Obama Blasts Insurance Industry's 'Phony Studies'
In this weekend's YouTube address, President Obama denounced the insurance industry for producing its own commissioned studies against health care reform:

"It's smoke and mirrors. It's bogus. And it's all too familiar. Every time we get close to passing reform, the insurance companies produce these phony studies as a prescription and say, 'Take one of these, and call us in a decade.' Well, not this time," said Obama. "The fact is, the insurance industry is making this last-ditch effort to stop reform even as costs continue to rise and our health care dollars continue to be poured into their profits, bonuses, and administrative costs that do nothing to make us healthy - that often actually go toward figuring out how to avoid covering people."

GOP Address: American Public 'Isn't Buying' Dem Policies
In this weekend's Republican address, Rep. Kevin Brady (R-TX) attacked the Democrats on the issues of jobs, health care and the budget:

"There are three big myths hurtling around Washington these days: no jobs equals an economic recovery, government-run health care will make it more affordable, and deficits don't matter," said Brady. "The American public - to their credit - isn't buying any of these."

No Obama or Biden Events This Weekend
President Obama is spending the weekend in Washington, while Vice President Biden is in Delaware. They do not have any public events scheduled.

Budget Deficit Hits Record $1.4 Trillion
The federal budget deficit for the just-completed fiscal 2009 officially reached a record $1.4 trillion, equal to 10 percent of America's GDP. The economic stimulus and financial bailouts accounted for a large portion of the deficit, with outlays from the Treasury exceeding even the spending by the Department of Defense.

WaPo: Administration To Roll Out New Sudan Policy
The Washington Post reports that the Obama administration is set to roll out a new Sudan policy: "The new U.S. policy, which will be formally unveiled Monday, calls for a campaign of 'pressure and incentives' to cajole the government in Khartoum into pursuing peace in the troubled Darfur region, settling disputes with the autonomous government in southern Sudan and providing the United States greater cooperation in stemming international terrorism, according to administration officials briefed on the plan. It also provides Khartoum with a path to improved relations with the United States if it begins to address long-standing U.S. concerns."

NYT Looks At Blumenauer And the 'Frustrated Left'
The New York Times profiles Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-OR), a progressive Democrat who has had to deal with some level of frustration at the slowness of political change under the Obama administration. "The combination of the economic shock and frankly the political upset and outrage has changed the landscape," said Blumenauer. "The Barack Obama that I campaigned with is pretty much the same guy. But it is an environment that is unprecedented and would press anyone's skills."

Obama To Raise Money For Dems This Week
President Obama will be raising money for Democrats this coming week. On Tuesday, he will raise money in New York for the Democratic National Committee, as well as for NY-23 special election candidate Bill Owens. On Friday, he will be attending an event in Boston for Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, and another event in Stamford, CT, for Sen. Chris Dodd.

Obama 'Hope' Poster Creator: I Used AP Photo, Submitted False Evidence In Litigation
Shepard Fairey, the creator of the iconic Obama "Hope" poster, has admitted that he used a particular Associated Press photo as his source, and not another AP photo that he'd claimed in a countersuit against the AP's copyright litigation. "In an attempt to conceal my mistake, I submitted false images and deleted other images," said Fairey. "I sincerely apologize for my lapse in judgment, and I take full responsibility for my actions, which were mine alone."

And they're earning these profits and bonuses while enjoying a privileged exception from our anti-trust laws, a matter that Congress is rightfully reviewing.

The HCAN commercial - "only 2 businesses enjoy an exemption from the anti-trust laws. Baseball players thrive on competition...."

Considering Obama's record of non-transparency and unfulfilled promises, I'd believe the insurance companies long before I'd believe Obama. Sad but true. Meanwhile here's a cautionary tale from the UK...

Considering that Obama's been in office 9 months and the insurance industry has been screwing the American people for decades - with testimonials, studies and the bodies to prove it, I have to believe you are a complete idiot.

Yes, and our corporate masters are so absolutely famous for their honesty and their complete openness. I mean, they so obviously care for us as individuals. They can be trusted completely and without question. They would never take advantage of any of us, and they invariably bend over backwards to be fair, even if it's not obvious to the rest of us. There is NO corporate secrecy and they work so very hard to make sure that everyone connected to their products are fully informed about the effects and side-effects of the products.

And their promises?? Always fulfilled. Ask anyone who every bought insurance or used cars.

Then there's the utter absence of corruption in private industry. Have you EVER heard of a corrupt member of an insurance company? Enough said.

Private non-government businesses are so perfect that the media simply never bothers to report on them. See?

This contrasts with the government from whom we can expect all kinds of perfidy and errors, so that the media focuses heavily on them as the most likely source of problems. (Besides, the government won't use lawyers to attack the media who report on them the way the corporate masters do.)

It's just so very clear why we should trust private industry rather than government, isn't it?

      well, isn't it?

I'd believe the insurance companies long before I'd believe Obama.

And I'd believe the tooth fairly long before I'd believe you.

I am sure you want to rile us with your wit?! You know darn well a President cannot do much of anything without the Senate and Congress.

After pillorying AHIP on Friday, Krugman goes wild

AHIP, AHIP, hooray!

President Obama...
I almost wonder whether Karen Ignani is a progressive mole; that AHIP study has turned out to be extremely helpful to the other side.

He's also predicting 4% GDP growth in the near future because industrial production is rising fast

HCAN is joining California OFA's Call Congress Campaign...

Dear John McCutchen,

***UPCOMING HEALTH REFORM ACTION!***

Big things are happening in Congress over the next few weeks, including the upcoming merger of the proposed health reform bills in the Senate. After many months of negotiation and a summer of lively debate, health reform bills have now passed all 5 committees in Congress responsible for health care reform.

That's why it's critical that we keep the pressure on ALL our Members of Congress, especially Senators Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer, to remind them to stand firm in support for real, meaningful health reform that the people of California so desperately need.

In response, HCAN-CA and our statewide partners are hosting several events across the state next week to send a strong message to Congress:

"IT'S TIME TO DELIVER!"

Five people die every hour because they don't have access to quality, affordable health care. This insufferable and deplorable reality, demonstrable of a broken health care system, is aggravated by a monopolistic private health insurance industry that continues to deny us coverage while simultaneously spending billions of dollars to lobby against real, meaningful reform.

That's why hundreds of activists and volunteers (just like you!) will be joining together in a concerted effort to call on California's Senators Feinstein and Boxer, urging them to fight to make sure key provisions from the Kennedy HELP Bill are included in the final Health Reform bill before it's presented to the Senate floor. ...

What I reject is when some folks say we should go back to the past policies when it was those very same policies that got us into this mess in the first place. Another way of putting it is when, you know, I'm busy and Nancy is busy with our mop cleaning up somebody else's mess --- we don't want somebody sitting back saying, you're not holding the mop the right way. Why don't you grab a mop, why don't you help clean up. (Applause.) You're not mopping fast enough. (Laughter.) That's a socialist mop. (Laughter and applause.) Grab a mop -- let's get to work," - Barack Obama.

Here's hoping the "grab a mop" meme gains some ground. It's excellent.
