At the Capitol Hill Tea Party just now, Rep. Todd Akin (R-MO) stepped up to lead the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance -- which he said drives the liberals crazy.
"And so as we now renew our commitment to the Red, White and Blue, let us with boldness proclaim the fact that we are one nation under God," said Akin. "It is altogether fitting that we should do this -- and it drives the liberals crazy."
The crowd laughed, and joined Akin in the Pledge, with a genuine shout given to the key words, "...one nation, UNDER GOD, with liberty..."
Other Republican members of Congress were on stage, too: Minority Leader John Boehner (OH), Minority Whip Eric Cantor (VA), Roy Blunt (MO), Jeb Hensarling (TX), Cathy McMorris Rodgers (WA), Michele Bachmann (MN) -- who was a key organizer of the event -- Virginia Foxx (NC), Ginny Brown-Waite (FL), Jean Schmidt (OH), Sue Myrick (NC), and many more.

Just curious.

Do GBLT organizers have a documented history of blatantly lying about attendance and also embarassing their entire movement through press interviews? Unlike Freedomworks, they don't. That's, I think, why it's to TPM's benefit to keep a close eye on the Tea Party proceedings.

OOOOooohhh! Man that just drives me crazy. I just hate the flag. And I hate America. And boy, I just double-sooper hate God. In fact, like all liberals, I worship Satan. I'm on the hunt for blond haired-blue eyed babies to sacrifice to the Dark Master right now in order to recover from the deadly blow these find patriots have done to my sensibilities by *gasp* (oh it pains me even to say it) reciting the Pledge of Allegience in, of all places, the Capitol of the United States.

Ahh Todd Akin. This guy is useless, and is generally seen as a seat filler. The district he represents went heavily for Bush during 2000 and '04, but were evenly divided between McCain and Obama during the last election. The only reason he won in this last election was because the Democratic party did field a decent candidate.
His district is largely suburban, and while there are some people who respond to this fringe insanity, most people roll their eyes. This type of behavior is going to seriously hurt him in the 2010 election.

Eric, did they actually omit the word "indivisible" from the pledge as your quote is rendered? Because that would just add a whole new dimension to their craziness.
And, yes, I am myself driven crazy -- at least a little bit -- by the fact that a handful of 1950's congressional douchebags (the forebears of these folks, I'm sure) took it upon themselves to edit our pledge. And in doing so chose to insert language that is not only inherently divisive (at least to my ears), but which also contextually disrupts and deemphasizes the word "indivisible" as the thrust and substantive meaning of the pledge.

Forget the strawman about it "driving the liberals crazy." The real retort to this should be, "Really? That's what gets you guys excited about saying the pledge of allegiance? Not love for one's country, or respect for its ideals or its citizens, but hatred of a group of Americans? Wow, how very... patriotic?"

Won't work. Spending trillions of dollars on defense (including billions on weapons systems that are outmoded or useless in a post-Cold War world) is what the Lord wants us to do, in order to keep our country safe, so whatever taxes have to be collected for that are holy. But spending less than a trillion on health care reform is Satan-inspired socialist tyranny.
Like most insane people, teabaggers are able to keep two contradictory thoughts in their heads at the same time, and believe both of them equally.

In my family we were taught to put our fingers in our ears whenever the Pledge of Allegiance was recited, then, when it came to the "under God" part, to make devil's horns with our fingers and stick out our tongue. We had to be careful to lip-read the pledge when other people were reciting it so we could tell when to unplug our ears.

All you need to know about right-wing hypertribalist sociopaths is that, like 13-year-olds, they aren't embarrassed by taking pleasure in annoying people.
I mean, think about it: other than a 13-year-old stuck in the back seat on a long drive sticking his finger in his sister's ear, who else does things because it "drives [someone] crazy"? What kind of person, other than a maniac or a confirmed asshole, takes pleasure in acting like an asshole?
The Republicans have made it clear over the past 30 years that they preen and coo with pride whenever they sh*t on an outside group. It's why they're so much better at random demonization than we are. "Oooh ooh, AL GORE! LOFL! ACORN!!! The UN! LOFL!!!" They're like spoiled children.
Actually, they're worse than spoiled children. Spoiled children aren't lockstep slaves to talking points and ruthless power structures.

Funny. At every Democratic convention or caucus or other large event that I've attended, the entire body recited the Pledge of Allegiance. I didn't see anyone cringe or writhe in pain or go into hysterics. It was pretty much what you'd expect from any average group of Americans at any gathering reciting the pledge.
But, unlike the tea-baggers, nobody shouted "UNDER GOD!" at the top of their lungs. I guess the Democrats just don't appreciate the value of using God as a weapon against your imaginary enemies.

Imagine there were no Pledge of Allegiance and then today's Democratic Party somehow invented it. Can you imagine what the far right would be saying about it? They'd be calling it total fascism. "How dare they make us rise en masse to perform an identical gesture and recite an incantation about pledging ourselves to our country! And what is and justice for all supposed to mean? I bet it's code words for universal health care!"

To quote Bill Maher: "The Cave just called. It wants its bat shit back."
Liberals don't mind the Pledge at all. They are only turned off when they hear it recited by people who obviously don't believe in it. People who are gathered on the Capitol steps in an effort to overturn a lawful legislative process with Mob Rule.
p.s. Teabaggers don't actually have any whites in there eyes -- only the green of envy or the red of rage.

Driving Miss Crazy
What drives me crazy is knowing that I have to share this country with ignorant, fear-mongering, narrow-minded bigots like those who think a pledge somehow separates patriots from America-haters.
Ironically, both the pledge and "under god" are the result of shallow minds; the framers of our constitution would never have included either idiocy.

I know every time I said the pledge in school it burned a hole in me, word by word, letter by letter, especially when I got to the God part.
During the lead up to 'Under God' I would have to excuse my self from the room to vomit, as duly noted by republicans, it drove me crazy... being all monotheistic and all
