We asked Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's spokesman Jim Manley whether Sen. Joe Lieberman's (ID-CT) position as a senior member of the Democratic caucus and a committee chairman is still secure, in light of his new comments that he will filibuster the public option.
"Nothing has changed," Manley told us.

Nothing is changed unless LIEberman actually filibusters. "Threatening" to filibuster isn't the same thing as doing it.

Didntcha kinda think that at this point, you were going to get the same answer to that question no matter what they were really thinking and talking about?
If Lieberman comes in at the last minute and buggers leadership and the White House on their number one legislative priority after the way they stuck their necks out for him, they'll pull out the flamethrowers and reduce his ass to a pile of cinders. If he's not going to be the 60th vote on the party's domestic agenda, then they're better off driving him into the the Teabaglican Party. if he's the barrier to getting anything done, then it's better for the CW meme to be "they can't get anything done because they don't have 60" than "they can't get anything done despite having 60."
The problem is that the smug, narcissistic little nihilist has never suffered any consequences for his vandalism before so he won't believe he'll suffer any now it until after it happens.

I think it depends on whether Sen. Mentum wants another term or not. If he does, then Obama and Reid have leverage. But if he sees the writing on the wall, and realizes he is going to have a tough time getting re-elected, there's not much leverage anyone has over him.
So for once, I'm hoping he will continue to be the deluded, overweaning little shit he's been since 2000.

Why is it that Republicans and Lieberman are never threatened with anything? Why do right-wingers who pull crap in Congress never get anything *they* want taken away from them? Why is it only Democrats and liberals who are ever punished or censured or chastised?
Oh, right, I forgot: the Republicans (including Lieberman) in power have no shame and no actual interest in administration. They are ruthless hypertribalists only interested in their own profit and the profit of their masters...

you wouldn't expect anything to have changed at this critical time. If Joe actually does join a filibuster (he's only boasted at this point) maybe then, but I doubt anything would change until the next Congress.

Yes. Totally alienate him now and get nothing at all done and increase the chances the Repugnicans gain seats in 2010. Get some popular things done and gain seats in 2010 and then throw Lieberbum out on his ass.

If nothing has changed then the problem is Reid's leadership, and that's what needs to be changed.
