Virginia gubernatorial candidate Creigh Deeds (D) just announced President Obama will campaign with him.

It's no surprise Obama would cross the Potomac for Deeds on the eve of such a critical election. The rally will be Tuesday, Oct. 27, one week before the election.

The White House has said Obama strongly supports Deeds and will do all he can to help him defeat Republican candidate Bob McDonnell. Obama activated his grassroots supporters from his Organizing for America campaign list earlier this week, asking them to volunteer this weekend.

Obama was last in Virginia for Deeds Aug. 7.

Deeds is behind in the polls and some Democrats are worried.

It will be an uphill climb, but timing is everything. The key is to not peak too soon or too late - and three weeks out, it looks like the machine is warming itself up.

"a strong finisher" - not even Mariano Rivera could save this one for Deeds; I'm surprised Obama's wasting political capital appearing with Deeds, unless he surrounds himself with State House candidates and tries to salvage their campaigns. The Dems had a losing hand from the start; McAuliffe and Moran were the better Primary candidates, but would never win the General Election, and Deeds was a poor Primary candidate, but had a chance to win the General Election; his inept campaign blew that chance weeks ago.

I agree with your analysis on the primary. The reason N VA went for Deeds is that a whole lot of us could never figure out how Terry or Brian could win the General Election PLUS Deeds not only had the endorsement of his fellow state senators from N VA they went all out for him. Senator Whipple (Arlington County) was a major key to Deeds carrying Arlington County by the margin he did.

I am not as negative as you about Deeds' campaign ths far. There is no question that it could have been better, but I think it may be possible to win this. There is a growing discussion of whether we want Pat Robertson to be our next Governor--my answer is hell no. Part of the problem is that VA has not recovered from the fiscal insanity of the Allen and Gilmore Administrations despite the herculean efforts of Mark Warner and Tim Kaine. There will have to be a tax increase, but it is impossible to openly campaign statewide on it and win. I think we can pull this one out; it will be difficult no doubt. If we do win VA, the VA House of Delegates, the NY special, and NJ, the poliitcal fallout will be massive and you will see Republicans heading for the koolaid. [At this point I like the looks of NJ and the NY special.]
