Faced with the charge of hypocrisy for providing employees health insurance that covers abortion, the Republican National Committee has moved to strike the benefit from their policy.

"Money from our loyal donors should not be used for this purpose," said chairman Michael Steele. "I don't know why this policy existed in the past, but it will not exist under my administration. Consider this issue settled."

With one exception--Rep. John Shadegg (R-AZ) who voted 'present'--House Republicans voted unanimously for an amendment to health care legislation that forbids women who receive government insurance subsidies from buying policies that cover abortion.

Of course, given the definition of "insurance," the RNC can only really escape the sin of financing abortions by buying insurance from a company that has a blanket policy against covering abortions.

Seems like a Pyrrhic victory for the left. As much as I think that they should be called out on the carpet for hypocrisy in general, I hate to think that calling them out on this issue restricted any woman's access to abortion - even if that woman gets her insurance from the Grand Old Party of Douchebags.

I know what you're saying, and I'm torn. For one thing, "my abortion is different" is one of the key pieces of hypocrisy that allows the anti-choice movement to keep functioning. Women go in to get their abortion one day, then join the protestors out front the next. If even a few get it through their skulls that they're just ordinary sinners like the rest of us (and are considered such by the GOP), we might start making some actual progress.

In the same way, I keep hoping - as I do for the Log-Cabin Republicans - that at least a few will realize that the GOP is actively hostile to them, and stop supporting it.

(Hit submit too soon, dammit)

But at the same time, I hate the idea that any woman's reproductive rights might suffer in order to advance a long-term political agenda.

Poor Michael Steele is scrambling and backtracking yet again. Good thing he's got a crackerjack coach:

It underscores my growing conviction that the entire Republican establishment is a complete fraud. There doesn't seem to be a single consistent political or moral position anywhere.

How's that big tent thing going anyways?

Honestly, though, I would have preferred this to remain a "dirty little secret." Even women working for the republican party should have reasonable access to abortions through their health care coverage. I suppose same-sex partner coverage is beyond their small-minded morality as well. Ooops, maybe that is also a hidden benefit. Sorry for bringing it up.

I'm sure Amy Siskind still thinks it's a great idea to sit down and discuss women's issues with Steele, though.

Way OT, but:

Well I think it is a powerful tool. Under GOP logic a single dollar taints the entire insurance plan. Meaning that every single organization associated with the Catholic Church, the Religious Right, or Movement Conservatism is fair game for this kind of harassment. Let us see that if push comes to shove the Republican Party and all its allies are really as willing to deny comprehensive insurance coverage to upper middle-class white women and their teen daughters as they are to working class women and children.

Dan Qualye fell into this trap at one point. When asked what he would do if his teen daughter got pregnant his answer started "Well we would get together as a family and---". Luckily for him his wife Marilyn was there and stepped in and said "She would have the baby". Because any other answer would have betrayed the deep hypocrisy that lies at the core of this issue.

So lets watch the insurance companies squeal when organization after organization, company after company are forced to find alternative insurance plans that don't offer abortion to services to ANYONE. There are some near term risks to this but I think it is worth driving home the message to moderate to conservative women who may vote Republican on economic or more broadly social issues that the Party does not believe that they have control of their own uterus.

Because in the end 'choice' is not the right word. Unfortunately English doesn't have a nice, short word for 'autonomy', the notion that in the end you have the right to control your own self, and particularly your own body. Let the Right educate women that in this one matter that they are not free, that they are slaves to other people's and particular to other mens' will. See how well that flies in affluent suburbs.

Ah, but did they REALLY "drop abortion coverage"? If the insurance company they use offers abortion coverage to ANY customers, isn't the whole pool of money tainted? Isn't that the same argument Stupak supporters are using against pooling money?

Focus on the Family provides its employees health insurance through Principal, an insurance company that covers "abortion services."

Hypocrisy notwithstanding, this is a terrible decision for women. IIRC, for example, Catholic women have abortions at a rate slightly larger than the population in general. When push (pun not intended) comes to shove, lots of moral people decide that committing the one-time "sin" is better than living long term with the unwanted child. Even Republican staffers should have that right.

I am totally convinced that if the women who were seeking abortions were, black women and hispanic women the thug party would care less. They would probably be encouraging it. I know I read this somewhere. I must look it up again.

It was Bill Bennet who once said that crime in America would be decreased if we gave African-Americans more access to abortions

More hypocricy from the GOP. You are telling me they had abortion in thier health insurance for almost 2 decades. Clean up your own house before you tell the country what it should believe. Obviously, their bloviating arguements for ProLifers is just a red herring. You are pawns of the GOP - Prolife, TeaBaggers, conservative spending (ironic and hypocritical all in one), Catholic Church...

That may be...I'm sure its comforting to believe that the same never happens in the Democratic party. BTW, how has Pres. Obama done in regards to gay rights, anyway?

People in power love being in power. They will say what they need to say to gain it and hold it. Party affiliation has nothing to do with that.

All donations received by the RNC since 1991 must be returned. No quibbling. They deceived how many Pro-Life supporters into paying for abortions? Either they stand behind their principles or they don't.

And a huge BTW: why do almost all major health insurance plans cover abortions? What is the cost of an abortion vs. the cost of birthing a child? Another case of principles win out every time.
And who is going to pull the plug on Grandma?

My guess is nothing will change with their policy. I hope someone follows this up relentlessly to make sure they either make the change or admit that they have not intention of doing so.

In a metaphorical sense, the GOP is an abortion. Ironically, that would in theory mean that they in principal disapprove & are stauncly opposed to themselves.
