The new GOP.com appears to be struggling through its first day online. Reporters found holes in the site's content this morning, and lately visitors have found the site to be down altogether or, at best, extremely slow.

"You know your web program is in trouble when your site can't even handle the traffic bump from people making fun of your web program," Joe Rospars of Blue State Digital told TPMDC.

Rospars helped craft the Obama Internet strategy as director of new media for the campaign.

The RNC did not respond to a request for a comment.

Late Update: Over at LiveWire, Rachel catches Michael Steele's response to the controversy. Steele to critics of GOP.com: "It's not even really a website."

Luckily for the GOP they can just add this to the list of things that never happened.

I get errors with internet explorer.

You think they would have tested it on multiple browsers.

Try here: http://our.gop.com/app/render/go.aspx?xsl=tp_community.xslt
And then clicking the button labelled "HOME" at the top, that worked for me. WARNING: miniMe version of Michael Steele will walk onto the screen and start talking to you.

While I agree the website is horrible, it is rather spurious to claim the outage is due to "mockery" and dubious to have this criticism come from the developers of the President's web presence.

Among the "holes," I wonder if any reporter found the historical error I discovered right on their Flash banner the moment I arrived.

Seems a little embarrassing to royally screw up the name of one of their "heroes," don't you think?

Nice one sinfonian. I definitely like the "what up" section by michael steele. Well, i would if the website was running. But damn, the GOP is so whack that they can drop the "'s" on "what's" if they feel like it yo. werd.

All I can see their favicon in the URL bar, LOL.

Maybe the Republicans are having a hard time finding a good web developer, after their last developer, Mike Connell, was given his 'severance package' last December.

Ah; right. And they are still using "Smart Tech":

Thankfully, the RNC appears to be rewarding its loyal followers. That's a good, good, thing.

Didn't this sort of thing happen once before for these guys?

And can anyone tell if it's a design issue, a provider issue, or a comprehensive cockup?

Of course, if not for the federal government, there would be no Internet, so maybe the fail is supposed to be some arty statement about government programs.

Right, MS, "It's not even really a website." It's a little tiny tube at the end of a lot of other tubes.
