Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) is on no one's list of vulnerable Senators in 2010. But an active duty Navy M.D. says he's ready to mount a serious challenge to the six term liberal. From the left. Daniel Freilich says he plans to formally announce his bid for Leahy's seat tomorrow in Wilmington, VT. We caught up with him this afternoon.

Freilich, 45, is an internist and infectious disease specialist for the Navy and has spent much of his military career in clinical medicine. Not surprisingly, much of his campaign message focuses on health care. Freilich is a single payer advocate and says that Leahy "bears some of the responsibility" for the idea's current DOA status in Washington as a "more than 30 year incumbent."

Overall though, Freilich praised the man he hopes -- however fleetingly -- to defeat for the Democratic nomination. "Traditionally, he's in the right direction" on most policy issues, Freilich said. "But not sufficiently so."

Freilich is currently on active duty but said his status should change to "reservist" in the next several days so he can actively campaign. Asked how serious a bid he intended to mount against the popular Leahy, Freilich said he plans to raise "hundreds of thousands of dollars" to mount his bid.

"How many I don't know," he said. "But that promise should give you an idea of how serious we are."

I think this is an attempt to get his name out to run for the seat in the future. There is no chance Leahy is beat in a primary or general. He doesn't want to take on and lose the only Vt congressman because then that would set the in-state pecking order.

I hope he doesn't have any designs on Sanders seat.

I think it's not entirely impossible that Leahy could be beaten in a primary (although it would take some incredible missteps). The general is pretty much a lock, especially given the declining caliber of republicans in the state. But it may also spur Leahy to actually do more on health and other issues, rather than writing a lot of sternly worded letters.

Leahy isn't even 70, so unless he has unobvious health problems he's got at least another couple of potential terms.

I've got to disagree - there is next to zero chance that Pat Leahy could lose a Democratic primary here in Vermont. He has established incredible personal connections and popularity in every corner of the state, and especially among Democratic activists and core Democratic voters. Patrick remains the only Democratic Senator ever elected in Vermont, and he holds a place of deep affection in the hearts of countless Vermont Democrats.

While many of us would like to see him more out front on issues like single-payer, that wouldn't be anything close to enough to outweigh things like his overall positive Senate record, the value of his seniority for the state, his leadership on the Judiciary Committee, his record in getting things done for Vermont (such as the recent supplemental approval of payments to dairy farmers that Leahy, Sanders and Welch worked together to make happen), his overwhelming fundraising abilities, his on-the ground campaign machine honed in 6 successful Senate elections, his reputation for integrity and his personal connection with Vermonters.

Unless there were to be a scandal with Patrick (there won't be), he is untouchable.

I'm sure that Dr. Freilich is running for his heart-felt beliefs about policy, not for some calculation about a future statewide election. From the little I know of him, he seems to be an intelligent, thoughtful, and sincere man, the type of person we need in our politics and government. However, it is difficult to see how he would be able to put together a solid campaign and fundraising (unless he is self-funding, which I'm led to believe he isn't).

But there are limited opportunities for someone like Freilich in Vermont politics -- with two extremely popular and progressive US Senators in Leahy and Sanders, and with similarly progressive Peter Welch having a solid hold on our only Congressional seat, there simply isn't an opening on the federal level. And even if he wanted to run for the state legislature, all of the current officials representing the town of Wilmington are solidly progressive Democrats and don't appear to be going anywhere.

But even while I don't think he has any chance of defeating Leahy, it would be great and very consistent with Vermont political tradition for him to use the opportunity to affect the public debate and advance discussion through his candidacy.

I see what you're saying. I hope that he's also looking to the future.
Leahy has his flaws, as did Kennedy. But I wouldn't trade him at this point.

I wish that there were some clear candidates in MA, ready to pick up the torch once it is laid down. We've got some decent ones, but none that I feel have the same commitment to the little people. All the current crop either grew up under Reagan/Bush, or got into politics during that era - and I think they've all got something resembling Stockholm Syndrome.

Freilich may provide a deeper "bench" to the people of VT.
Amen to that.

Maybe you're both right! I assume Mr./Dr.Freilich has ultimate designs on a public office and the longest trail starts with the first step. Also, he may be taking a lesson from the apparent effect Joe Sestak's campaign has had to goose Old "Magic Bullet" Arlen into playing a Democrat on TV.

Perhaps he is attempting to wake up Old Pat Leahy, who could definitely use a wake-up call.

Hopefully less rude that the one he received from Darth Cheney, on the floor of the Senate. Hmmm! Why are "people" demanding Alan Grayson apologize again?

In the 220 years that Vermont has been a state, only TWO senators have ever lost re-election. Pat Leahy ain't gonna be the first.

He's such a great guy.

The more lefties, the merrier!
He's grooming himself for office, wish there were more lefties with similar ambition and chutzpah to support around here.

I don't know what the economy is like in Vermont but if it gets really bad I could see an anti-incumbent thing going. I like Pat Leahy a lot but I think in the recent past, he's gotten pawned by the Jud. Comm. Repubs.

I love me some Pat Leahy, but Dan Frielich is a great guy and funnier than Al Franken.

I met Daniel at the Physicians for a National Health Plan annual meeting inBoston recently. He is intelligent, sincere and knowlegable. It is interesting that when Margaret Flowers mentioned that someone was planning to run for the Senate from our ranks, he stood before I could. That is how we found out that there are two of us who will be running for the Senate. I am not currently running, as I have to quit my job with the VA first.

In addition to me, there is another Green running against Blanche Lincoln in Arkansas who needs our support. We can win if and only if progressives understand that the Democratic Party cannot afford to keep compromising its core principles. Having powerful Senators and a Democratic majority is meaningless whenthe interests of corporations consistently outweigh those of Americans.

Americans are demanding real choices, and Daniel and I intend to provide them.
