The GOP contingent on a Senate environmental committee will boycott a hearing aimed at moving a bill limiting carbon emissions toward final passage next week.
Environment and Public Works Committee chair Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) has scheduled a markup hearing on the cap-and-trade bill for Tuesday. The markup process is a key step before a bill leaves committee on its way to an eventual floor vote. All seven Republicans on Boxer's committee, led by ranking member Sen. James Inhfe (R-OK) will not attend Boxers hearing, and will instead hold a separate shadow hearing of their own focused on slowing down the cap-and-trade bill.
CongressDaily (sub. req.) reports on the GOP's reasons for the boycott:
Republicans want EPA to do a full analysis of the bill and have CBO weigh in as well. Further, they want more time to look at the bill. Boxer has defended the process, noting she unveiled a revised Kerry-Boxer cap-and-trade bill Oct. 23, which exceeds the three-day notice required under panel rules. She also has cited three hearings this week on that bill and previous hearings by the panel on the general subject. Republicans counter that Democratic demands for additional analysis delayed a markup three times on a GOP "Clear Skies" bill before it fell on a 9-9 vote in March 2005.

I think it would be more pudent for all 40 of the GOP Senators to resign and establish their own "shadow" senate somewhere in northern Alaska or somewhere.

At least until the permafrost melted under their shadow senate building and the building started sinking into the mire.

They'll follow up this boycott by complaining that they had no opportunity for input.

Well, without the Republicans, I guess the committee vote to send the final bill to the Senate will be unanimous. How bipartisan can you get?

Their arguments are fact-free, as a rule of thumb, so it really doesn't matter whether they use the same argument over and over and over again anyway, Right?
But it's certain as...um...death & taxes???...that these thugs will become guest commentators on almost every "news" show of the corporate mass media (I'm talking to YOU, Chris Matthews and David Gregory!) to speak those tired old lines, as though they were brand new and shiny thoughts.

That's... wait, that's a good thing, right? If they're not at the markup they can't slow it down, offer amendments etc, no...?

I find it hilarious that the Ranking Member of the Environment and Public Works Committee is a person who doesn't even believe the environment exists.
Given that he's a Republican, I bet he also believes that the statement 'public works' is false too.

He says he believes global warming is made up. I think that's consistent with believing the environment doesn't exist.

Good grief. They sound like they haven't moved past the 5th grade. In addition to which they missed those days in school when democracy was discussed.

Actually, since they only have 40 votes, why don't they just boycott the senate until the next election so that we can get sh*t done.

I dunno...this seems like a logical next step for global warming deniers. They will now simply be Senate Environmental Committee deniers too.
One has to admire their commitment to doing nothing. I say 'Hats off!'
