Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) has often warned that America is being transformed under President Obama from a free-market system into a totalitarian socialist one -- and now she's employing an interesting piece of tautology, depicting the pre-Obama era as some kind of perfect free market.
Bachmann told the Christian Examiner site: "I think it is jaw dropping when you think that under his watch, the federal government has taken ownership or control of the private economy. People know that something has really changed. The federal government now owns or controls 30 percent of the private economy. Just over a year ago, you couldn't say that. Just over a year ago, 100 percent of the private economy was private. Today, 30 percent is owned or controlled by government."
That's right, the private economy of a year ago was 100% private. By using last year's economy as the benchmark, before the economic collapse and the bailouts -- which were spearheaded by President George W. Bush and supported by Republican presidential candidate John McCain, along with Obama's participation in the Senate -- then 100% of that year's private economy was private.
Of course, the private and public portions of an economy fluctuate over time, depending on the needs and policy decisions of the era. But at the end of the day, this year's private economy is 100% private, too. The private economy of 1928 was also 100% private. And even in 1945, in the midst of heavy defense spending and regulations from World War II and the New Deal, the private economy was 100% private!

And many of us Republicans know how absolutely undependable Michelle Bachmann is. The woman acts like she is full of fruit loops. Poor thing seems to have a problem with reasoning. How sad that she is so vocal and the far right wing of our party just eats up what she says. She does NOT speak for me in any manner.

Then you are not a Republican. You would not pass the litmus test that the party is promoting. Bachmann is the future of the Republican Party. If you don't like it you can leave!

No dear, I will be a Republican till I leave this world. I know far right nuts intend to try to chase us moderates out of the party but you see, we were here long before the far right got their hands into the pie and we have been through this insanity before. AND, low and behold, the country wises up and sane Republicans are back in vogue. Unfortunately for the party, mind control does not work. We are a freedom of thought country and mind control is antithesis to democracy.

Republican since 1978. Standing right where I stood then. Will still be standing here when/if the party leadership comes to its senses.

I was Republican in 1978. Voted Republican in my first elections. I lean Democratic today.
But who did I vote for? A governor who signed the first piece of legislation banning prohibition against gays and lesbians, saying, essentially, that as a Republican he felt that government had no business being in people's bedrooms. Imagine any Republican today doing this (except for Ahnold, and look where he's at).
I hope for a strong opposition party, which is grounded in reality. I wish you luck in reforming the GOP, or in nurturing a new party if need be.

Before Obama, Halliburton and KBR, Blackwater, Boeing, Lockheed, and all the rest of them were not being sustained by government contracts. They didn't get government contracts until Obama came along. Before Obama the oil companies weren't getting massive government subsidies. That only happened when Obama came along. Before Obama, timber interests and mining interests had to pay for their own infrastructure at market price. The government didn't build them access roads and sell off the rights at sale barn prices until Obama came along. Agriculture wasn't getting any help at all from the government. That didn't happen until Obama came along. Exporters didn't get any subsidies until Obama. As a matter of fact, Obama invented subsidies. Nobody knew what they were until he came along.
There are time that you wonder how a twit like Bachmann can function. How does she manage to dress herself in the morning in her private universe?

You don't understand. All the things you describe pre Obama are fine with Michele -- she's down with the idea of giving government money (AKA our taxes) to private corporations -- what she has a problem with is our getting anything in return for that money -- especially if it is partial ownership.

Nope. It was Cheney got the purple heart. And it was deserved because he had to wait so long for the guy who got in the way of his shotgun apologized. That delay deeply hurt Cheney's feelings.

TPM uses Michele Bachmann's own words to raise obvious contradictions. That's not fair. Had she time to think about what she's saying, I'm sure she wouldn't be saying these things. TPM is just quoting her to embarrass her. We need to learn to feel her anger against people of color, and her job is done.

George Bush invented socialistic prescription drug programs - Can you say EXPANSION of Medicare.
Ronald Reagan made our banking system more Communist then Russia's when he bailed out the savings and loans, real bankers were destroyed by his Resolution Trust soviet style bureaucracy. The propped up, communist bankers caused the current financial crisis.
The Republicans want to jump in between family members and tell people that Government enforcers know better when loved ones should be kept on life support. Like they did to Terry Shiavo's family, the party of casinos, country clubs, booze, and mistresses claim they love your Grandma more than you.
These are all examples of hyperbolic attacks on Republicans that are more defensible than the one's Republican's mount against Democrats. The problem is we DON'T make them. The reason is we don't believe them enough ourselves. The Republicans on the other hand (like the Bachman statement and the non-reaction to it show)don't care when their attacks don't even make logical sense, let alone if they are are even partially true. All they care about is driving the narrative.
This produces a sort of reverse discrimination in the media. When Republican's exaggerate, Democrats go nuts and no one else cares. This means that when Democrats exaggerate at the same level, other Democrats shouldn't care. If Democrats react negatively to the hyperbolic Republican attacks made by their own party members - this then proves they are unacceptable.
In this world is where the president can't call a beat cop stupid for entering a guy's house uninvited when he committed no crime, but a Senator who calls stands up and shouts "You Lie" at his Commander in Chief is forgiven immediately and then canonized for his behavior.
