The new Republican National Committee Web site has been derided for its "GOP Heroes" section -- which teaches us that almost all of the great Republicans lived in the 1800's, and about half of them were black -- but there's another illustrious name on the list: Ronaldus Magnus.

The site's page on Ronald Reagan includes this citation of the party's great hero, giving him a stylized name we might see on a Roman emperor:

Our country has to decide, said Ronaldus Magnus, "whether we believe in our capacity for self-government or whether to abandon the American Revolution and confess that a little intellectual elite in a far-distant capital can plan our lives better than we can plan them ourselves."

And to think that the GOP makes fun of the Democrats for allegedly worshiping Obama.

We've called the RNC office for comment on how this got there, giving them the benefit of the doubt that maybe this is a product of those hackers we've been hearing about as a result of the site's security problems. They have not gotten back to us yet.

Late Update: The page has now been edited, removing Reagan's Latin throne name. It now simply says, "Our country has to decide, said Reagan..."

I would be shocked if this was a hack. It should come as no surprise to anyone that the same group of folks that want Reagan on currency and mount Rushmore would refer to him as some sort of Roman emperor.

I was thinking it was more a term for an extinct dinosaur, like 'Conservitus Headbutticus': "a nearly extinct creature that suffocates under the weight of it's own self-contradictions when fully developed."

And to think that the GOP makes fun of the Democrats for allegedly worshiping Obama.

It's called "projection." It's what they do. It's what they've always done. Everything they accuse Democrats, liberals, or progressives of doing, they have done themselves, or would like to do once they're back in power.

St. Ronnie has been worshipped by the GOP since he was first elected president. Think back to the 2008 Republican primaries, when every candidate, without exception, praised Reagan and promised to be like him if they got elected. It's no surprise that the people who are working on their spiffy new website have internalized all this to the point that they can write something like "Ronaldus Magnus" and not see the inherent creepiness.

Inherent creepiness indeed. Since when do we citizens allow our (ostensibly) elected presidents titles resembling those of tyrannical Roman emperors? They should fear US -- not the reverse. Perhaps that elitist jerk, Rushus Limbaughness Vicodinus, wants some Roman debauchery -- several boys, maybe toss a few liberals to the lions -- but who else?

Republicans...make me laugh.

Art. I, Sec. 9 says Congress cant:

-ban African Slave Trade before 1/1/1800;

-suspend Habeus Corpus unless there's a rebellion, an invasion or a psychotic vice president with a psychotic staff says so;

-pass bills of attainder or ex post facto laws;

-tax the states except in proportion to their population (and, of course, the 16th Amendement wasn't legally adopted, so all income tax laws are invalid);

-impose duties on interstate transactions or engage in similar hoo-hah;

-embezzle money from the treasury; or,

-grant titles of nobility (like, say, "Magnus?").

Knowing these people, I'm going to guess that either they have some twisted theory about taxes, think the Nobel is a title of nobility or they want to reinstate the slave trade.

Their reference to Section 9 is from Beck's book. Basically, Beck claims the first clause (which allows a tax of no more than 10 dollars on the "importation of persons", i.e. slaves) refers to immigration, and that we should be therefore charging immigrants who want to come to the US instead of letting them in for free. In the reality-based world, of course, we do in fact charge immigrants substantial fees - hundreds of dollars worth:

I turn to the Freepers for answers to such questions. Apparently they feel that article 1 section 8 enumerates the laws congress *can* make, and article 1 section 9 enumerates those they *can't*. I guess they're calling Graham a traitor for passing laws he's not supposed to be able to pass?

I just sent this in by email before I noticed this thread:
=================================
Did you notice the tagline at the bottom of that bio?

"For more information on these and other Accomplishments of the Republican Party, see Back to Basics for the Republican Party, by Michael Zak"

These bios and the list of 'accomplishments' seem to be cut-and-paste jobs from Zak's book. Zak's website - republicanbasics.com, includes this bit of info in his bio:

"Mr. Zak is a popular speaker to Republican organizations around the country, showing office-holders, candidates, and activists how they would benefit tremendously from knowing and appreciating the heritage of our Grand Old Party.

As he says, “The more we Republicans know about the history of our Party, the more the Democrats will worry about the future of theirs.”

Topics of his presentations include:

• the Heritage of our Grand Old Party
• Returning to our Founding Principles
• Ronaldus Magnus
• Abraham Lincoln, Republican
• Martin Luther King and the Republican Civil Rights Legacy
• Frederick Douglass, Republican
• Susan B. Anthony and other Republican Suffragists"

So the 'Ronaldus Magnus' soubriquet seems to be just an artifact of a cut-and-paste, not an official movement to Caesar-ize Reagan. Even though that sentiment is palpable within the RNC, I'll ascribe this to just plain laziness. Wonder if they got permission or paid Mr. Zak for his contribution to the site?

Did Zak also come up with Jackie Robinson as a Republlican? The same Jackie Robinson that said:

"I was not as sold on the Republican party as I was on the governor," Robinson wrote of Rockefeller. "Every chance I got, while I was campaigning, I said plainly what I thought of the right-wing Republicans and the harm they were doing. I felt the GOP was a minority party in term of numbers of registered voters and could not win unless they updated their social philosophy and sponsored candidates and principles to attract the young, the black, and the independent voter. I said this often from public, and frequently Republican, platforms. By and large Republicans had ignored blacks and sometimes handpicked a few servile leaders in the black community to be their token "niggers." How would I sound trying to go all out to sell Republicans to black people? They're not buying. They know better."

"I admit freely that I think, live, and breathe black first and foremost. That is one of the reasons I was so committed to the governor and so opposed to Senator Barry Goldwater. Early in 1964 I wrote a Speaking Out piece for The Saturday Evening Post. A Barry Goldwater victory would insure that the GOP would be completely the white man's party. What happened at San Francisco when Senator Goldwater became the Republican standard-bearer confirmed my prediction."

I just can't get over this Jackie Robinson thing, and how they twist Robinson's actual political views. From the "GOP Heroes" page:

Not only was he a great athlete, Jackie Robinson was also a great Republican. He campaigned for Richard Nixon's presidential campaign in 1960 and then supported Nelson Rockefeller (R-NY) for the Republican nomination in 1964.

From the "Framingham Democratic Town Committee" website:

After baseball Robinson went to work for Chock Full O' Nuts as a spokesman then continued his efforts to advance civil rights. He became actively involved in the campaign for Republican candidate Richard Nixon in the 1960 Presidential elections. Robinson opted to support Nixon over John F. Kennedy because he liked the work that Nixon had done in the area of civil rights during Nixon's years as Vice President. However Robinson later described his regret on having supported Nixon. Two incidents during the 1960 campaign were quite disillusioning to Robinson. In one incident Nixon was asked to comment on a statement by running mate Henry Cabot Lodge who stated that in a Nixon Administration a black would be named to the Cabinet; Nixon commented that Lodge was speaking on his own behalf. Later during the campaign Nixon refused to speak out when civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was locked in a full-security prison for a minor motor vehicle infraction. Further Nixon refused to campaign in Harlem (while Kennedy did). These incidents drew Robinson a great deal of criticism from the African American community for his support of the Nixon campaign. By the end of the campaign the Kennedy ticket was looking more attractive to Robinson, but he had already committed to Nixon. Jackie Robinson did establish good ties with New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller (who later became Gerald Ford's Vice President). Robinson supported Rockefeller's bid during the 1964 Republican Primiaries. However after the GOP ticket went to Barry Goldwater, Robinson was disgusted at what he saw during the 1964 Republican National Convention.

This labelling is pretty vile, but I feel many commenters anger at it is historically misdirected. It's NOT a title or appellation of a Roman Emperor. Also, the style is wrong for a Roman name. It needs to be Ronaldus Reaganius Magnus or something like that with three parts to the name for it to be a 'proper' Roman form.

Pompey "the Great" (G. Pompeius Magnus) was granted that cognomen by the Senate during the late republic. As well as Caesar, The usual style of an emperor is "Augustus" - the title bestowed on Octavian by the senate. Something like "Imperator Ceasar Reaganius Augustus" would do the trick.

As you can see, it means "great" in Latin, as in "The Great", It is much more popular during the Medieval period. E.g. Alfred The Great (the only "British" king to ever get that appellation, Alfred was a Saxon king of Wessex in the 9th century). Also, Charlemagne, in Medieval Latin he's "Carolus Magnus", that's Charles The Great, I guess "Charle Magne" in Frankish or whatever language (Charlemagne still styled himself Imperator Augustus by the way)

Perhaps deliciously, there was a Roman 'Magnus' who was an usurper to the throne after Alexander Severus. I think it was probably a praenomen (i.e. a common name, bearing in mind 60% of Roman men were either Lucius, Gaius or Marcus). His plot was discovered and he was executed.

My impression of the name as it is being employed by these undemocratic dickwads is that it's a style of a Medieval King, not a Roman Emperor.

Of course I doubt an arse like Limbaugh would know any of this, or want to know. But being accurate is probably important given that there must be at one of these patrician dullards who stayed awake in history class long enough to be able mock your inaccuracy if you try to bring it up in public.
