Sen. Chris Dodd (D-CT) is struggling in his bid for reelection, according to a new poll out today from Quinnipiac University. Both big name potential GOP nominees now lead Dodd, with former Rep. Rob Simmons beating Dodd by double digits, 49-38. Former WWE CEO Linda McMahon, another potential GOP opponent, also beats Dodd by a slimmer margin.

But as the pollster said it in its release today, those names are just two of the problems Dodd faces:

"Even potential Republican contenders with almost no name recognition and almost no Republican primary voter support give Dodd a run for his money."

Dodd, the longest serving senator in Connecticut history, first took office in 1980. Since then he's become one of the most powerful names on Capitol Hill as chairman of the Banking Committee. But scandal and a bid for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2008 -- which included Dodd moving his family to Iowa -- cost him with voters back home.

Today's Q poll shows that Dodd's job approval is in free fall. In the pollsters last poll back in September, 49% of respondents disapproved of the job Dodd is doing in the Senate, while 43% approved. In today's poll, Dodd's disapproval/approval number stands at 54-40. Just 39% of respondents to today's poll said Dodd deserved to be reelected, and 53% said it was time for someone else to take the seat.

The Connecticut Democratic party says it's not worried however. "We'll see lots of polls over the course of this campaign, some accurate, and some not," state party spokesperson Colleen Flanagan told TPMDC today. "In truth, we have a hard time believing Chris Dodd has done anything but strengthen his political position based on his well-publicized and heroic work on healthcare reform, tightening our country's financial regulations and protecting consumers; coverage that contrasts starkly with the Jerry Springer-like atmosphere of the Republican Senate Primary."

"We're not taking this poll particularly seriously," she said. "Chris Dodd will continue to do his job every single day on behalf of the people he was elected to represent."

Ugh, sounds like our next Corzine. The only chance Republicans have for winning elections isn't going to be winning over the public on any issues, it is going to be from the voters really disliking the Democratic incumbent.

Sounds like he needs a good primary challenger.

Dodd should take one for the team or be forced out. This is really looking like Corzine 2.0. The White House should make it clear to Dodd that he should withdraw from this race. We can win this race with a better candidate, but certainly not Chris Dodd. 18 years is enough.

Dodd's last hope is his financial reforms bill. It's likely too little, too late. He needs to get out of the way before he costs the Dems a senate seat.

Who is the Dem that won't lose the seat?
Lamont? I thought I had heard he's running for Governor.

Dodd is pushing hard for it. With the likely massive bailout of FHA coming, there will be the opportunity to get even more populist on his part.

The problem is the the GOP isn't going to help him (40 lockstep in the other direction), and it's likely that some people like Bayh was going to be more than happy to see the Dems drop from 60 to a lower level.

It's really people like Bayh who need to primary challenger more than Dodd. Given his warchest, though, it's not likely someone will have the balls to run to Bayh's left.

It's time to play hardball.

Dodd will make our alright between his Senate retiremement and whatever millions he can make per year in cushy positions.

Get him out of there and let's keep the seat.

Holy crap, he's even behind the wrestling lady. Is it too late for a primary challenge?

Guys, go take a look at the post on the polling on Lieberman just above this one. Lieberman is polling better than Dodd because the Ct. independents still like him.

Dodd is a skilled senator and a consistent liberal voice and that's part of the problem. The simple fact is, Connecticut is just not all that liberal a state. You can't wish the electorate you want into being by saying the magic word "primary." I mean, damn, isn't that the lesson of the Lamont fail?

If we can't hold the seat with Dodd, we can't hold it with anyone else. A bloody primary would doom him and cutting the legs out from under him would only make us look weak and fearful.

The GOP and NRSC did it with Sen. Jim Bunning(R-KY) who is retiring at the end of next year. The DSCC and the White House should do the same for Dodd. Independents would prefer a fresher face than Dodd. We have strong Dems in Connecticut who can win, but we're surely not going to keep this seat if Dodd doesn't retire. It's a no-brainer. Dodd should retire.

I find the internal of Q48-49 and Q64-66 quite interesting. Issue-wise (at this point, health care specifically), the plurality of those indies are supportive of the Democratic position, but at the same time many of them are saying Liebersuck's opposition does not affect their vote. Meanwhile, 63% of them think Liebersuck is honest and trustworthy(&*$#@!!!), nearly a double score of those who think not, and 69%(!) of them say the Dems shouldn't strip him of his charmanship of the HS committee even if he filibusters (vs 23% who say they should).

So what do they care? I don't know. Obviously, they like Liebersuck, but it may not quite be something ideological or policy preference alone.

What do you think?

I wouldn't worry too much about Lieberman. He is basically done.

Take a look at his trends-they all are way down. Although independents seem meh on Lieberman they are evenly split on whether or not he deserves reelection. In addition a third of them would be less likely to vote for him if he filibusters the public option.

Joe's numbers are soft at best and could easily be driven further down with a good dem challeneger.

Yes, but assuming each poll is technically comparable (and I believe it is), we can't tell who is pulling his numbers down. I suspect the major driving force is democratic voters, but unfortunately, the poll does not provide a breakdown of that data there.

Of course dems are pulling his numbers down. CT is a solid blue state.

I don't care how much support he has from the GOP and Indies, Joe cannot win without a good chunk of dems. He won last time because of dem support. I seriously doubt it will be the same the next go round with a REAL democrat challenger and his antics on health care reform.

So, just to be clear, can I take that as your disagreement with NCSteve's assessment above ("The simple fact is, Connecticut is just not all that liberal a state.")?

Well, "a REAL democrat" in "a solid blue state" does imply that is someone in the liberal wing of the party. The question I'm wondering about is, whether such a person really has a significantly better chance than Liebersuck in Conneticut. From posts I've been reading here, many people seem to think he has nearly zero chance in 2012. But his numbers, at least per this poll, are not so disasterously bad.

I'm surprised, honestly, to see this poll. Perhaps that may be because I simply don't know much enough about the state and it's just one poll about some thing two years away. Still, his chance may not be so bad there as we want it to be. It sucks if that's the case.

all dems are in trouble.
and the reason is simple.

the people are totally pissed off that they have done nothing for them while having total control of the congress.

only right-wing nuts are safe because their supporters hate and blame everyone but them.

i made this point when corzine was going down to defeat and it will get much worse for democrats.

they blew their chance.
now you see dems trying to kill womens rights!

no dem incumbant is safe unless he is perceived to be a republican who pretends to be dem.

This is a bad climate for incumbents, due to the economy, but also, historically, the party in power loses seats at midterms.

But I think you are correct. Dems are shrinking their tent, and being cavalier about some of their strongest activists and supporters. Many of these are the people who actually get out and do the work.

I think some are disillusioned by this administration and congress as well. Low voter turnout, usually doesn't bode well for dems.

It's gonna be a long row to hoe for the democratic party.
