The Republican National Committee announced it will immediately back Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman following GOP candidate Dede Scozzafava's campaign suspension in the special election in New York's 23rd Congressional district.

Here is Chairman Mike Steele's statement.

"The Republican National Committee respects Dede's decision to suspend her campaign. This selfless act of releasing her supporters provides voters with the opportunity to unite around a candidate who shares Republican principles and will serve the interests of his constituents in Congress by standing in opposition to the liberal policies of President Obama and Speaker Pelosi.

Effective immediately, the RNC will endorse and support the conservative candidate in the race, Doug Hoffman. Doug's campaign will receive the financial backing of the RNC, and get-out-the-vote efforts to defeat Bill Owens on Tuesday.

I appreciate the hard work Dede put into her campaign, and for understanding the political reality of this race. By releasing her supporters she has gracefully placed the Party before her own self interest, and for this she deserves enormous credit and respect."

The DCCC weighs in as well with a jab at the National Republican Congressional Committee.

"From day 1, the NRCC has mishandled the race to replace former Congressman John McHugh. The NRCC spent nearly $1 million - a quarter of their current cash on hand - on a race where they didn't understand the district or how NY State ballots worked, and couldn't lock in the endorsements of their own leadership," said DCCC spokeswoman Jennifer Crider.

NRCC certainly wasted a lot of money given a generic Republican would have beat a generic Democrat 60-40 in the district.

"will serve the interests of his constituents"

I'm sure Hoffman is capable of serving the interests of his constituents. He doesn't seem like he's literally unable to do it. The only problem is that he doesn't know what those interests are. And to add insult to injury, he thinks that those interests are "parochial" to national issues and making a contrived political point.

Mr. Steele, please stop talking. You really don't know what the situation here is.

What else are they going to do, leave Hoffman twisting in the wind? In fact, he's probably much closer to them ideologically than Scozzafava ever would be. It does point out how despicable the national Republican party actually is. Where were they when Scozzafava got the nomination?

Where were they when Scozzafava got the nomination?

Supporting her - she got the support of most of the elected reps in Washington, who know a little bit about how to hold on to power.

And Steele & the RNC easily could have left Hoffman twisting in the wind. Hoffman was not endorsed by the GOP, and he was running against their candidate and knocked her out of the race.

By endorsing him now - by rewarding him for knocking out their candidate - they've just encouraged all kinds of right-wing 3rd party attacks on their other candidates.

This could be the beginning of the end of the GOP.

This move by Scozzafava was clearly a hail mary pass for the GOP.It's now obvious that Owens had a real chance in winning this thing.

NY-23 Siena Poll Bad News for Owens

from Pollster.com All Content by charles@politicalarithmetik.com (Charles Franklin)
by Charles Franklin
This is a quick note on the new Siena poll in light of Scozzafava dropping out.
Can Owens pick up from Scozzafava supporters? Not so likely given these poll results.
Owens Fav/Unfav among Scozzafava suppporters: 19/50
Hoffman Fav/Unfav among Scozzafava supporters: 15/57
Looks like a wash with many likely to skip the choice of two disliked alternatives.
And the worse news for Owens is among independents:
Ind. Fav/Unfav Owens: 39/47
Ind. Fav/Unfav Hoffman: 47/33
More after daughter's soccer game!
