Despite political setbacks and a determined Democratic opposition, a new poll shows Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) leads his rival ahead of his 2010 reelection.
The Times-Picayune has the details, and shows Vitter enjoys a 48-36 percent lead over Rep. Charlie Melancon (D-LA).
Key bit:
Vitter had 47.6 percent to Melancon's 35.8 percent, with 16.6 percent undecided, according to the survey conducted last week by Southern Media and Opinion Research of Baton Rouge. The poll was conducted for Baton Rouge businessman Lane Grigsby, who has contributed mainly to Republicans in the past, including Vitter. The survey is based on telephone interviews with 600 likely voters and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
Vitter's office still hasn't returned our calls about his census amendment and the justice of the peace who refuses to marry biracial couples. We'll keep you posted.

Um:

Why is a "Baton Rouge businessman" conducting a poll on a Senate race?

agreed, it's kind of weird. Can the poll even be trusted?
Also, this is somewhat meaningless until the Vitter prostitution ads start playing. Then we'll know if his support is sound or fleeting.

It is way past time to admit that some of these "United States" are just cesspools of uneducated rednecks and not really up to the task of electing qualified Senators. I am so sick and tired of the big Blue States sending these backwater swamps our billions and billions of hard earned dollars to just to be pissed away propping up a base for these republican neanderthal assholes. Vitter is just another southern corporate con man who votes against every damned thing that would help average Louisianans improve their lives. Why the hell they want him reelected so resolutely I have no idea.

OK...first things first. Frequenting prostitutes isn't necessarily viewed as a bad thing if you are a politician from Louisiana. The corruption shock value bar there is pretty high.
But I think the more important issue here is that Charlie Melancon is a Democrat. Even though he's probably to the right of Ben Nelson and the ladies from Maine, he still has a D next to his name...as does that colored boy in the White House. And that, my friends, is why Vitter is polling better than you'd think he would. Even though Melancon is a native son and a Cajun, a win by him would also be seen as a win for Obama...and we can't be having that now, can we? That boy needs to be put in his place. He's a perfect example of why we shouldn't allow biracial marriages...that mongrel is destroying out country.
Hard to believe that Louisiana, not so long ago, voted to put Bill Clinton in office..or that the plurality (and maybe majority) of voters in the state still consider themselves to be Democrats. Put a Negro in the White House and folks in Louisiana will have no problem voting for a guy who gets off wearing diapers while his whore plays mommy. Not that there's anything wrong with that...

At first read I was trying to read a pun into Melancon....I thought it was some combination of Melanin and Conservative given Vitter's lack of response to the Judge denying the multi-racial marriage....I didn't realize it was his competitor's names....D'oh!

Vitter's office won't return your calls? Get one of your female employees to call pretending to be Heidi Fleiss.
