As the clock runs down on the Virginia gubernatorial contest, the cavalcade of stars is in full swing. Today, RNC chair Michael Steele and Sen. Jim Webb (D-VA) will both appear in the state to stump for their party's nominee.

Webb will make a stop in Northern Virginia for Creigh Deeds this afternoon. A high turnout in the vote rich, Democratic-leaning region is vitally important for Deeds if he hopes to pull off what polls show would be an upset win over Republican Bob McDonnell.

At the same time, Steele will be kicking of a two stop tour through Virginia's southern coastal region. Steele will stump for McDonnell in Chesapeake and Virginia Beach.

Next week, the stars really fall on the state -- on Oct. 27, President Obama will make an appearance for Deeds in the Hampton Roads region, where a high turnout from African Americans and support from military voters helped push him toward his historic victory in Virginia last year.

Michael Steele stumping for any Republican is a plus for the Democrats. Can't wait to hear his first out right lie. I'm thinking it will be his second or third sentence. Seriously.

Do the Republicans even understand what a national embarrassment they've become?

While Steele campaigning should help the Dems---he can't help but hurt himself....I'm still concerned about Deeds's inability to avoid self-harm also. Inasmuch as I personally dislike Terry McCauliff and his DLC politics, I'm ashamed to say that I think he'd have run a batter campaign against McDonnell.

Deeds needs all the help he can get at this point to just *not lose*....winning will have to come later, IF he can overcome his polling deficit with actual voting returns....

My family used to know Creigh Deeds - he was our lawyer in Bath County. He's not a slick politician, he's a hardworking honest family guy who means what he says. He's not seeking higher office out of a thirst for power, or narcissism, like most politicians. (So it irks me to come here and see people wishing he was like McAuliffe, who could never get elected in Virginia.) Deeds wants to be governor because he loves Virginia and wants to work hard for it, simple as that. Democrats need to get out and vote for him because of the issues: 1) unemployment 2) high speed rail, and stop whining about what kind of campaign they would have run if they were Deeds. So do it - get out and vote for him, , and you'll be rewarded by having a great governor.

I don't know him personally, but that, actually, is my take on Deeds -- that he's a very decent, hard-working guy, and I think he would be a good governor. Unfortunately, that just hasn't really come through as strongly as it needs to for him to knock down somebody like McDonnell who is good at looking the part.

It's an unfortunate fact of political life that being good is simply not enough -- you have to be able to sell it, and Deeds is not a very good salesman.

Obama is coming next week to campaign for him. And when Deeds goes down, just like with the Chicago Olympic bid, the Repubs will be hammering home the notion that it shows Obama's mandate and support are greatly diminished. Of course it's BS because Deeds has run an awful campaign-- and that's why the White House is trying to counter that notion now according to this WaPost article, "Deed ignored advice, White House says."
