A source close to Doug Hoffman has just told me that Steve Forbes will be endorsing the Conservative Party candidate in the NY-23 special election -- yet another right-wing voice who is rebelling against the Republican Party for nominating moderate candidate Dede Scozzafava.
The biggest news, of course, is that Sarah Palin has endorsed Hoffman, denouncing the GOP for putting up their candidate. Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) is also backing Hoffman, the only sitting member of Congress to openly do so -- though of Congressional Republican have not endorsed Scozzafava.
This sure is a mess, and it's looking more and more likely that Democratic candidate Bill Owens will win from the GOP split with the Tea Party purists, giving House Democrats a pick-up of a Republican-held seat.

Conservatives don't care here. The seat would be up again in a years time for the regular 2010 cycle. This is all about establishing Hoffman's name so he wins the Republican primary in a years time. Owens seated for a year makes no difference politically, however of Scozzafava won the seat, it would be tougher to primary her out. The GOP plan is to make big gains in the House in 2010, adding one more seat to the huge Dem majority now has no impact. Hoffman gets the name recognition and wins the GOP primary in 2010 and wins the seat in the red district.

The GOP may be planning to make big gains in 2010, but if this is the way they go about it, those big gains could be big losses. A smaller and smaller minority identifies with the far-right crowd, so if they get control of the nominating process, they'll become even more of a rump party than they are today.

B/S. There will be no big gains for the thugs. Maybe even more losses.

prefer the dem win. but really this is another example where some form of a multi-party electoral system would better represent the electorate. the plurality system sucks, mostly because it leaves us stuck with our duopoly, even when one or both the parties has gone off the deep end.
