The two remaining candidates in the NY-23 special election, Democrat Bill Owens and Conservative Doug Hoffman, have now each reacted to moderate Republican Dede Scozzafava dropping out of the race.
Owens gave a conciliatory note, praising Scozzafava's public service and denouncing Hoffman as a right-wing extremist, a clear play for Scozzafava's voters:
"Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava has been an honorable public servant for years now and I have a tremendous amount of respect for her and her commitment to her principles. While we disagree on certain issues, we share a dedication to serving the best interests of Upstate New York and the Obama administration's efforts to get our economy back on track. Those interests will always be my highest priority."
"I remain focused on my campaign. Over the next 4 days I will continue traveling the district to discuss my record of helping create jobs and my plans to continue that work in Congress."
"Voters have a clear choice on Tuesday: they can elect to go back to the George Bush economic agenda, or they can vote to move forward. Doug Hoffman and the Club for Growth's extremist agenda won't do a thing to get our economy moving again. While Doug Hoffman is solely committed to continuing tax cuts for the wealthy which will add $500 billion to the deficit, protecting tax breaks for companies who ship jobs overseas, and privatizing Social Security, I will fight to turn the page on that agenda. I will work to create jobs Upstate to get our economy back on track because that is the type of leadership we need right now in Congress."
Hoffman's statement says this race is a fight against Nancy Pelosi, the Working Families Party, ACORN and other such villains, a reminder to Republican voters of which side they ought to be on:
This morning's events prove what we have said for the last week; this campaign is a horserace between me and Nancy Pelosi's handpicked candidate, Bill Owens. At this moment, the Democratic Party, the Working Families Party, ACORN, Big Labor and pro-abortion groups are flooding the district with troops and they are flooding the airwaves with a million dollars worth of negative ads. They are throwing mud; they are trying to stop me.
It's time for us to send a message to Washington--we're sick and tired of big-spending, high-taxing, career politicians and by voting for me on Tuesday you will send that message loud and clear.

Ya gotta love the 3d and 4th party system in NY. Washington Independent reports an Owens endorsement from the Independence Party which they claim is a real player

As I expected, only one of them showed any class.
I understand from various news reports that Hoffman has yet to actually venture an opinion on any issues that actually affect the NY-23rd district. He's just a right-wing radical that keeps parrotting the Club for Growth Mantra regarding taxes.

Yes, that is the problem with the uber-Neos. Their entire campaign style is typically fact-free and all dog-whistle politics. I mean, for certain, there is a TON of communicating going on up there in the ultra-frequencies that only the purist authoritarian followers can hear.
That's why the push is on to "purify" their ranks over there in Neo-Rethug Land. They only want minions that are shock troops who graduated from their purist ideology boot camps. When the real campaign battles begin for 2010 and 2012, they want to be able to use this dog-whistle battle language to get their messages through to followers and, if you aren't schooled in that language (of course, meaning you don't belong) that communication won't seem to make a lot of sense (or appear to show any "class").
But, then, "class" isn't what it's about to those folks. They really, honestly, truly see this as war.
(BTW: I am the product of a fundamentalist protestant family; I am absolutely surrounded by these speakers-in-tongues; the things I assert here are the things I see around me, and the fruit borne of our many arguments.)
Their many un-classy statements and pronouncements appear to have one set of meanings at the surface, but carry a rich alternative set of meanings up there in the dog-whistle frequencies. The successful authoritarian manipulators are successful because they know how to hit just the right notes that resonate with the shock troops, and those resonances are at an emotional, visceral level. When they hear it, these shock troops know just what to do.
They will ALL be out there at the polls — whether it's this Tuesday or the Tuesdays of 2010 and 2012. Any moderates, independents (of any party stripe) and Democrats can only dismiss the apparent disarray, their apparent small numbers, get lazy, or apply retribution to underperforming Democratic leaders at our collective peril.
Because this uber-Right-wing core taking the reigns do see this as a very un-civil war, and anybody who does not agree with their narrow ideologies are in the cross-hairs.
We HAVE to take the advantage they are handing us, not take it for granted. Our current leadership is flawed, but it's still a zillion times better than if we become complacent and allow this newly purified version of Rethuglican back in the doors to power and control.

Owens needs to point out all the attack ads Hoffman ran against Scozzafava, and how Hoffman himself said that there wasn't much difference between Scozzafava and Owens.
Owens needs to make this election about the interests of NY-23 and not some meta statement to Washington. Hoffman doesn't live in the district and didn't know any of the issues important to the district.
NY-23 voted 65%-35% for McHugh over the dem challenger each of the last two elections. So it could be said that that number is the district political breakdown. If Owens loses but could get 45% of the vote, wouldn't that show that Hoffman lost popular support?

Yes, but Hoffman is not McHugh. The more telling statistics are that Obama won this district 52-47%, and that most of Scozzafava's supporters in the Siena have a favorable view of Obama (H/T Nate Silver at http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/2009/10/scozzafavas-supporters-like-obama.html). Owens should be able to pick up the Scozzafava supporters. Biden could help, but an Obama trip could be the clincher.

At the risk of sounding really stupid (hey, too late!) I just have to express my surprise and dismay over a tiny little detail:
He...doesn't...even...live...there?
How does it make sense for someone to run for local office when they don't live in the district? Isn't that like voting for a president who doesn't live in the U.S.? Does this happen a lot? (Forgive my ignorance, I'm new.)

Hoffman's statement is a perfect demonstration of why Newt Gringrich endorsed Scozzafava instead of him. Newt may be a conservative, but he's also a Machiavellian who plays to win. Hoffman is still angling for the 28%ers who are already on his side. It's not going to fly in the broader electorate of upstate New York, and the tone of it is going to piss off a lot of moderate Republicans who were supporting Scozzafava.

If I were a Republican, I would hope for the sake of the Republican party's long term electoral prospects that Owens wins.
It would teach the right-wing ideologue segment of the party that dispatching right-wing idealogues to be carpetbaggers in congressional districts isn't going to get them back in power. If Hoffman wins, it will embolden them to continue the witch-hunt against moderates. While that may work in conservative districts like this one, it lacks broader appeal. And that would prevent my party from getting back in power.
But I'm not a Republican. I hope Owens wins, though. Not because it would teach any important strategic lessons to the current GOP, but because I think Representatives in Congress should know even relatively simple questions about the local issues of the communities that elect them.

This is EXCELLENT NEWS!!! A right wing extremist with absolutely NO grasp of the issues that affect NY-23 knocks out an obviously MORE qualified, moderate Republican.
We can only hope this emboldens MORE Conservative Party candidates to run for office.
The farther right the Republicans and Conservatives trend, the less their ability to construct another majority becomes.
I like it.
Even if Owens does not win, this is still great news.

I kind of agree.
All the Republican party needs right now is to learn the lesson that they need to go MORE right... and they'll take themselves straight to irrelevancy.
And if Hoffman wins, Palin's odds just get better.

I have never heard Hoffman say anything that wasn't same ol' same ol' ...
Now this is being spun as a Vote for Hoffman is a Vote for Palin!
Is it such a tough choice? We will be watching, NY23 to see if a tide is turning or a tsunami is averted!

Nah, the Terror of Teaneck knew plenty before I had him in class. I'm the one that gets to brag on him as a University of Wisconsin success story.
My second post on the Siena poll is now up at Pollster: http://bit.ly/4k3E68

I love this race. Honestly, it will be devastating for Republicans if Hoffman wins. They will field similarly conservative candidates in districts where they have little if any chance of winning. If Hoffman loses, it won't kill the conservative takeover of the Republican Party but it will keep the fight going.
