasional piece of serious thinking there.

I don't really care if it's real or fake, because I've used a few "fake" techniques myself over the years, but does Luntz REALLY look in the mirror in the morning and say, "Yes, my hair looks good today"?
