At yesterday's tea party rally on Capitol Hill, at least one protester brandished a large graphic photograph of the victims of the Dachau Nazi concentration camp, comparing health care reform to Nazi policies. Today, Rep. Eric Cantor's (R-VA) spokesman called the photograph "inappropriate."
Rep. Steve Israel (D-NY) has also condemned the poster.
Cantor, in an interview today with Bloomberg, also offered some criticism of radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh's comparison of President Obama to Adolf Hitler.
"Do I condone the mention of Hitler in any discussion about politics?" said Cantor, who is the only Jewish Republican in Congress. "No, I don't, because obviously that is something that conjures up images that frankly are not, I think, very helpful."
In a climate where Republicans who criticize Limbaugh come crawling back on their knees (see TPM's "Forgive Me Rush" photo feature), Cantor's office has pointed reporters to the story, emailing the link to Glenn Thrush's post on Cantor's remarks.
It's worth noting that Limbaugh made the comment in question -- "Adolf Hitler, like Barack Obama, also ruled by dictate" -- on Aug. 6. Cantor at the time did not respond publicly to calls from Jewish groups to condemn the remarks.

No, I don't think Mr. Cantor is about to apologize. That Rush invoked the Nazi death camps just to rabble rouse against Mr. Obama was a cheap shot. In all these years, there have only been a scant few situations that deserved
ANY comparison to the Hitler killing machines. That Rush used that comparison is beyond the pale. I doubt he has any insight as to just how disgusting his statement that seems to trivialize the suffering of the Jews astounds not only me but hundreds and hundreds of others. And thank you Mr, Cantor for standing up to Rush, who constantly tries to push our party to the far extremes. Please know that I heartily support you and it is the first time in a while that I have had an occasion to be REALLY proud of our party. As you enter this eye of the storm, please know that you have a lot of folks who are very proud of you and who trust you can nudge our party back to some sanity. Otherwise, our party is doomed. I know you are a lonely voice in the wilderness but this 77 year old grandmother is very proud of you.

Although I do not always agree with Mr. Cantor's every view, I always appreciate his honesty about the entire inappropriate "Nazi" discussion that folks introduce into any discussion of a U S politician. Cantor is definitely my sort of politician on this one. In fact that Mr. Cantor is the only Jewish person in our congress is troubling to me. Are we back to the anti-Jewish rant these days? Surely the rest of us should label it for hate if in fact it is the trend that is coming down the pike.

Dachau was a Class I camp where the political opponents of the Nazis and the captured Resistance fighters from German-occupied countries were jailed there. Sick and starving Jews were shipped in on trains during the last weeks of the war. Typhus was a real problem.
Naziism wasn't simply an anti-jewish phenomenon. There were many other victims as well. This judeocentric view irritates me because if we forget who the all of the targets were, then we also forget who the Nazis were.
Jonah Goldberg has written a book about how the socialists brought about fascism, and this isn't true. Fascism is a result of failed capitalism. Socialists were the second targets, the first were communists, and the third targets were the jews, along with the other useless eaters.

it is the first time in a while that I have had an occasion to be REALLY proud of our party.
A leading pro-Republican radio host compares Obama to Hitler, Republican activists show up on Capitol Hill with poster comparing health care reform to Dachau, and the House GOP whip finally gets around to gently criticizing them both -- 24 hours after he addressed that very same crowd of crazed activists, and you say your PROUD of your party???
Jeez, some people are easily satisfied.
Of course, if you're a Republican and you want to be proud of your party, you've GOT to be easily satisfied.

While Hitler was racist, he was also fascist - that is the comparison being made. They do not necessarily go hand in hand. The likeness is in the fascist movement, not the racial one. The Obama movement took hold with a sweeping mass populace uprising focusing support to a central authority by the indoctrination and promise of "change" or "third way" by the ruling class that invokes the worship of statism through nationalism (national entitlement programs) and syndicalism (i.e. awarding labor unions ownership in companies like GM). Fascism also needs 'war' to keep the masses engaged and excited for continued rule. There must exist an enemy to rally against. The 'war' being waged in 2009 US is a war on capitalism and the constitution - albeit not evident to most.
You are in or out in fascism, and fascism reigns as long as the masses are willing to accept this indoctrination in substitute for constitutional structure. The waves of fascism are seen in FDR, Johnson, and now Obama. While Hitler was a ruler in this same way, he also believed in 'ethnic cleansing' that no one is claiming is true of today's progressives. Everyone needs to understand these distinctions before faulting anyone for comparisons...

Think we might need to go over a few of your points:
• "The Obama movement took hold with a sweeping mass populace uprising focusing support to a central authority by the indoctrination and promise of "change." And by that you mean that Obama was democratically voted into office by a majority of Americans? Yeah, that happens every 4 years. It's called a presidential election. (Candidates often use catch-phrases like "Change" and "Morning in America" when they run. They need something for the bumper stickers.)
• "Fascism also needs 'war' to keep the masses engaged and excited for continued rule." You mean like Iraq? Started under false pretenses by Bush and Cheney? You have a point there.
• " (i.e. awarding labor unions ownership in companies like GM.)" The labor unions don't own GM. GM went bankrupt. It's now owned mostly by you and me (because the US govt. put up the purchase money) and also in part by Canada and various unsecured creditors. A very small portion is owned by the UAW, through its pension fund.
By the way, I think you're confusing "fascism" with "communism." Hitler did away with the labor unions.
• "The 'war' being waged in 2009 US is a war on capitalism and the constitution." Uh huh. That's why Wall Street is doing such bang-up business. The constitution WAS mightily damaged by the illegal acts of Bush and Cheney (unauthorized wiretapping of Americans; torture; dubious claims of presidential authority, etc.) but I think it will recover.
You sound like you're interested in history. May I suggest that you actually do some reading? ( Limbaugh and Coulter don't count.) If you're interested in what fascism REALLY looks like, read "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich" by William Shirer. He worked as a journalist in Germany during the 30s and his book is exhaustively researched. And he'd probably punch you in the face (if he were alive) to read such stupid, ignorant comparisons between Hitler and Obama.

My esteemed co-commenter KJW has calmly destroyed you, Puckerup, but I have to add that you use the term "fascism" with a kind of hysterical blandness that doesn't strike me as entirely rational. Do you believe it's fascism if the federal government compels some other entity to do something in order to alleviate a perceived problem? Because if so, then surely "No Child Left Behind" is fascism, right? And of course you were commenting against it with all your might and main, I'm equally sure. Honestly, you're a slightly better writer than most of the other wingnuts, and you don't use all caps, which is nice, but your critical thinking ability is nil. If you lived under anything like a true fascist government, the police would have come for you long ago. But hey, if these waves of fascism are really getting you down, you could go live in some country with less central authority—Somalia comes to mind—or you could simply return to your home planet.

It is you who are confused and are conflating descriptors. I don't pretend to know everything, but I do recognize problems with your theories which don't help you or anyone else.
Fascism is reactionary - perverted Capitalism, Socialism for the rich, increasing police state in-order to protect the status quo of the elite. If the people are in fear they become sheep. War isn't necessary, but state terrorism helps keep the sheep in line and seeking protection from the government. (See "strategy of tension" as applied in Italy ).
National entitlement programs are a socialist program aimed at the stabilization of the lower classes.
Syndicalism was described by Trotsky, and is worker owned production, trade unionism, not run by government.

I think it's much simpler. If there was sign referencing the holocaust at this particular event and it was not carried in by a DEM infiltrator, it was a sign carried by a pro-lifer.
They often compare gov't funded abortion to a holocaust...not THE HOLOCAUST.
It has nothing to do with antisemitism and killing Jews.

The co-opting of Holocaust tropes by these ignorant rubes sickens me, as my grandparents were Holocaust survivors. Actions speak louder than words and Cantor's meek denunciation utterly fails. This stuff has been going on for quite awhile now, with Cantor leading the charge. Perhaps this sort of ignorant zealotry that is so prevelant on the Right is "Why Jews are Liberals," to answer Norman Podhoretz' question. The constant denunciation of liberal elites, the media and Hollywood are a constant reminder of the anti-semitic Bircher undercurrent of movement conservatism.

Imho it starts with the media. Look up the contact info for all the major media outlets and complain. Then tell 10 of your friends to do the same. Ask the media whether or not they covered this issue that is deeply insulting to you (the Dachau poster) and make them answer your question. Have a second question ready to go, such as, "Will you ask Michelle Bachman and the Republican Leadership to condemn the Holocaust and Nazi imagery?" Or, "Did you interview the group Americans for Prosperity and ask them if they condemn this type of imagery?"

bcutlerj -- I wish I could sit back and watch these people destroy the Republican Party from within. I hope the hate machine implodes on its own, but I'm concerned that there are just enough hateful nuts out there waving their inappropriate, horrific photos (and carrying their guns) that someone may really get hurt. Or that health care reform will fail because the Dems lack the courage to bypass the hate machine and just get something done. The hate machine nearly derailed reform in August 2009, and they seem to have the Conservadems running scared. We cannot allow that to happen again when the U.S. appears to be so close to getting some type of reform, even if not everything we (I) want.
Finally, it's also about what is right and just. Using Holocaust photos to protest health care reform is NOT right or just. It's insane, ignorant, and mean. Time to stop the insanity.

Someone getting hurt is exactly where this is all leading up to. Every single one of them standing at that podium should be held accountable. All the zealous wingnuts in talk radio, and faux news should also be held accountable. This is insane.
The insanity of all this is THE STORY. Why is the MSM sitting on its hands and allowing it to happen? Even worse, why are they giving them legitimacy?

Perhaps you don't understand your fellow citizens very well. A line from a recent movie sums it all up quite well.
"Get off my lawn."
I know. I know. You don't understand what this means. That is very unfortunate. The Democratic party was once a welcomed force in this country. It has since become unrecognizable and, quite frankly, frightening to many.

The way the 'baggers are going, next to be purged from the new movement will be Cantor. They don't tolerate any disagreement and the nutjobs like Limbaugh, Beck, Bachmann, Palin, King and Gohmert and others have become the voice of the New Insurgents.
They're already gunning for Linsey Graham who still has moments of old-GOP moderation. Whattya bet Cantor gets targeted for primarying if he keeps this up. He'll fold like a cheap umbrella if he thinks they'll take away his power.

But it's perfectly OK for these flaming assholes from the right wing to trash other public officials, as long as they're not Jewish. Well you know what, folks ? Wait, when did we start talking about the PATRIOT Act? Because I hope you were against that as well, and that you went to a protest or a rally to march against it.
You're suspicious of the government's motivation? Can you elaborate? You realize that the government is made up of people, right? And you realize that no people ever have the same motivation? And you realize that every elected official will eventually be voted out of office or will retire? So there is no "the government." There are people who administer the government.

Of course the picture is inappropriate as are the references to Hitler and Obama. However, this is the sort of shallow criticism of form that makes it appear that the rest of the irresponsible hysterics of the right wing extremists is okay when it is not. I find that the Dachau pictures, while offensive in the extreme, serve to instantly discredit these extremist lunatics more effectively than almost anything else. Personally I find the racist depictions of the President far more offensive and indicative of danger in the form of potential violence than the absurd attempts to equate the Nazi extermination of Jews to the healthcare bill yet if any such criticisms arise people like Cantor either say nothing or shamelessly defend the images.

Well, let's see:
Bush multiplied government spending and expanded the national debt; he took us into foreign wars where we didn't belong; he helped transfer billions of taxpayer dollars to Wall Street; he expanded "entitlement" spending; he passed laws that infringe on our civil liberties.
Obama on the other hand has multiplied government spending and expanded the national debt; he took us into foreign wars where we don't belong; he helped send trillions of taxpayer dollars to Wall Street; he is expanding "entitlement" spending; he has passed laws that infringe on our civil liberties, and hasn't done a damn thing to undo the police state Bush erected.
OK, Shit Baggers, tell me truly: where's the change (asside from the party label)?
People with Republican-on-the-Brain made excuses for Bush.
The Shit Baggers, who denigrate average citizens for attempting to preserve personal liberty, generally have Democrat-on-the-Brain, and applaud Obama for doing the same damn things Bush did. Assholes.
Oh, yeah, actually there has been a change: Obama has multiplied the speed with which we are heading in the SAME direction Bush was taking us.
Incidentally, Fascism is government control where government has not seized the title of ownership. Socialism is the same thing, except key industries are nationlized. Communism is the same thing, except virtually everything is nationalized. However, in every case, the government controls everything.
Was Hitler a socialist? Yes. Is Obama a socialist? Yes. The comparisons are fair ones, at least in terms of political economy.

MY COMMENT: If that's the best he can do, it might be better not to comment at all. I just don't think "inappropriate" is going have any effect on the 'teabag' crowd. "Inappropriate" is more like wearing white after labor day (like half the population) or using your dinner fork rather than your salad fork to eat your salad. "Inappropriate" is like "hey, it's no big deal". It reminds me of "W" being briefed about a month before 9/11 on bin Laden being determined to attack the U.S. and him telling the briefer "ok, now you've covered your ass".
I think at a minimum it was 'offensive' and/or 'repugnant'. More specifically, it was terribly inconsiderate of people who lost family members, friends, etc in the Holocaust. Fortunately, I did not but I'm still having difficulty getting that horrible image out of my mind and I'm very disturbed by the way it was used (misused).
I just don't understand how someone can "use" (misuse) the Holocaust (especially a photo like that) in a debate over reforming health care. I also do not understand how a rational person can think that it makes a legitimate point in support of their position. Do they think the 'shock value' alone is somehow beneficial to their cause? I just don't get it. It seems really weird and creepy to me.

RE: "wearing white after labor day"
SHOULD HAVE BEEN: wearing white after Labor Day
I suspected as much, went to the trouble of checking on it and then neglected to make the change before I submitted the comment. Attention deficit is so annoying!
