Republican Chris Christie has taken an early lead in New Jersey, leading Gov. Jon Corzine 52 to 42 with 35 percent of precincts reporting. Chris Daggett, the Independent candidate, trails with six percent of the vote.

The all-important Independent vote appears to be going to Christie, with an early CNN exit poll showing 58 percent of Independents voting for the Republican candidate and only 33 percent going to Corzine. According to the poll, 28 percent of New Jersey voters are Independents.

CNN's exit polling also shows that 38 percent of voters said they were looking for change as the number one quality in a candidate. Most of those voted for Christie.

Ok, now lets look at this conceptually. Odds are the "independents" are going to break for the Republican for a number of years because, only, 20% of people identify themselves as republicans nationwide and it's probably even less in the Northeast. Many republicans have labeled themselves "independents" because of the insanity of the Republican party. Sooooo, the fact that independents break for a republican here or there, especially in the Northeast, isn't really that surprising if you think about it.

That being said, Corzine sucks as a governor, but fingers are crossed. If he loses, that really isn't a surprise either.

All will be forgotten in a week.

True, but it is easily explainable and rational for him to lose. Problem is that they will spin it that it is some type of referendum on dems and dem policies, which it definitely is not.

Christie can thank Bush. From foreclosure to unemployment, NJ voters are seemed to be voting against incumbents.

Having said, call me crazy, I think Christie will have hairline escape at the end.

Yep, I think corzine wins a squeaker. If he doesn't it won't be a shock though. Also, agree with the observation that once again the repukes can thank the ex-king for all his help. He runs the country into the ground so the dems have to clean up the disaster and then the repukes can stand on the sidelines and sling garbage at the dems while they try to clean everything up. They get a twofer, I mean threefer in that their financial base got huge tax breaks and no-bid government contracts so that they can funnel more cash and taxpayer money to the repukes for elections. Man, the ex-king was a political genius, just a f*ck up when it came to running the country.
