Both Democrats seeking the nomination to run against Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) have reported strong fundraising totals -- though they'll first have to spend it in competition for the Dem nod.

State Sen. Tarryl Clark has raised $308,015, her campaign announced, after having just gotten into the race with nine weeks left in the third quarter. She has just under $270,000 cash on hand. Clark has quickly emerged as the Democratic establishment's candidate, with the support of the state AFL-CIO, SEIU, AFSCME, and various elected officials and other organizations.

Maureen Reed, a former state university regent and the 2006 Independence Party nominee for Lt. Governor, raised over $130,000 in the third quarter, and has over $300,000 cash on hand. "Maureen now sits with over $300,000 cash on hand, all of which was raised without relying on endorsements from prominent individuals or special interests," campaign manager Jason Isaacson said in a press release. "This outpouring of support shows that our message of creating jobs, fixing healthcare, and reducing the national debt is resonating with people."

The inanity is that they both have big war chests, and stand a good chance of using all their ammunition against each other.

Reed ain't a Democrat. She's a spoiler. 2006 Independence Party candidate for Lt. Gov.? The IP should be renamed the "We make sure the GOP doesn't need a majority" party. Timmeh P and Michele have both benefited from IP candidates siphoning off support from the DFL - neither has received more than 50%.

Dollars to donuts that Reed will raise her money from anti-Dem forces and use it to trash Clark in the primary, crippling her for the general against Bachmann.

But if Reed is running as a Dem, then that means there will be no IP candidate this go round, right? No way to split the vote.

No, it's far, far worse.

Remember, Reed helped give us Timmeh P. by running for Lt. Gov. last election. This time around, Reed is running for BOTH the DFL and IP nomination... from her news release

Dr. Reed will file as a DFL candidate and seek the endorsement of the DFL and the Independence Party.

This really needs some attention. Who's contributing to Reed? And will she drop out if she does not get the DFL nomination, or will she continue to run on the Independence Party (IP) slot?

My suspicion:

1) Reed is being financed by Bachmann supporters.

2) In the primary, Reed will go postal on Clark.

3) After she loses the primary to Clark, Reed will still run as a spoiler under the IP banner - and will still attack Clark. Bachmann will sit back and pretend to be above the fray.

Do not underestimate Michele Bachmann. She's a ditz on her feet, and we like to think she's totally outrageous - but she's a good strategic planner, who has no scruples. Even odds that she and her organization to be behind this.

Someone needs to check Reed's donor list and crosscheck for party affiliation and past donations. Eric, can you do a little digging here?

Minne Sconsin - you're being paranoid. Reed is DFL. She's the BEST DFL candidate in the field. If you want to send Bachmann packing, you need to check out Dr. Reed.

Tarryl Clark looks like a true progressive, according to what I've read at votesmart. She's a lawyer, worked for habitat for humanity, voted yes for medical mj, and got a thumbs up from Minnesota Association of Professional Employees. She's also much better looking than that hag Bachmann.

Hatch cost himself the election by calling a reporter a republican whore. He was ahead in the polls before that and then lost after. Hutchinson's 6% was the same before AND after the comment. Even Hatch's staff acknowledge that Hutchinson had nothing to do with his loss.

Also, Bachmann has gotten 50% - when she ran against liberal candidate Patty Wetterling. Bob Anderson likely pulled more votes from Bachmann than Tinklenberg... Anderson is farther right than Michele Bachmann... if that's possible.

Reed is running as a DFLer and she will get the DFL nomination whether that's through the caucus system or in the primary in August. Reed is simply a better candidate than Clark to run against Michele Bachmann. She's a moderate DFler with a strong background in health care, education, environmental policy and business.

She was the president of Aspen Medical Group where she practiced medicine at Freemont Community Clinic serving uninsured and underinsured patients. She was the medical director and vice-president of Health Partners for 12 years. She is now in the Washington Co. Medical Reserve Corps and was deployed to help after Katrina/Rita and after the I-35 Bridge Collapse. She was the director of the Parks and Trails Council of Minnesota where she had to purchase health insurance for the employees and balance the budget in 2008. AND she was elected to two terms on the University of Minnesota Board of Regents and served as the chair of that body.

She has SERIOUS bona fides.

Much more real world experience than Clark and Bachmann. And she's a moderate candidate that can beat a fanatical Bachmann in a conservative district.

The party needs to come together behind Maureen Reed if we want to oust Michele Bachmann!

See my comment above. Reed ran IP in the last gubernatorial election.

I'm not saying we need ideological purity, but we do need to elect Democrats.

Count me as one 6th district voter that's done voting based on "electability." I'm far, far left of much of the district but will no longer vote for people like Tink just because he's supposed to be electable. In 2010 I'm voting for the most progressive candidate available, and right now that's Tarryl. Reed has done nothing to earn my trust (and quite a bit to make me concerned). Tarryl has the guts to call Bachmann out as a lunatic and has the brains and political orientation to at least reflect some of my core values.

I'm surprised Bachmann doesn't quit her senator job so she can help America more by giving uninformed, hysterical speeches to "communist" business leaders.

Bachmann won't quit her House gig just yet -- she needs to be re-elected and serve at least one more year before she can vest in the Congressional pension plan.
