NYT: Behind The White House Vs. Fox News Fight
The New York Times reports on the White House-Fox News feud, and how it followed an unsuccessful attempt by senior adviser David Axelrod and Fox head Roger Ailes to work out their problems. "We simply decided to stop abiding by the fiction, which is aided and abetted by the mainstream press, that Fox is a traditional news organization," said deputy White House communications director Dan Pfeiffer.

Czech Republic 'Ready To Participate' In New Missile Defense Plan
Czech Prime Minister Jan Fischer met with Vice President Biden today in Prague, and announced that his country is "ready to participate" in the Obama administration's revised missile defense plan. Obama had announced plans weeks ago to scale back a missile defense plan that the Bush administration had negotiated in Eastern Europe, as part of an outreach to Russia for greater cooperation.
Senate Passes Defense Authorization Bill, With Hate-Crimes Law, Over GOP Opposition
The Senate passed a $680 billion defense authorization bill yesterday by a 68-29 margin. A majority of Republicans voted against it, due to the attachment of a hate-crimes bill extending federal protections to gays.
Kerry Has Growing Prominence In Foreign Policy
The Washington Post reports that Sen. John Kerry (D-MA), in his new role as chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, has emerged as an active voice on foreign policy, including his recent work to mediate the Afghan election conflict -- and that the former Democratic presidential nominee is even winning praise from Republicans. "It's something that he's invested years and years into," said Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN). "I'd much rather have a chairman that wants to be fully engaged in the issues the committee is dealing with. . . . I think he's doing a fine job."
Poll: Americans Think Recession Still Not Over
A new ABC/Washington Post poll finds that most Americans still do not think the recession is over. Despite many economists saying that the recession is technically past, 82% of Americans say it is still going on, with only 16% agreeing with the economists.
Japanese Foreign Minister: U.S. Base Should Stay In Okinawa
Japanese Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada said today that moving an American military base out of Okinawa "is not an option," though it should be in a less populated area. "Starting from scratch on other ideas would not serve the best interests of the people of Okinawa," said Okada, who is working to resolve differences with Washington over a base realignment plan that was negotiated between the Bush administration and the conservative predecessors of the new Japanese government.

The calculation of whether to campaign for someone is interesting.
Obama for Deeds and Corzine. Kinda has to and looks like Corzine might pull it out.
Palin for Hoffman. Seems dumb - Hoffman is going to lose and she already had the extreme wingnut wing of the wingnuts wrapped up... Not sure what she has to gain.

Absolutely! And, using Fox's own tactic, the White House gets the mainstream media to report on it.
Of course, I doubt we're going to see Harry Smith tease us in the morning with "Coming up next: Is Fox News really a news network, or is the White House right about it just being the propaganda arm of the Republican party?"

Love the rationale about Fox
Maddow exposed their continuing to be 'unfair and unbalanced' and completely disingenuous about being called out by the White House.
Rove was in charge while Bush shut out liberal media and specific reporters he did not like for their reporting. And yet he was on Fox recently saying that such things 'should never happen.' Well Rover is the perfect example of how psychotic and unhinged Fox is. And this morning they are talking about making the founder of Fox a candidate for president?! Did I wake up in some alternate universe... no, that's just how demented the republican party has become.

There are plenty of people out there exposing Fox News for what it is. I just don't appreciate the strategy here. Fox News is the highest rated cable "news" network. This will only help them.
There is no way...NO WAY...the White House will be able to marginalize Fox. It just can't happen. No one has been able to marginalize Rush Limbaugh, have they? Fox can spend 24 hours attacking the President but the White House can't afford to spend that kind of energy when there are, dare I say, MORE IMPORTANT things for them to focus on?
Thus, knowing that nothing will become of this, we must conclude this is a cynical ploy to rally a base that has become angry at the President for screwing up Health Care reform (among other things).
Kinda like when Karl Rove rallied the troops by running all those anti-gay State referendums in 2004.
Think logically, folks, instead of knee-jerk cheering Fox getting bashed. We're being played.

Nice concern trolling.
One reason Fox (and Limbaugh) have got to the position they have is that, on the top level, Dems have gone along with the fiction that Fox is something other than a political advocacy organization.
I doubt the White House has spent any large amount of time on this; they are just recognizing the reality of their situation.
BTW, Fox may be large for a cable news operation, but in the larger scheme of things it's not a big player; their overall viewership is in the lower single digits, and the viewers it has are for the most part adamant Republicans anyway. By reinforcing the most unhinged wingnuttery, I think they are harming the GOP more than the Dems.

It's not about trying to hurt their ratings. It's about being able to ignore them. "Oh that's something Fox is 'reporting'? That's not worthy of a response. They're just talk radio".

If they have to do these idiotic polls, they at least should see what percent of Americans actually know what the technical definition of "recession" is. I'd be surprised if it was over 1%.

Not sure that the technical definition of a recession is important to anyone other than academic economists. To most people, recession = crappy economic times. And we are definitely still in crappy economic times.

That's kind of my point. I just think it's stupid to compare the general public's feeling about the state of the economy with a technical term that is quantifiable; then report it as the public not "agreeing with the economists". If I was asked that question my response would be "I don't know, what do the economists say?".

How popular is Rush Limbaugh? I don't mean how big is his audience relative to other talk radio show hosts. What are his approval/disapproval ratings with the American public? The White House treats Limbaugh as the de facto head of the Republican party and the Republican party is at its lowest in decades. Independents are peeling off of the GOP in droves, because of its extremism.
I think the people who are criticizing this move should decide which way they want to go on this. On the one hand, I hear people saying "Don't punch down," as if Fox news is a 90 lb. weakling. No, they're huge. But, there's nothing to be gained from pretending that they're not working for the GOP, which they are, and letting them continue to say anything they want to all of their viewers unchallenged.
There are probably a lot of people who don't watch Fox and have no idea how much bullshit it disseminates daily. This gets it out in the mainstream where those people will be aware of it. The more Fox does and says in retaliation, the more opportunities there are for Gibbs to point out to the press gaggle just exactly what they're lying about today. And, as a bonus, the White House's progressive creds, which are pretty shaky right now, get a polishing.

Fox and Limbaugh have assumed the role they ridicule: VICTIM.
WAAAAAAAAAAA! Mean old Barack is making fun of me! WAAAAAA!
This is not, as the MSM has breathlessly tagged it, a WAR between the WH and the rightwing hatemongers. This is simply the WH pointing to the simple truth that Emperor Murdoch is naked.
Move along, folks. Nothing to see here.

Fox is not an arm of the RNC, but the other way around.
Its entire focus, like the lobbyist industries that support them, is to convince Republicans that they are popular, and that people hate, for example, the public option. The tea parties were built up to Mau-Mau (as we used to call it) Republican congressmen. It had NOTHING to do with public opinion, which drove in the opposite direction after all their shenanigans.
The fact that the Republicans are ignoring actual public opinion and believing in the unreality Fox sells them tells the whole story.
