President Obama will rally grassroots Organizing for America volunteers next week with the goal of making 100,000 calls to Congress in support of health care.

TPMDC has learned that while on political travel in New York Tuesday, Obama will join his most active supporters via Webcast into hundreds of "Time to Deliver" house parties arranged by OFA, the spinoff of his presidential campaign housed at the DNC.

The parties are easy, OFA explains: "If you can print out some call sheets and info about the president's plan - and make sure volunteers have a comfortable place to sit -- you can host a successful call party."

The president, who has relied on his campaign supporters to help pass legislation and during hearings for his Supreme Court nominee, will participate in the parties to pump everyone up for a final push.

A Democratic source told TPMDC that Obama will ask volunteers to call Congress to support health care and tell them, "It's up to you to close the deal." He'll also reprise the talking point from the last few days that it's historic and this is the farthest Congress has ever come in the health care fight.

The OFA signup page says Obama will "encourage" the partiers and thank them for what they've done so far.

On Sunday OFA asked its most active volunteers and supporters to host a call party, using this new graphic.

Here's Sunday's OFA email, which included a "donate" link:

After months of negotiations, the entire House and Senate will soon start debating the final plans for health insurance reform. You've called your representatives, but we can't stop there -- if the American people are going to drown out the D.C. lobbyists, we need everyone who supports reform to weigh in. So here's the plan:

On Tuesday, October 20th, OFA volunteers will gather at "Time to Deliver" Call Parties in living rooms like yours across the country. We'll call friendly voters whose voices matter in this debate, talk to them about the President's plan, and ask them to call on their representatives to support reform.

Our goal? 100,000 calls to Congress placed or committed to in a single day. It's an ambitious goal, but the stakes couldn't be higher -- and if we hit it, we cannot be ignored.

The whole plan begins by finding a place for OFA volunteers to gather -- in your area and across the country. And that's why I'm turning to you.

Can you host a Time to Deliver Call Party on Tuesday, October 20th?

Hosting a call party is surprisingly easy. No special experience required, and we'll provide simple step-by-step instructions. If you can print out some call sheets and info about the President's plan -- and make sure volunteers have a comfortable place to sit -- you can host a successful Call Party.

You can invite your friends, we'll invite other OFA supporters in your area, and together you'll have a great time while making a huge difference.

If we can get 100,000 calls to Congress placed or committed to on a single day it will set a new OFA record -- and really shake up the debate in Washington. But it won't be easy. Everything hinges on finding volunteer leaders like you who are willing to open your doors and give supporters in your area a place to gather.

Can we count on you? Please sign up to host a Time to Deliver Call Party on October 20th.

Thanks for making it happen,

Jeremy Bird
Deputy Director
Organizing for America

Late update: Tonight's OFA email tells volunteers the call parties "couldn't come at a more important time."

"The debate is about to move to the full Congress for the first time," Mitch Stewart says in the email. "And the insurance industry lobby is throwing everything they've got at us to distort the issues and derail progress. Our voices must be heard."

A snarky GOP aide writes in with an interesting point - given the size of the Obama email list (more than 13 million), doesn't 100,000 phone calls seem like a low goal?

The aide writes: "I'm not taking anything away from the prowess of their email distribution list, but what kind of message does it send when the vast majority of their most enthusiastic fans won't even bother to call their Congressman about their signature issue?"

You can also donate

Please send a message to Congress today:

The next few weeks are absolutely crucial to our success -- we'll be organizing events, running ads, and doing everything possible to make sure Congress passes real reform. But right now, the most important thing we can do is make our voices heard immediately. Please speak out now.

Thanks,

Mitch

OOPS...I don't think they're making calls to Pelosi, BoXer or Feinstein

This is the first part

John --

Despite increasingly desperate attacks from the insurance lobby, the Senate Finance Committee took the historic step of voting reform legislation out of committee with bipartisan support. They're the final committee to do so -- and the negotiations over the final bill will now move to the full House and Senate.

Soon, every senator and representative must decide where they stand. Lobbyists will be racing to each office, trying every trick in the book to derail the President's plan. In fact, just this week, the insurance lobby released a self-serving report falsely claiming that reform would increase costs. Journalists called it "deceptive" and said "something doesn't smell right here." A prominent M.I.T. economist described the study as "deeply flawed."

It's a blatant scare tactic designed to frighten voters and bully Congress -- and it's just the beginning. We need to speak out right away to show Congress that their constituents are watching closely, and we're counting on them to say "no" to the lobbyists and "yes" to reform.

Send a message urging Congress to stand with voters, not D.C. lobbyists, and pass real reform.

Send a message to Congress

It's becoming clear that the insurance companies will do whatever it takes to stop progress: The New York Times is reporting that special interests are spending $1.4 million every day to kill reform -- and even commissioned their own slanted analysis of the Finance Committee's legislation in an effort to defeat it. But today, after widespread criticism, the company that produced the report issued a statement saying that it analyzed only part of the bill because that's exactly what the insurance industry paid them to do!

And we just got word that insurance companies are spending $1 million on a misleading ad to scare seniors out of supporting reform. The ad falsely declares that reform will cause cuts in Medicare, even though reform is crucial to ensuring the long-term survival of the program and preserving the care that millions of seniors depend on.

Now that all five congressional committees have passed reform legislation, we're sure to see attacks that are even more extreme. It's up to us to make sure that ordinary Americans continue to be heard louder than the Washington lobbyists.

Uh oh...

Looks like they are trying to put pressure on Progressives to support the Baucus Bill.

Without a public option the bill will raise premiums for all us.

Support for health care???!!! I thought we were getting "insurance reform".

So what are we supposed to do? Call in support of Baucuscare? Is that the deal?

The last letter I got from OFA told me the bill was aimed at economic growth.

Well, I hope they send me another letter so I get another chance to send them my ranting response postage paid.

No Bluebell you don't understand. It isn't about phone calls it is all about the donate button. They want you to send the money and don't give a tinker's damn whether or not you make a phone call at all. I get all these e-mails and they're for suckers. It's about keeping the faithful whipped up enough to continue forking over the cash.

While I too had the knee jerk reaction to say "he better advocate for a Public Option on that call!", I realized something. He's advocating action. It's up to us, what we do with it.

If you want a public option - then on your calls advocate for it. And encourage others to do the same. That's what grassroots is about. You can't expect Pres. Obama to send you a script to work off every single time he's trying to get something done, can you?

That being said...I sure hope he does advocate for the public option - if only because a LOT of volunteers will be listening, and yes anything short of the public option doesn't get us motivated at all.

It can't be done without an assurance that the bill will contain a robust public option FOR EVERYONE who wants it.

Agreed. The WH has been weasaly and silient on the PO. Obama needs to fight for it and demand it in the final bill. So far, he has been a tremendous disappointment on the PO. It is hard to imagine they still don't realize the disaster at the polls if they fail on this.

What disaster at the polls?

Mark Blumenthal tackles a subject long near and dear to my heart - there is no overwhelming support for the public option because most don't even know what it is. Drives me nuts each time I hear "the people demand a public option"

xpost http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/talk/blogs/johnmccsf/2009/10/public-option-who-knows-it-who.php

"weasly and silent"???

You need to get out of your PJ's

THE PRESIDENT: It's not true. And one more misunderstanding I want to clear up -- under our plan, no federal dollars will be used to fund abortions, and federal conscience laws will remain in place. (Applause.)

Now, my health care proposal has also been attacked by some who oppose reform as a "government takeover" of the entire health care system. As proof, critics point to a provision in our plan that allows the uninsured and small businesses to choose a publicly sponsored insurance option, administered by the government just like Medicaid or Medicare. (Applause.)

Now, I have no interest in putting insurance companies out of business. They provide a legitimate service, and employ a lot of our friends and neighbors. I just want to hold them accountable. (Applause.) And the insurance reforms that I've already mentioned would do just that. But an additional step we can take to keep insurance companies honest is by making a not-for-profit public option available in the insurance exchange. (Applause.) Now, let me be clear. Let me be clear. It would only be an option for those who don't have insurance. No one would be forced to choose it, and it would not impact those of you who already have insurance. In fact, based on Congressional Budget Office estimates, we believe that less than 5 percent of Americans would sign up.

Despite all this, the insurance companies and their allies don't like this idea.

I think you're the fucking joke here. Sorry, every time someone calls me now imploring me for money to fight the "Republicans" on health care reform, I sweetly tell them that Republicans are not the problem, there aren't enough of them, Democrats are the problem. If you want undivided loyalty no matter how bad aspects of the bill are, you need to join the other party. We still reserve the right to use our brains over here.

For what it's worth, for those people who are even marginally more intelligent than the Glenn Beck troll who wandered in (HUSSEIN you idiot)

OFA volunteers are more than free to express their support for the President's call for a robust public option

OFA and HCAN are working together and the latter is even sponsoring trainings on how to advocate for health care reform, including the public option

Over 100 OFA volunteers, myself included have visited Dianne Feinstein's office to deliver just that message - PUBLIC OPTION NOW

Like I said - for what it's worth...and probably not much since some around here obviously have no idea what OFA volunteers are doing

I agree with what you've been saying in this thread johnmccsf; at least in priciple. In my letters and emails to Congress and the President, as well as the town halls, I've been telling them a strong PO (or something like it) is a must in the final bill.

However, I've also been saying that my financial support and energy is not free.

If the House passes a bill with a strong PO in it, then I will contribute time, energy, and $$$ to the Democrats in the House. Same is true for the Senate. Regardless of what makes it into the final bill that goes to The President.

My feeling, and the feelings of many I suspect, is, we have already contributed much time, energy, and $$$ to get the Democrats to this point; and its time to deliver.

If they do (even on a limited basis), they will get MORE time, energy, and $$$.

Action by Congress and the President (not simply words), and our blood and treasure, MUST be linked.

Otherwise, what are we doing??? Just making sure the Republicans stay down??

That's not enough. Speaking for me only.

Sounds like the best idea thus far. Make certain, in any calling you do, you remind them about it, too. It won't be in the OFA talking points, but that's where we put the "public" into "public option". if enough people take the time to contact lawmakers, and add our own opinion about the PO to the one we are being asked to relay about the healthcare reform bill, it puts a populist icing on a grassroots cake.

CALL YOUR CONGRESSPEOPLE! Encourage them to support this historic legislation. And THEN demand a public option as the last words they hear from you, in every call.

I wish you all more luck than I'll have, in terms of potential results.

I've got Moran, Brownback and Roberts. While it's unlikely that trio(R) will do the right thing, at least it is worth the phone calls, if for no other reason, just to know they know how one more constituent feels about this issue.

Right. This is what I have been telling them. I donated a lot of money last year, and a fair amount this year as well. Eventually, they have to do something in return. They don't just get to keep asking for money because they aren't Republicans, especially when Obama and friends have spent the last six months practically giving away the store to Olympia Snowe. No can do. I have kids to send to college too.

Can they not get 51 with P.O. and 60 for cloture?

Probably not, because when it comes to getting that 60 for cloture, you would see the true colors shining through, and they don't want to expose how many bluedogs are completely owned by the insurance lobby, or at least leased by them, right now in particular.

Again I must ask, what does 'of the people, by the people' really mean. This is not about Obama only, without your help, he can do very little. You don't have a dictatorship. As for some of the post here, it is obvious that this blog has been infiltrated by some disciples of the neocon movement. If you don't add your voice now to the effort, then don't think that electing the repugs in 2010 will bring you closer to the ultimate goal of coverage for all. Get up and fight for what you believe is your right. Bob Marley: Get up, stand up, stand up for your rights.

Nice. Unfortunately, we do not live in a pure democracy. We live in a constitutional republic.

We elect leaders to represent us in our government. We have NO votes in Congress.

Therefore, what we've done over the last two elections cycles, is beat our heads in until they bleed, given time, energy, and $$$ to representatives and our Party so they will have super majorities to work with.

We did that. We now have 256 Democrats in the House, 60 Democrats in the Senate, and a Democrat in the White House.

That kind of support and effort came with certain expectations.

Those expectations have been embodied by strong support for a strong PO in the healthcare legislation, by the President and Congress.

We've already contacted our representatives that we elected and told them it was OK to compromise on single payer.

But a line in the sand needs to be drawn on a strong PO (or something like it) in the exchange (or exchanges). I think that is very least we are owed for all the blood and treasure we have given up, to get the Democrats to this point.

Again, we can stand up all we want. But at the end of the day, the representatives we elected have to vote based on the values of our Party.

If they can't, that's OK.

But there WILL be consequences. No way around it.
