Grover Norquist's Americans for Tax Reform is targeting Sen. Ben Nelson (D-NE) on health care with a national cable television ad that also will air in Nebraska.
Norquist, who has made a career of holding local, state and federal lawmakers accountable to signing a pledge with his group about not raising taxes, provides supporters a copy of the Nelson pledge in an ATR blog post today.
"He is bound by that Pledge for the duration of his career as a senator," ATR wrote, blasting the health care bill.
What's more, they are pressuring Nelson - already being hammered by the left on this issue - to filibuster the procedural motion to move forward on health care debate, suggesting a vote for what is known as cloture is a violation of the pledge.
"Now is the time where Senator Nelson must follow through on the promise he made to get elected," ATR wrote.
The ad after the jump.
Nelson said yesterday on CNN he prefers a public option where states are able to "opt in" instead of the one being floated where they "opt out."

Senator Nelson, remember, dance with the one that brought you. The right is not to be trusted. They WILL try to take you out, no matter how much you pander.

Right now, I'm seeing a banner ad with the big red hand and the caption, "Hands off my health care!" I think this is the ad that Americans For Prosperity is running. I have no problem with that ad being here -- as far as I'm concerned, they can run their ad here if they pay Josh. I just find it funny that AFP is running an ad for such an unreceptive audience. Not enough viewers on Red State?

Being attacked by Norquist should push Nelson to support reform.

I just love these 'anti-tax' people. They think living in this country should be 'FREE'! But...they all seem to enjoy the benefits and conveniences that our taxes go to pay for. And, please don't say they enjoy the 'military, the roads and the parks, just nothing else'. That is bull! If we all get to choose where our taxes go, then I choose not to have mine go to bailing out huge banks and war.
These people have ruined the state of California, and they plan on ruining all the other states, too. This 'pledge' they try to blackmail politicians into signing, is UNAMERICAN! They all seem to like to brag about what a wonderful and great country we live in, but do not want to support it!
If you don't want to pay to live in America, then go somewhere else.

Are there other Dems besides Nelson that signed the Norquist pledge?
Until now, I thought only avowed Republicans signed the Norquist pledge.

Well, you can count out Ben Nelson for doing anything useful on health care.
When the right wing criticizes, he folds like a house of cards.
Last thing he worries about is health care for American people. his image and support from the insurance lobby is much more important to him.
This is a fact of life.
