President Obama before dawn this morning paid tribute to the 18 U.S. military personnel killed in Afghanistan Monday, making a surprise trip to Dover Air Force Base as their bodies returned home to the United States.

The solemn visit - Obama's first such experience since taking office and lifting the ban on photographing the war dead - comes as he's wrestling with a decision to send up to 40,000 more troops to Afghanistan.

(See slideshow here.)

The White House pool was summoned just before midnight to witness the moment. TPMDC has the details.

Obama was joined by White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs, travel director Marvin Nicholson and Denis McDonough of his national security team, all close friends.

The White House said the group with Obama at Dover included U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz, DEA Acting Administrator Michele Leonhart, U.S. Army Assistant Judge Advocate Maj Gen Daniel Wright, U.S. Army Special Forces Commander Brig. Gen. Michael Repass, and Air Force Mortuary Affairs Operations Center Col. Robert Edmondson, who will serve as the Dignified Transfer Host Officer.

Obama went into the chapel at Dover to meet with the families of the fallen before participating in a 15-minute traditional ceremony known as a transfer. The pool reporter was told that during the transfer, Air Force Chaplain, Maj. Richard S. Bach, would offer a prayer.

From the pool reports tonight:

At 3:40 am, POTUS marched out of a base building with other members of the official party. Ahead of them was the six-person carry team, wearing white gloves. POTUS group walked maybe 250 yards across the tarmac to the C-17, and they followed the team up the back ramp onto the plane. A minute later, POTUS' group marched off and stood at attention in a single file near the ramp, facing the carry team's path. Nearly ten minutes later a small bus with family members of Sgt. Dale Griffin pulled up. As the team carried the flag draped case off the plane, POTUS and the party saluted, holding the position until the case was placed on the white mortuary van, which was parked nearby. They saluted again as the van slowly drove away.
The fallen consist of 7 U.S. Army soldiers and 3 Drug Enforcement Agency agents killed when their MH-47 Chinook crashed at Darreh-ye-bum, and 8 U.S. soldiers killed when their STRYKER personnel vehicle was struck by an IED blast in the Arghandab River Valley. Both incidents occurred on October 26, the military said. The deaths contributed to the deadliest month for the U.S. in Afghanistan. Remains were to carried by a team of military personnel from the fallen member's respective service to the Air Force Mortuary Operations Center facility.

Obama was back at the White House alone at 4:45 a.m.

For those who question Obama's integrity, the picture I saw on MSNBC of the President rendering a salute was professional - standing straight, head up, eyes straight ahead, the hand and forearm straight(not bent),thumb inline with the hand(not sticking out) and the arm at a 45 degree angle off the outer edge of the right eyebrow. Shows he took the time to learn the proper way to present a salute. The officer standing next to him should take note - his was sloppy!

Good post. I certainly don't question his integrity and that is why I refuse to bash him on a daily basis like some here who do. I may not agree with everything he does, but I know he is trying his best in a very difficult situation. My goodness, the problems he has are staggering and still in a short time he has managed to do so much and gets so little credit.

Ashau Valley: horror begot horror. Helmland Valley: horror begets horror. Why did he allow the film crews to record his witness? Wasn't/Isn't it enough for us to simply know that he was there?

But no. Has this been an unintentional 'Mission Accomplished' moment for all of the victims?

What will the wingnut spin be? He's politicizing dead troops? He's never served so he shouldn't salute? What nonsense will they generate?

Well let's see... he invited the press along, which proves it was just a photo op. He's using dead troops as a photo op prop (something W never did! That's why he didn't go!). He never served so he has no right. He wore a blue tie which is a grave breach of decorum.

The WH press corps would have thrown a huge hissy fit if the WH press pool had not been informed of this activity and allowed to cover it.

I suppose there are those who long for the Republican policy of sneaking the military casualties home in the dead of night, but the press is not in that throng. FOX News, yes, but not the press.

If you look at the sequence of six images which TPM just posted, in the 3rd or 4th one Obama is not looking at the casket as it passes him! He just stares straight ahead! See? He HAS NO RESPECT FOR THE TROOPS! THIS PROVES HE IS A KENYAN, NOT A 'NATURAL-BORN' AMERICAN CITIZEN! IMPEACH!

First, He has every right to salute and be saluted as COMMANDER IN CHEIF.

That said, he is also a Civilian leader so... He has no Uniform to wear nor "Decorum" to follow. He did take the time to learn to salute properly out of respect, which, again as a civilian, he has no obligation to do.

As far as the Press... as its been said, they would have had a sh*t if they weren't invited/allowed. Secondly, it's good for all of those in the military to see that the Commander in Cheif sees what the sacrifice they are making first hand, especially after the tough month they have been having regarding casualties.

Get off you republican BS high horse and realize that your(and your ilks) inability to see through your(their) partisan haze is what is killing the republican party.

Those are good for openers.

Others would be that he thinks he can gain legitimacy by putting on a smart-alecky suit in middle of night he's dreaming, and also that as a community-organizing anarchical fascistic communist Indonesian Islamo-atheistic illegal alien (i.e, he's black), he has somehow disgraced the uniform and thereby insulted all our troops who serve proudly (Limbaugh the bigot). Also that he just looked ridiculous ("Just look at him standing there! Look at him! LOOK AT HIM!"), this will be another Limbaugh appeal to ignorance and bigotry.

Of course, we won't have the official party line until Boss Limbaugh and Beck have spoken, but could someone with a stronger stomach that me go over to Malkin's sewer and Freep and get the early returns? I know it's like asking someone else to clean up after the dog after he feasted on ripe roadkill, but, I'd like to know. (Though not enough to do it myself.)

Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if Malkin's questioning whether there are really bodies in the containers and calling on her minions to stalk the alleged grieving families.

Like his wonderful, saintly mother Barbara, W didn't want to trouble his beautiful mind with thoughts of the war dead for which he is directly responsible. Makes it hard to focus on the job of presidenting and commander-in-chiefing if you have to think about these unpleasant annoyances, you know.

He WILL send more troops; the question is, what is the goal? It can't be to secure the entire country, that will not happen unless we send a half-million troops. I think the idea is to set a goal which has real, meaningful effect as well as being a goal which is achievable.

The last thing Obama wants is to escalate Afghanistan only to have it be as bad or worse of a mess a year from now, right before the 2010 midterms.

The critics on the right going on about Obama 'dithering' need to STFU; winter is about to descend upon Afghanistan and it takes six months to get the troops in the field. Obama has a window of up to two more weeks to make his decision and he is likely waiting until after the Afghanistan election (part deux) to announce his decision.

This is what it looks like when a president makes intelligent decisions. Right-wingers just aren't used to that, they've had 8 years of going with your gut.

I am certain Obama - who never served - understands it much better than W ever did. For one, W was either born or bred (or both) a sociopath, lacking any empathy whatsoever for his fellow human being.

For instance, I find it impossible to imagine Obama cruelly mocking a condemned inmate pleading for her life, like W cruelly mocked Karla Faye Tucker such that he shocked even that asshole-frat-boy-who-never-grew-up Tucker Carlson.

Here's a thought-provoking letter from almost two years ago, which I just chanced upon.

A Russian veteran of the Soviet incursion into Afghanistan, now living in Victoria BC, reflects upon the recent death of a Canadian soldier in Afghanistan.

http://www.vigile.net/We-re-still-dying-in-Afghanistan

This made me think of the old George Santayana quote: "Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it."

That's a very thoughtful letter; however I'll point out that there is a dramatic difference between Soviet occupation of Afghanistan and NATO's involvement there: the Soviets were BRUTAL. The Red Army, as a whole, has/had no sense of the value of life, even when it came to their own soldiers.

It was the Red Army's intentional policy to terrorize the Afghanis. I do not believe for a moment that it is official NATO/US policy to randomly murder Afghani men and rape their women.

I certainly haven't heard any stories about air-drops of booby-trapped toys by the U.S.

It sounds like one of those "Belgian babies spitted on bayonet" propaganda lies but, yeah, they really did it. I can't for the life of me imagine what the bastards thought they were going to accomplish with that vicious little atrocity within an atrocity.

You got it right Beetlejuice: salute was perfect but officer next to Pres needs to work on his. In Vietnam when you see soldiers being brought into a medical triage you get "it" and never forget "it". The Pres did good and hopefully the middle of the night reality, while everyone else is sleeping, the gritty you-can't-turn-away reality of caskets hits hard. Bring 'em home Mr President.

You think he just up and decided to do this because he hadn't yet internalized the losses and wanted to try? You think someone forced him to do it in an effort to make that happen?

The man has to read and sign the condolence letters every day, make the calls to the families, read their letters to him.

Whatever he does in Afghanistan, it's not going to be done, or not done, because he doesn't understand the price.

I don't know about Obama internalizing, but personally it compelled to think more profoundly about those who sacrifice their lives, something I tend not to do on a regular basis.
