Senate Finance Committee To Vote On Health Care Bill
The Senate Finance Committee is expected to vote today on the Baucus health care bill. Democrats hold a 13-10 majority on the committee, so approval is widely expected -- though questions remain as to whether any Dems will vote against it from the left, or whether Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe might vote yes.

Obama's Day Ahead
President Obama will meet at 11:25 a.m. ET with Vice President Biden. He will meet at 12:15 p.m. ET with President Zapatero of Spain, and the two of them will make statements to the press at 1:05 p.m. ET. He will meet at 2:10 p.m. with Sen. Evan Bayh (D-IN). Obama and Biden will meet at 4:35 p.m. ET with Secretary of Defense Robert Gates. At 7:15 p.m. ET, the Obamas and Bidens will attend a performance on the South Lawn, "Fiesta Latina."

After Finance Committee, Democrats Looking Ahead
The Washington Post reports that Democrats are already planning ahead for what will come after the Senate Finance Committee vote on health care. "After Tuesday's vote, Baucus will retreat to Reid's office, along with Sen. Christopher J. Dodd (D-Conn.) and a handful of top White House officials, to meld the finance panel's package with an alternative bill that Dodd shepherded through the Senate health committee in July."

Snowe Risks Possible Ranking Membership With Health Care Bill
The Hill reports that Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-ME) is risking a chance at becoming the ranking Republican on the Senate Commerce Committee, which is opening up due to the resignation of Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX), if she were to back the Democrats on health care. "A vote for healthcare would be something that would weigh on our minds when it came time to vote," said an unnamed Republican on the committee.

Clinton And Gates Forge Alliance Within Obama White House
The New York Times reports that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates have emerged as an unlikely partnership within the Obama administration. "Most of my career, secretaries of state and defense weren't speaking to each other," Gates said recently. "And it could get pretty ugly, actually."

Summers Tells Boehner: Bush Era To Blame For Our Problems
White House economic adviser Larry Summers wrote a letter to House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH), putting the blame for current economic and budgetary problems squarely on the Republicans and the Bush years. "Every major policy enacted during this period violated the principle of paying for new proposals," wrote Summers. "These policy decisions were the primary driver that turned historic projected surpluses into record deficits."

Liz Cheney Launches 'Keep America Safe'
Liz Cheney has launched a new group to mobilize opposition to President Obama on foreign policy, called Keep America Safe. "Whether you're a Republican or a Democrat, you want the nation to be strong," said Cheney, "and so many steps this president is taking are making the nation weaker."

Once again, Republicans inadvertently show their colors.

Not "a vote for the Senate Finance Committee health care bill". Not "a vote for health care as the Democrats envision it". Not "a vote for single payer health care." Not "a vote for a public option".

"A vote for health care".

Yes, Republicans, what a truly, truly awful thing to vote for: health care.

And yet she risks losing her job if she goes along with those nutballs.

See many other GOP senators in the NE?

The GOP hate Snowe and Collins, but they act like moderates because its that or losing. So the GOP can cry and stamp their feet, but it will only hurt them at least in the NE. That's why playing "harball" with Spector was a spectacular failure.

If Olympia Snowe doesn't vote for it, her input on the final bill will be far less for why should the Senate bill add her input when she isn't going to vote for it any ways.

You gotta play ball or go home. That's what I don't get about the GOP -- you just vote "no" on everything and expect to be listened to. Yeah ,right.

They don't actually expect to be listened to, they just want to get mileage out of complaining about being ignored. (It's not like they have any useful ideas to contribute, or they'd be proposing their own counter-agenda instead of just complaining about ours.)

With all GOP tactics, it's best to start with the assumption that they're lying, and try to figure out what they're up to from there.

Am I the only one bothered by the fact that the Republicans are threatening Snowe's status as a mere ranking member if she votes for a bill in committee, but that so far we know of no credible threat by the Democratic leadership against Lieberman, Nelson, or the other potential obstructionists if they actually vote against cloture on signal Democratic legislation?

Sheesh.

Probably because if the Dem leadership did revoke leadership positions from Nelson, Lieberman, etc., they'd simply switch parties and get elected that way. And then we lose their votes on other matters.

That was exactly my reaction, too. Especially when you compare the GOP's threat of retaliation against Snowe for a vote on the merits vs. the Democrats' failure to threaten retaliation on what would be a procedural vote. If Harry Reid can't exercise real leadership and hold all 60 members of the caucus together on cloture, he should be summarily removed as majority leader.

"...no credible threat by the Democratic leadership against Lieberman, Nelson, or the other potential obstructionists if they actually vote against cloture on signal Democratic legislation?"

Nor should there be. We should not be aping these kind of Republican tactics.

wrong...party disipline is needed for actual health care reform or the dems will be throwing away the rest of obama's agenda...

True that. If we're going to have something as stupid and un-American as "parties" instead of simply being principled, dedicated American legislators and executives, then let's have a party that acts like there's another party working against them.

If there are two teams on a playing field, and one of them refuses to admit that there's even a game going on, the other team is going to win every time.

We need to get some volunteers to follow Liz Cheney around and shout "Shut the Fuck Up" whenever she opens her mouth. I'm so sick of her.

Liz Cheney is here to prove that in America, you get where you are through hard work and self-sufficiency.

Republicans are assholes. They deserve nothing but contempt and marginalization until they are prepared to act like adults.

Threatening Snowe with loss of her position is what the Democrats should be doing to their Blue Dogs who have committee leadership positions. The positions they take and keep changing to delay and try to water down the health care reforms the majority of the citizens want just so they have a better chance of getting re-elected is underwhelming. The Progressives have already compromised by giving up single payer for a public option and now they want to change that to public option lite! They should be stripped!
