Whatever happens Tuesday in New Jersey and Virginia, that doesn't necessarily reflect on President Obama, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said today.
Gibbs reminded reporters that Democrats won in both states in 2001 when Republican President George W. Bush had just taken office. At that time, Bush was at the height of popularity following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
But on Nov. 6, 2001 Democrat Mark Warner (now a U.S. senator) was elected in Virginia and Democrat Jim McGreevey won in New Jersey.
"I don't think anybody thought President Bush was significantly hampered by that ... Whatever the results are I don't think they portend a lot in dealing with the future," Gibbs said during the briefing.
"We continue to take the long view on what's going on in Washington and in the country," Gibbs said.
"We'll have time to dissect" the results after Tuesday, he said.
TPMDC hears that Obama is planning to be out of town on Wednesday at an event in the middle of the country.

I've been seeing more grammatical errors lately and have just accepted it as part of a blog growing bigger and busier. But now we're getting duplicate postings? And lately politicians have been identified with the wrong party? What the hell is going on with quality control around here?

Obama will be at "an event in the middle of the country" on Wednesday.
Good for him! Away from those coastal elitists in New York, New Jersey and Virginia. Maybe he can get a poor-boy with extra chuckle.

Someone saw 30 Rock last night. That was hilarious. He's going to be in WI though for education I thought?

Actually... Madison, WI to be exact. Local reports say he plans to visit a middle school and talk about education.

Apparently they're also going to discuss with local officials how Dane County managed to have an infant mortality rate among African-Americans well below the national average (and falling). Other than the fact that we have good hospitals and for the most part good insurance plans, we don't really know how it happened either. :)

I think Gibbs called it right and this should not be played as the "WH downplays Nov. 3 election".

Memo to the Beltway crowd:
Not every local or statewide election is a referendum on the current administration. Sometimes local and statewide elections hinge upon such simple things as personalities and/or (gasp!) local or state issues.
Seriously. Political entrail-reading and navel-gazing in this country is out of control, especially inside the Beltway and on the TeeVee.

The big point here is that electorally, the US works on a two-year cycle, and makes odd-year elections difficult to extrapolate into grand meaningful, particularly when policies are in place that simply can't produce instant results. Virginia's particularly tricky because of its one-term-and-out thing; New Jersey also has its own little political subculture, which gives such counter-cyclical giants of statecraft as Christie Todd Whitman.
Sometimes odd-year elections are the bellwether for momentum shifts and demographic changes that carry over into the big elections the following year when all the big guns are firing on the campaign trail. Sometimes they aren't.

I think the GOP are like day traders: Their horizon is based on the chatter of the day and not longterm results. But next year, or even three years down the line, we will have a vastly different economic situation and the difficulties of the health care process will be forgotten. And legislative and policy victories, if they happen, will paint a very different picture. (health care, climate change, and so forth)

Not to mention, the WH has little if any control over who wins a primary. In the case of Deeds, the guy is a frankly awful candidate/campaigner. (Note: They are different things entirely.) Corzine will probably win narrowly, and whoever knows what will happen in NY-23 isn't telling.

Don't Just Hope! Act!
Virginia Progressives - there's 72 hours until the Commonwealth makes a choice between the 19th century and the 21st century. The only choice you actually have is between Deeds, Wagner & Shannon vs the RWN lineup of the GOP.
Here's how you can help the Deeds campaign, from an e-mail sent today:
Dear Friend:
There are less than 72 hours until the polls open and we cannot let up for one second -- not when there is so much at stake.
We've put together the largest grassroots organization Virginia's ever seen in a Governor's race. Over the next three days, we're aiming to have 5,000 volunteers knock roughly 375,000 doors across the Commonwealth and make over 700,000 GOTV calls.
Together, we can win this thing. But we need your help to get the job done.
Click here to sign up to knock doors, make calls, and get out the vote.

Last year, we made history and bucked a 44-year trend when Virginia's electoral votes finally went to a Democrat in a Presidential election. And if we get our voters to the polls, we can do it again this year.
Your help could make the difference. So please, put your plans aside, donate a few hours of your time, and come out to join our cause. We will surprise the pollsters, the pundits, and the naysayers.
If we work together, if we believe together, we will win on November 3.
Click here to sign up and volunteer to help get out the vote in the final days.
We've worked far too hard to leave anything on the table.
Thanks for everything you do. Now, let's get to work.
Creigh
P.S. Today is the last day to vote absentee in person. If for any reason you think you will be unable to get to the polls on November 3, click here to find your local registrar and vote absentee.

P.S. From VACommonsense - In Virginia, lawn signs mean nothing. In the Obama campaign if you went by lawn signs, my precinct would have been judged to be solidly Republican.
Actual results: 2 to 1 for Obama!
