Top Senate Democrats are huddling behind closed doors this evening with key White House advisors in hopes of crafting a health care bill that hits one big magic number: 60.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) is the referee between Sen. Max Baucus' more conservative bill and Sen. Chris Dodd's more liberal one, and the White House deployed chief of staff Rahm Emanuel and presidential health care adviser Nancy-Ann DeParle.
It's a merger meeting extraordinaire.
The group has been quiet on goals for the evening, and the White House has taken a step back from official comments to let the Senate do its business. Aides know it's now in Reid's court to come up with a bill that can keep his caucus in line, though Hill staffers want President Obama to lay out his dealbreakers.
The group is under pressure to get a deal done quickly, but they also are attempting to avoid the media spotlight as dozens of reporters camp outside Reid's senate office.
A sticking point is the public option - Baucus (D-MT) says it's alive, polls show it's gaining in support and even Sen. Blanche Lincoln's (D-AR) constituents are asking her about it.
As for striking a deal, this is the still in the smoke-filled-room stage, with reporters expecting details to trickle out without a full read on the final bill. Senators who would be lobbied aren't hearing much yet. House Democrats say they don't expect to be considered in the process for awhile.
White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs was pushed during his briefing today on whether Obama was really meeting his transparency pledge since these meetings are shrouded from the public.
"The merging of two committee bills is just one step along a long process," he said. "And I think the American people have -- have gotten quite a bit of news coverage on this topic."
He added: "The process, again, is ongoing. Trust me: I'd love to declare that the process is over. It's not. It's ongoing, and I think transparency will be continued."
Meanwhile in the Oval Office, Obama sat down today with Sen. Kent Conrad (D-ND) who is a key holdout on the public option.
Gibbs said health care isn't the only item they discussed, since Conrad is chairman of the Budget Committee.
From a political standpoint, it's worth noting that despite his resistance on health care, Conrad was one of Obama's early allies. He endorsed Obama in Iowa and joined the candidate on a bus tour in December 2007. He was one of the first red-state senators to take a chance on his less seasoned senate colleague when the establishment was still firmly behind his rival Hillary Clinton.
Beyond these private talks, health care is being tossed right back into the political fire. Democrats directly challenged Republicans in a "get a mop" stunt this afternoon and Obama is keying up what's likely to be a rendition of "fired up" when he speaks to political supporters via conference call tomorrow night.

I don't have much to say except to point out that the brainwashing is apparently complete: to get a bill passed in the Senate, it's now reported that you need 60 votes.
Sigh.

I'm keen on transparent, accountable gov't but does anyone really think it would be productive to have meetings such as this covered by CSPAN?? Congress already gets too little accomplished. Having every single meeting covered would be a disaster.

Why isn't Tom Harkin at these meetings? He is chairman of the HELP committee, right? Is it just because he wasn't in that role when its bill passed and Chris Dodd effectively was? That doesn't make too much sense to me.

I've come to the point where I'm kinda hoping that Reid and Emmanual fuck over the country by failing to include a public option and thus scuttle their own bill. All in all, the mandates are so onerous that there really is nothing that can be offered in exchange for that. It's a deal killer and nothing but a boondoggle for the insurance industry. If the bill dies, we'll have plenty of opportunity to renew the fight on ground where this battle should have been fought in the first place and that is on single payer.

You are dead wrong on everything that came out of your ill informed mind. Taking whatever rotten deal you can get is a sucker play for dumbshits and pussies like the Democrats who keep trying to sink healthcare all on their own and if you wanna go for that cheap old trick like any starving peasant then that's fine. You go right ahead and do that. But fuck you for calling me a shill for the insurance interests you blazing asshole. You don't know anything about me and you obviously don't even understand my point let alone the history of healthcare reform in Congress. Neither Hillary nor Teddy Kennedy ever demanded or even feigned an all or nothing position. Hillary compromised in advance just like Obama. Cooperating with evil is what made her fail and what will kill Obama's rotten, mealy mouthed half measures.

I'm on the side of the people. What good is a Democratic majority doing common Americans when nothing is changing in any substantial way? Wall Street rules the White House and Capitol Hill now just as it did last year. No change. The war industries dictate our two pointless wars, neither of which has any end in sight despite the Democratic majority. No change. The insurance industry and associated parasites have called the tune from day one with Obama in the White House. No change. Foreclosures were at 10,000 daily last year at this time and with a Democratic majority and President no significant policy has been put in place to stem the foreclosure crisis which continues unabated at 10,000 per day. No change. Tell me, just what has a Democratic majority done for the benefit of the common people of this country thus far? We have a small core of progressive Democrats who are good but the Democratic majority is controlled by corporate centrists who are Democrats in name only.

When the government uses torture, supresses civil liberties, or spends a trillion dollars to wage war, this is called patriotism.
If the government were to make it possible for millions of people to buy PRIVATE health insurance, this is called "big goment."

Getting "something" cannot be the objective. What we all wanted and voted for was single payer (medicare) for all. We've given on that.
Then we said ok, if we can't have that, then we need a strong PO available to all on day one. We gave on that.
The we said ok, if we can't have that, then we need a strong PO in the exchanges, available to all that don't have insurance.
Now, we're going to give on that?
No. If we keep giving, what we are going to wind up with, is individual mandates, no employer mandates, taxes on prime insurance plans, no PO at all, bullshit co-ops, and still have millions without coverage.
Is that the "something" you're willing to deliver to yourself and the American People?
You cannot be so married to the idea of getting "something" that you are willing to compromise on ALL your values. You MUST be willing to entertain the idea of getting "nothing".
Look, the Democratic Party stands for a set of values. If we have Democrats in the party that are unwilling to support those values, at least to the point of allowing those values an up or down vote in the Senate, then what are we doing?
I mean, seriously. What are we doing? Are we just the party of "whatever we can get"? Even if we KNOW its a bad bill and a policy disaster?
I don't think we are. I would encourage those that are starting to slide on those values to do a little soul searching. We're going to need your support for the home stretch.

Call your Senators: no public option, no cloture. It will only take 1, max 2 Senators to kill a bill without a public option. They don't even have to come out in public. They just have to tell Reid: no public option, I'm not coming to work that day. I'm calling in sick.
And: it must be a strong public option that is Medicare lite, as Baucus says. Not subject to triggers. Not contracted out to private industry. Open to everyone who isn't covered by their employers. The only possible compromise would be an opt-out clause.
