Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid addressed a development, first reported by TPMDC, that Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) will filibuster a health care bill if it includes a public option.

"Joe Lieberman is the least of Harry Reid's problems," Reid told reporters at his weekly press conference.

During a Q&A session with reporters, Reid offered a fairly spirited defense of Lieberman, signaling perhaps that he doesn't believe Lieberman will ultimately be an obstacle--or at least that he doesn't want to tip his hat: "I don't have anyone that I've worked harder with, have more respect for, in the Senate than Joe Lieberman. As you know, he's my friend. There are a lot of senators--Democrat and Republicans--who don't like [parts of this bill]... Sen. Lieberman will let us get on the bill, and he'll be involved in the amendment process."

Reid went on, "Some of you will recall one reason that we were able to solve the problem with the nuclear option is that I called Joe Lieberman to my office, and said Joe I want you to join the enemy and get us out of this deal."

The response comes only an hour or so after Lieberman told reporters that though he's inclined not to stand in the way of a floor debate on health care, he'd exercise his right as a senator to filibuster it if he didn't approve of the final package--and he says the public option in the Senate bill is a bridge to far for him at the moment.

"We'll get it on the floor, we'll have an amendment process, and that's what we do," Reid said. "We haven't been doing a lot of it because we've had 81 objections so far this year by the Republicans."

I mean, who is being quoted? :P

By "Other side" I mean that I tend to assume first that the WH is playing things slow and steady. Not trying to push things from the top down but purposfully frustrating progressives forcing them to force change from the bottom up. That's how he played the campaign.

It seems to me you are skeptical of that being the case and skeptical that Obama and co. really want the PO. I know you would like more vocal public support of it. Where I'm trusting that they are likely vocal enough just not so much that we hear about it, probably by design.

When Obama says that the PO is not that important, I take him at his word.

Fair enough... I see that as more along the lines of "If you want it, you need to show weary Senators that the Opinion polls are accurate."

I don't blame him really, It's not like the was a march on washington that was Pro-HCR.

Yes, I know the tea-baggers are not really representative of the general public but some out-of-touch senators aren't as sure as I am.

At this point, It seems that Reid at least got the message. Thanks, I'm sure in part because Progressives have gotten a bit more vocal as it seemed the PO was near death.

What? You want context for an unclear quote that vaguely sounds like it might signal a backtrack on the public option and could potentially rile up lots of page views? Just who do you think you're reading here? Josh Marshall?

Shorter Harry: Joe will cave when I tell him to cave. Not surprising. Joe's one and only lifeline to relevancy in DC is his chairmanship. Stripped of seniority in the caucus, he's a complete non entity. And the one thing that Joe loves more than anything else is reading his name in the paper. No one's going to pay attention to the utterly powerless junior senator without a party from Connecticut.

A poster at DailyKos claims that he called Senator Lieberman's office and an aid told him that the news organizations made a mistake and that Senator Lieberman will vote for cloture.

http://www.dailykos.com/comments/2009/10/27/14398/440/22#c22

I don't offer a random DailyKos poster as a credible source, but it might be worth TPM giving the Senator's office a call for an official quote.

Good question. I don't know. I just thought TPM might want to follow up on the article with a call to Senator Leiberman's office. My guess is that the aids just haven't been updated yet on the Senator's position. It would be nice if Leiberman has already backed off his earlier comments though.

Refers to himself in the third person, and then there's this:

"Some of you will recall one reason that we were able to solve the problem with the nuclear option is that I called Joe Lieberman to my office, and said Joe I want you to join the enemy and get us out of this deal."

Joe, join the enemy and get us out of this deal? Hello? Is Harry tired? Taking too much cold medication?

Here's the thing to remember. A lot of these Senators have to publicly act the part they're supposed to act. Lieberman has to keep up appearances with the insurance companies in his state. It's the same with various other Senators. You'll never hear a categorical statement that they intend to vote against this measure - they always leave the door open. When the chips are down, none of them are going to be willing to be the one to kill health care reform.

Take anything they say publicly with a large grain of salt.

Especially the notorious glory hounds like Lieberman.

This guy went as far as supporting and campaigning McCain for Chrissakes...

All he said was he reserves the right to filibuster, if the bill remains as it is (which he hasn't even seen since its not complete).

So Lieberman really only pointed out he's a senator that can do what any other senator can do.

Provacative, Yes... News, Not so Much...

The same kind of thing goes for Landrieu, Lincoln, Bayh and Nelson. They're from states where Dems aren't that popular. They have to at least LOOK like they're not just going along. It's all about perception back home. In the end they'll vote for it and issue the usual generic statement about how good this is for America and how pleased they are to have helped improve it from its initial form. Blah blah blah.

I think you have it mostly right.

My concern is really Landrieu and Lincoln won't put 2 and 2 together and realize that kissing the asses on conservatives MAY buy them some votes but if they lose their ideoligical Base voters in the effort they lose anyway.

He's smart enough to see that the best way to get Democrats to cater to you is to oppose them.

Senator Kent Conrad knows that The Bank of North Dakota is the only state-owned bank in America and has $4 billion under management.

Is Senator Conrad of North Dakota aware of this fact? If Senator Conrad is aware of this fact then he is one of the biggest hypocrites ever. Senator Conrad of North Dakota is against government run health care insurance option and he is not against the Bank of North Dakota? Senator Conrad this bank is a great example of socialism. Maybe Senator Conrad does not know the meaning of socialism. The Bank of North Dakota has $4 billion under management.

It should also be noted that Bank of North Dakota earned a record profit last year even as the so called big banks lost billions and had to get assistance from the government. Could state-owned banks across America get us out of the financial mess? Maybe we need to take a good look at the Bank of North Dakota. Maybe we need to ask Senator Conrad about the Bank of North Dakota. I think we should call his office and ask him about the Bank of North Dakota.

By 1919, popular consensus wanted state ownership and control of marketing and credit agencies. The state legislature established Bank of North Dakota and the North Dakota Mill and Elevator Association.

Bank of North Dakota was charged with the mission of "encouraging and promoting agriculture, commerce and industry" in North Dakota. It was never intended for Bank of North Dakota to compete with or replace existing banks. Instead, Bank of North Dakota was created to partner with other banks and assist them in meeting the needs of the citizens of North Dakota. Just like the proposed PUBLIC OPTION.

The state Industrial Commission oversees Bank of North Dakota, as mandated by the 1919 state legislature. Members of the Industrial Commission are the Governor, who acts as chairman, the Attorney General and the Commissioner of Agriculture of the State of North Dakota.

The Bank also has a seven-member Advisory Board appointed by the Governor. The members are knowledgeable in banking and finance. The Advisory Board reviews the Bank's operations and makes recommendations to the Industrial Commission relating to the Bank's management, services, policies and procedures.

The deposit base of Bank of North Dakota is unique. Its primary deposit base is the State of North Dakota. All state funds and funds of state institutions are deposited with Bank of North Dakota, as required by law. Other deposits are accepted from any source, private citizens to the US government.

We need to call Senator Conrad and ask him to explain the Bank of North Dakota. We need to ask him if the Bank of North Dakota is a socialist Bank. We need to ask him if the Bank of North Dakota should be closed since it is run by the State of North Dakota.

I do not believe these so called Senators. They are for Medicare, assistance to farmers and other kinds of subsidy from the government.

Reid used Lieberman to avoid the nuclear option? That was another big sell out. In return for the Republicans not using the nuclear option Reid let almost all of the problematic judges through.

I wanted the GOP to use the nuclear option. If they had, we could use it now too, and wouldn't need 60 votes to pass health care.

Reid is a serious problem and if he's going to fail this time he should be primaried out of office.

Yes, and the check was completely unexpected after our side's king had been entirely written off as MIA and unclear in his leadership as to what he 'wanted' in the bill. Perhaps liberal blogs are infested with right wing concern troll hacks these days.

But the surprise element of the unexpectedly strong position does catch the opposition off guard and out of sync in mustering troops and refocusing their attack. Hopefully our pimp can keep checking them off guard to force mate.
