The new Rasmussen poll of the New Jersey gubernatorial race finds Republican Chris Christie with some possible momentum against Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine and independent Chris Daggett in the home stretch of the campaign.

As was done last week, respondents were initially asked for first preferences between Democrat Jon Corzine, Republican Christ Christie, and independent Chris Daggett. Those who answered Daggett were then given a follow-up question of whether they were sure -- an attempt to measure the usual drop-off that third-party candidates have -- and their possible new votes were then distributed, along with undecided voters who were pushed into supporting a candidate.

The initial preferences were Christie 42%, Corzine 38%, and Daggett 14%. After Daggett-supporters and undecideds were pushed, it became Christie 46%, Corzine 43%, and Daggett 7%. Last week, Corzine had led by 37%-36%-16% on first preferences, and Christie was up by 41%-39%-11% after people were pushed. The margin of error is ±3%.

The thing that puzzles me is how to reconcile the fact the the Republican Party has become the party of the fringe right wing, with the fact that they are ahead in the polls in the governorship races in NJ and VA. I wonder if we on the left have underestimated Republican strength and the appeal of the modern-day know-nothing party.

Or it could have something to do with the fact the Dems have two terrible candidates in these races, plus an awful economy and mass corruption in NJ, and the fact Virginia is a purple state. Neither GOP candidate has made their campaign a referendum on national politics. Don't forget that Christie has praised Obama and incorporated his rhetoric into his advertizing.

Remember, this is a Rasmussen poll, thus it is inherently biased in favor of Republicans!

No kidding...

Just look at all the Polling regarding Presidential Approval, Only Fox and Rasmussen have Obama in the negative. Every other has Obama between +8 to +15%.

As we have learned w/ the PO polling its all how you answer the question. Rasmussen's polling is simply intended to creat Pro-GOP headlines.

I expect Fox to buy and sell Rasmussen's BS, but TPM, I would expect at least a Disclaimer about their clear Bias. We've certainly had dicussions of Fox "News" bias, why not these yahoo's?

Eric are you there? What gives? I'm sure this bias hasn't escaped you.
