This morning's lesson: In politics, money can buy you love.

The Club For Growth, a key player in the GOP conservative-vs.-moderate drama unfolding across the country, endorsed Marco Rubio in the Florida senate race. Rubio has long espoused the values of the Club, but it had declined to publicly back him against Gov. Charlie Crist in the GOP primary after early fundraising numbers showed Rubio sputtering out against Crist's legendary money machine. But that was before declining poll numbers and the conservative anger at Crist's support of President Obama's stimulus package pushed Rubio into the national spotlight. Crist's fundraising has declined, while Rubio's has grown at an exponential pace. That, it seems, has pushed the Club For Growth off the fence in Florida and squarely into the Rubio camp.

From the Club press release this morning:

"Marco Rubio is the real deal, one of the brightest young stars in American politics today, and a proven champion of economic liberty," said Club President Chris Chocola. "He is a dynamic spokesman for the principles of limited government and economic freedom, and he will make a fantastic Senator."

What does the endorsement mean for Rubio? For one thing, it reinforces his role as the next champion of the conservatism that brought national attention and money to a little-known district in upstate New York a month ago. For another, it means those same national conservatives that felled Dede Scozzafava in NY-23 have set their sights on a much bigger target: the perennial swing state of Florida.

The Club For Growth has already begun running television ads for Rubio, who already had the endorsement Dick Armey, another central player in the NY-23 race.

Well, if he ever had a chance to win, it's over now. CFG=KOD.

Fortunately, the club often beats down the candidate designated as the "RINO" in the race to the point where they can't win in the general. Which seems to be the Club's primary intent anyway.

Dems better get somebody better than Meek down in Fla, unless the want to launch the next rising star without much of a challenge.

Problem is I think the potential top-contenders on the Dem side are running for Governor (Alex Sink specifically)

Wasn't he originally going for the senate nomination but decided to run for AG instead?

It shows that the CFG learned exactly wrong lesson from NY-23.

Which I happen to think is great.

Although I agree w/ Mitty, Meeks doesn't exactly seem to be as top-notch as I'd like.

With a potentially damaging(or even losing) primary coming up for Crist, I wouldn't be suprised if we saw a few more candidates on the dem side pop up, ones that may not have wanted to take on a popular Crist.

I doubt it. With a few very notable exceptions, Florida seems to breed some of the most fearful Democrats in the nation.

To Be fair, if your governor can help swing a presidential election against the party you belong to, I'd duck and cover for a while too.

I just hope the new atmosphere changes the dynamic some.

Obviously the name Scozzafava means nothing to them.

He is a dynamic spokesman for the principles of limited government and economic freedom.
In other words, "I've got mine, fuck you."

God he's sexy, and has the hugest ears in politics. mmmm, mmmm. Hoping to see more of his hot crazy ass and less of that dull closet case Crist!.... until he goes down in flames in the general anyway.
