Gov. Charlie Crist is attacking Marco Rubio's supporters as too extreme to win the Florida Senate race, pointing to their support of the birther movement as evidence that Rubio isn't a real Florida Republican.

Crist sat down with the St. Petersburg Times for what the paper calls a "wide-ranging interview" today on the heated primary fight. Crist, on the difference between his base and Rubio's:

"There are a lot of Republicans that don't have the inclination to go to executive committee meetings,'' he said. "There is wide swath of republican voters out there that don't necessarily listen to cable tv all the time."

The paper reported that Crist was "engaged and no longer a bit dismissive of the Rubio threat," and suggested that the claims from conservative groups that he's a moderate don't reflect Crist's true political leanings.

From the paper:

[Crist:] "It's hard to be more conservative than I am on issues -- though there are different ways stylistically to communicate that -- I'm pro-life, I'm pro-gun, I'm pro-family, and I''m anti tax." ... "I don't know what else you're supposed to be, except maybe angry too."

As the Times notes, the partisan language is something of a political shift for Crist:

Critics will note he voted against abortion restrictions as a legislator and used to call himself "pro-choice" [and] that he supported higher cigarette taxes.

In the interview, Crist said he was committed to running for the Senate, despite Rubio's rising poll numbers and growing national celebrity. Crist said that Rubio's vocal base doesn't reflect the true Florida GOP. As evidence, he mentioned the recent Daily Kos poll "that found Rubio leading among Florida Republicans who doubt President Obama was born in America."

Crist's direct assault on Rubio's base is a surprise. Under fire from the national right, Crist has promised for weeks to "expose" Rubio's "true record," which the Crist camp says would surprise conservatives looking to turn Rubio into the next Doug Hoffman. In the Times interview, Crist repeated that promise:

"What is said sometimes on the campaign trail isn't necessarily consistent with the record...I mean, he's voted for tax increases several times as speaker and as representative,'' Crist said of Rubio. ... "I believe in Reagan's 11th Commandment -- thou shall not speak ill of a fellow Republican -- but I also think you need to be honest and truthful and make sure that before people go to the ballot box they have a good opportunity to be well-informed."

But beyond suggesting that Rubio's supporters have been duped, Crist went so far as to say he didn't need them, attacking their birther views and even the cable news shows that are so fundamental to the current conservative push. Rather than trying to win back the portion of the GOP base Rubio has stolen from him, Crist is essentially saying "bring it on" to the national conservative groups that now have him in their sights.

Say hello to your new GOP Crist. No deviations from the wingnut, tea-bagger, angry man party line will be tolerated by these imbeciles.

Well, yes, but there's also immigrant- and gay-bashing. Saying you're "pro-family" doesn't cut it, Charlie - tell us how you really feel about the fag agenda that's threatening America. And, of course, all those non-Cuban hispanics threatening our way of life.

What a sad, shallow man.

You forgot about the less-than-lily-white Nazi communist socialist terrorist in the White House. You have to be against him, too.

Heh. Clearly he's soft on Obamafascism:

Crist said that Rubio's vocal base doesn't reflect the true Florida GOP. As evidence, he mentioned the recent Daily Kos poll "that found Rubio leading among Florida Republicans who doubt President Obama was born in America."

Citing a Daily Kos poll is no way to reach out to the base, Charlie!

Charlie attempts to go hard right. When that doesn't work, he'll look around and see what options he has to avoid losing in a primary. The only one will be going Dem. Spector 2.0.

I'm not sure I want Crist as the Dem nominee, though you know the DNC, Rahm and DSCC will be busting out kneepads to get Charlie to switch. One wishes we had a really strong candidate at this point that would close off that option and force Charlie to fight a bloodbath with Rubio right to the end.

What's wrong with Crist switching to the Democratic party? At least by doing so he'll become more true to himself and *maybe* find peace in his decision. If he stays a GOPer, he's destined to live out a miserable, self loathing, tortured existence.

I'd much rather have him legislate via his true colors.

He'd be true to himself as a Dem?

Pro capital punishment
Pro gun rights
Pro ban on gay marriage
Prop ban on adoption by gay prospective parents
Hard anti-choice
Pro "Drill Baby Drill" flip flop in 2008

Yeah, that sounds like a Dem who can pall around with Ben-Ben and Mary after Blanche gets tossed out in 2010. We need another ConservaDem to make Rahm happy.

"I'm pro-life, I'm pro-gun..."

Crist is clearly using widely accepted short-hand for wider positions, but on a purely linguistic level, I find it odd that those two statements can be uttered side-by-side with no cognitive dissonance whatsoever in the speaker and no surprise in most audiences. Maybe what we need is a little meta-conversation. When a statement like "I'm pro-life, I'm pro-gun, I'm pro-family, and I'm anti tax" is not only unchallenged but seen as "credentializing," something is woefully wrong with the quality of discourse.

Let's not forget:
Small government, lower taxes AND bigger military.
Or: Personal freedom AND abortion restrictions on others. (Remember Palin's boasting of her daughter's "choice" to have a child?)
Or: Support for the Constitution EXCEPT freedom of speech, religion, unreasonable search and seizure, habeas corpus.
Or: Fiscal responsibility AND increases in the deficit under all the Republican presidents since Nixon.
Or: Economic growth AND every Republican president presided over worse economic condition than Democratic presidents since Hoover.

It's crazy the way these people talk. Against taxes? Who isn't? But it's like being against gravity. And pro-family? Who isn't? Obvious things that they pretend have meaning.

Crist is indeed an odd bird. Last month at a national judicial conference in Tampa which was professionally focused on issues of children and family law matters, Crist was the keynote speaker at an evening affair. He arrived with his very attractive and much much younger wife, who sat on the speaker's platform with him, which was unusual enough. But then his speech was about how lucky he was to have such a loving wife, how much she inspired him, etc. etc. There was nary a word about the conference's topic to the assembled judges, lawyers, and court officials from across the country. People not knowing about Florida (or GOP) politics, came away puzzled and bemused.

Poor Crist. He's still playing the pre-2008 political game, and he's going to lost because of it.

After Rubio came on the scene, Crist had three ways to go:

- Double-down in the GOP
- Go Independent
- Switch to Democrat

While neither of the latter two are any guarantee of success, and are quite risky, the first is political suicide for him in today's climate. And unfortunately for him, it's apparently the path he's chosen. No one in today's GOP is going to buy him as a true "conservative" at this point, and if he reaches far enough to the right to grab enough of the teabagging set to keep him from being primaried out by Rubio, he's going to have established enough extremism to make winning the general election a difficult proposition.

"Moderate" Republicans need to recognize that their time in the GOP is over for now, and reaching for the extreme in their party is just going to continue dooming it to second-tier status for the foreseeable future.
