The Progressive Change Campaign Committee, which has been ramping up its campaign for a public option in the last several weeks, will run the below ad in Nevada this week, urging Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to fight for the public option as he takes the lead in designing a health care bill to bring to the Senate floor.
PCCC is raising funds this week in the hope of running the ad 200 times in Las Vegas on cable and broadcast networks. It will begin airing on Wednesday. You can read a letter from PCCC to its supporters below the fold.
Reid's staff has scoffed at similar efforts in recent weeks, saying that while Reid is working to build consensus for a public option, he will not likely respond to strong-arm tactics.
XXXXXX,Today, we're unveiling a new TV ad called, "Is Harry Reid strong enough?"
Senate Majority Leader Reid is brokering a health care bill this week. But he seems ready to cave to a few corporate Democrats who want to kill a public health insurance option. We can't let that happen.
Our ad features one of Harry Reid's constituents, Nevada nurse Lee Slaughter. She has seen insurance companies cut off care to patients in need -- and says that in 2010, she will vote on only one issue: "I'm watching to see if Harry Reid is strong and effective enough as a leader to pass a public option into law."
Click here to see our powerful new ad -- and help us air it 200 times in Nevada.
We know that Sen. Reid is concerned about his election next year. Polls show him trailing Republicans, and he's already running campaign ads.
Our ad will remind him that for many voters back home, the public option is a make-or-break issue. Voters want Reid to fight for the public option and win -- not cave.
Keith Olbermann reports that Reid is "pushing back against progressives" and "setting expectations low." That's unacceptable. The public overwhelmingly wants the public option. Democrats control the government, with a huge 60-seat Senate majority.
This week is critical. We need Harry Reid to be a strong and effective leader right now. It has never been more important.
Can you help us send our own strong message to Harry Reid? Click here to see our new ad and help put it on TV.
Thanks for being a bold progressive.

Given his interview performance over the last couple years, I wonder if the question isn't "Is Harry Reid getting senile?". He seems to be in favor of different things at different times - rarely if ever consistent.

reduces the cost of reform
the only Cost Control measure against the Insurance Industries threat to raise premiums
Should be open to anyone who wants it
Why is Harry against it again?

interesting bit from Roll Call:
Republicans were hoping that Democratic divisions would do to Obama’s health care agenda what the GOP can’t, but they no longer expect moderate Democrats to stand in the way of passage — even one that includes a public insurance option.

After watching the administrations representatives on three Sunday morning talk shows all say that the President doesn't believe a public option is neccessary, PCCC should be asking this question about Obama as well.
And remember, Reid was CHOSEN and is supported by his fellow Senate Democrats as their leader. His failings and weakness are a reflection of theirs.

I can't remember which one I was watching, I think it was on two separate shows,
but Obama is for the Public Option,
he is just unwilling to fight for it
-perhaps as part of the deal he made to garner industry support.

I'm through assuming Obama is failing to keep his campaign promises due to some political strategy. He's broken too many for me to believe that any more. It's not just health care.
Just look at Obama's pick for Treasury. Geithner is the banking industries errend boy.

I hear ya.
In my opinion, supporting something, but being unwilling to fight for it makes your support pretty worthless.

I don't get it. It's our own damned fault if we don't get this. Why? Because the buck stops with OBAMA and we are scared shitless to go after him. We treat him like a rock star. He's the one giving us all the double-talking BS about "I'd like to see a public option, but I won't demand one." He is the one who is choosing Snowe over us.
It is Barak Obama we should be going after. But we are still coddling him. He could call Reid any second and say: "I'm not signing a bill without a Public Option in it."
The ad has the wrong target.
The real question is: Does Obama have the balls to get real health reform with a robust public option, and forget this bi-partisan BS which is really a ball and chain around his neck.

agree. and there is nothing wrong in pointing out there are very real electoral consequences for acquiescing to WH wishes
it should also serve to remind others they can run but can no longer hide

While I would be among the first in line to say a word or two about Reid, and keeping the pressure of Reid makes sense- I'm not sure he is the only one disinterested about the PO.
I'm just waitig for Reid to say the truth about lack of support from the WH about the PO, one of these days.

Senator Reid has a long track record of fighting fiercely for Nevada. I remain confident in his commitment and ability to secure the strongest health care reform possible. He has pledged to bring a bill with a public option to the President.
With respect, I think these outside groups don't understand Nevada politics; they denigrate the record of reforms and victories that Senator Reid has accomplished for our state.

We're not worried about his vote. If he was just another backbencher then it wouldn't make as much of a difference. But he's the damn majority leader, with the power to make or break legislation, and he's ignoring 2/3 of his substantial majority. So if it means losing one vote in order to get real leadership, then yes it's worth it.
