President Obama last night spent about an hour with leaders of several key Democratic caucuses talking about health care.

TPMDC waited to talk to members as they left the evening meeting, but it got started late so leaders of the Progressive, Black, Hispanic and Asian Pacific American caucuses hurried out instead of speaking to reporters.

A senior administration official tells us this morning:

It was a productive meeting that lasted for about an hour. The President congratulated the members on working so hard to get a meaningful reform bill put together in the House. They talked about strategies for ensuring choice and competition, expanding coverage, controlling costs, ensuring that minority health is addressed, and discussed the road forward.

Obama finally realized that there is enough opposition to his plans to gut health care reform in the interest of conciliation that he had to talk to the people who want to do it right. He couldn't schmooze the Dogs into good behavior, let's see if he can schmooze the Progressives into bad behavior!

ajm- excellent point. (big pharma) obama has not shown a lick of leadership when it comes to putting a healthcare bill together that creates real competition. i am not a diehard public option person but i do believe in the wyden approach to healthcare reform - you need competition from all avenues to truly drive down health cost. i would have loved raising the medicaid entry point to $50K, reforming medical documentation, eliminating pre-existing conditions and allowing everyone to purchase their insurance from an exchange (including employees of a corporation)and call it a day.

the current bill is just buying insurance for more people and intruding into my life - meaning taxing and fining me

Here's a better idea that combines the current house bill with H.R 676 (Medicare for all). Allow parents to have their kids on their insurance until they are 27. And, then let Medicare kick in when the kid turns 28. Problem solved, LOL.

The meeting must have been a very bad one for nobody to comment other than an official White House statement. Obama is screwing the progressives once again. Change? Not so much it turns out.
