Senate hopeful Linda McMahon (R-CT) has bought airtime for a statewide campaign ad Friday aimed to compete with President Obama's fundraiser for Sen. Chris Dodd.
Dodd (D-CT) and Obama are doing a $1,000 per plate fundraiser as part of the president's political push this week.
McMahon, a billionaire who is the former CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment, will speak to the camera for the 30-second ad. It will run throughout the state and also reach into the New York media market.
Campaign spokesman Ed Patru said:
"Chris Dodd has spent a career chasing special interest cash and looking out for their interests. He was asleep at the switch while the banking system crashed, then he rewarded his special interest friends in the financial industry with taxpayer-funded bonuses. He's created a mess and it's time for him to go. It's important for Connecticut voters to know that just as another 6,600 people in the state have lost their jobs, and the state's unemployment rate hits a 33-year high, Chris Dodd is calling in every last political favor he's built up over 30 years as a career politician, and scrounging for every last special interest dollar in an attempt to save his job. Linda will remind Connecticut's families of that Friday."
McMahon is one in a crowded field of Republicans hoping to unseat Dodd next fall, and we posted last week about the Connecticut Democrats going after her WWE ties.

I'd just like to say how pleased I am that Connecticut is finally going to be the target of a bunch of stupid political ads. We get neglected around here, usually, during election season.
But I still don't get why McMahon is targeting Dodd, or why the geniuses of the Connecticut Democratic Party thought McMahon should be a target. . .

I think McMahon targeted Dodd to raise her profile as a legitimate contender, and Dodd and the dems fired back because they'd gladly face Linda McMahon in the general. So if they can help her get there, then they'll do it.

Lost jobs? Perhaps Linda could talk about the staff cuts, both employee, temp and contractor, that the WWE has done in the past in this regards?
Employees
As of February 2009 we had 564 employees. This headcount excludes our Superstars, who are independent contractors. In January 2009, WWE announced that it was reducing approximately 10% of its staff across all areas of its global operations. Our in-house production staff is supplemented with contract personnel for our television production. We believe that our relationships with our employees are generally satisfactory. None of our employees are represented by a union.
-World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc. Form 10-K filed 3/2/2009
Hmmm... 10%? And that's just "employees". The WWE uses a lot of contractors. We won't even talk about the death of their various developmental operations which fell outside the "employee" definition.
This at a time when the WWE is paying out fat dividends that are largely going into Vince and Linda's pockets rather than paying them big, fat salaries.
